Conducted a reclamation leaching experiment in a drip-irrigated pistachio orchard south of Huron, California, during the winter of 2002-2003. The study was conducted to quantify the leaching water required to remove salts from the effective root zone of trees. This experiment tested a new reclamation leaching technique: multiple lines of low-flow drip tape were used to apply water to the area of salinity accumulation along a tree row. This new technique allows water to be applied where there is salt accumulation along the tree row, as opposed to putting water on the entire area of the field. Since reclamation leaching …

The use of recycled concrete material (RCM) as pavement base material is a promising but unproven technique for road rehabilitation and construction. A telephone survey conducted to investigate the state of the practice concerning RCM usage in Utah County revealed that RCM is infrequently used in this application due primarily to a lack of practical knowledge about the engineering properties of the material. Therefore, this research was aimed at evaluating the physical properties, strength parameters, and durability characteristics of both demolition and haul-back sources of RCM available in Utah County for use as pavement base material. Bio-optical variability of surface waters in Northeastern Gulf of Mexico (NEGOM) was examined using satellite and in situ data. Relatively high chlorophyll-a concentration (chl>=1 mg m-3) and high colored dissolved organic mater (ag443>=0.1 m-1) were generally observed inshore, near major river mouths, and in plumes of Mississippi River water that extended offshore during the three consecutive summer seasons (1998, 1999, and 2000). River discharge dominated chlorophyll-a concentration variability inshore, particularly near major river mouths. Strong interannual variability in chlorophyll-a concentration was observed inshore from Escambia to Tampa Bay region during …

In Fall 2004, the Aquatic Ecology Practicum class at Utah State University finished a third year of research on limnological and ecological characteristics of Farmington Bay and Gilbert Bays of the Great Salt Lake. Our previous research has produced interesting findings in Farmington Bay, including hypereutrophy (Marcarelli et a!. 2001), high phosphorus loading into the Bay, overnight water column anoxia linked to high winds (Wurtsbaugh et a!. 2002), potential predator control of brine shrimp, and high levels of hydrogen sulfide in the sediment and deep brine layer (Marcarelli et a!. 2003). The relation between temperature, salinity, and pressure in the Atlantic Ocean is examined. Most of the Atlantic resolves itself into three two-dimensional manifolds of three-dimensional thermodynamic space: a northern, more saline, branch, and a southern, fresher, branch, each quite independent of pressure, and between them a bridge, on which density is uniform at constant pressure. The properties of the branches are crucial to the construction of joint potential density surfaces, patched together at 1000 db intervals. Dynamic height (DH) computations are necessary for the estimation of geostrophic currents, heat transport studies, identification of eddies and to validate the altimeter sea surface height (SSH) observations. To compute DHs we need the temperature and salinity profiles to a reasonable deeper level. But, temperature profiles alone, such as from XBT (expendable bathy thermograph), are more numerous than combined temperature and salinity measurements from CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth). To use these voluminous temperature measurements from XBT observations in the computation of DHs, temperature/salinity relations were developed in many oceanic regions. Seeds of 4 cultivars of chickpea (2 desi, CSG 8962 and DCP 92-3, and 2 kabuli, CSG 9651 and BG 267) were grown under 0, 4, 6 and 8 dS m^{-1} levels of salinity until maturity. Shoot and root dry weights, root shoot ratio and various yield parameters were evaluated under salinity at 40, 70 and 100 days after sowing. Salinity significantly reduced dry matter accumulation in both roots and shoots in all cultivars, though declension was more pronounced in BG 267 (kabuli) and DCP 92-3 (desi). Two olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars, Leccino and Barnea, were exposed to increasing concentrations of NaCl (control, 2560, 5120 and 7680 mg l^{-1} of NaCl, which is equal to 4.0 dS m^{-1}, 8.0 dS m^{-1} and 12.0 dS m^{-1} salinity) in a sand culture. Plants were harvested and separated into different organs. Thin root, thick root, shoot and leaves were analysed for Na^+, Cl^-, K^+, Ca^{+2} and Mg^{+2} contents. Dry weights of the plants were determined. Shoot elongation was also measured. Increasing NaCl inhibited growth of the plants. However, this effect was only statistically significant in Barnea. The Maine Horseshoe Crab Surveys were begun in 2001 to establish quantitative baseline data and determine whether horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) populations are stable or declining. Spawning counts were conducted at sites from Casco Bay (southern Maine) to Frenchman’s Bay (downeast), to establish an index of relative abundance. Few (relatively) abundant populations remain in Maine at Middle Bay (Harpswell/Brunswick), Thomas Point (Brunswick), and in the Damariscotta River. Healthy but less abundant populations persist in the Bagaduce River (Brooksville/ Sedgwick) and in Taunton Bay (Hancock/Franklin/Sullivan).

The response of mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss cv. Varuna) to presowing seed treatment with sodium chloride (NaCl) was investigated. The plants raised from treated seeds were sprayed with water or 10^{-6} M GA_3 at the 30- day stage. The seeds imbibed in 1 or 10 mM of NaCl resulted in a decrease in dry mass, leaf chlorophyll content, carbonic anhydrase activity (E.C. 4.2.1.1), nitrate reductase activity (E.C. 1.6.6.1) and net photosynthetic rate at the 60-day stage, and pod number and seed yield at harvest. Salinity Response Of Transgenic Potato Genotypes Expressing The Oxalate Oxidase Gene, Hakan Turhan

In vitro and in vivo responses of transgenic and non-transgenic potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) genotypes to salinity were investigated. A gene responsible for the production of oxalate oxidase enzyme, whose expression has been associated with plant stress tolerance, was used. Transgenic potato plants expressing the oxalate oxidase enzyme were produced using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The transgenic nature of the plants was verified by their antibiotic (kanamycin) resistance and then in vitro enzyme assays. Four independent transgenic genotypes obtained from 2 cultivars, Maris Bard and Desiree, were tested at 5 levels of NaCl (0%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.00% w/v) in vitro. …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Ten monthly collections, distributed among three seasons, were taken from July 2000 to June 2001 in the Alvarado lagoonal system, Veracruz, Mexico. Variables measured in situ included dissolved oxygen, salinity, and water temperature. Water samples were collected to determine concentrations of ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, orthophosphates, total phosphorus and chlorophyll α. Collections representing the rainy season were taken in September and October, those for the nortes season were taken in November, December, and January, and dry season collections were taken during February, March, May June, and July. This report discusses a range of options for the Greenough region, which is comprised of eight shires including the Shires of Northampton, Chapman Valley, Mullewa, Greenough, Morawa, Irwin, Mingenew and Three Springs, and also the city of Geraldton. A channel that is 1.0 m to 3.0 m in depth is considered to be a deep drain. The drain is excavated to a depth that is sufficient to intercept the watertable in order to capture and convey that groundwater from flat, poorly drained land.

The drain can either be ‘open’ to allow the inflow of surface water or ‘leeved’ to exclude surface water. An open deep drain has its spoil banks placed on one side or on alternate sides of the channel (Figure 1) while a leveed deep drain has continuous spoil banks placed on both sides of the …

A study of the groundwater beneath the Boddington townsite was carried out in April 2002. The aim was to assess the salinity risk to the townsite infrastructure and to accelerate the implementation of effective salinity management for the town. The study consisted of field reconnaissance, a drilling program, expansion of a groundwater-monitoring network installed in March 2001, and groundwater monitoring.
