Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

As an academic health sciences library in an urban area, the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library is challenged to provide outreach services to a diverse user population and to the surrounding community. To respond to this challenge the librarians provide outreach services and programs to accomplish the following goals: Provide additional education to user groups within the medical center; Provide focused services at the point of need within the curricula and the hospital; Reach out to the surrounding health care community, offering medical information and consumer education; Promote consumer resources to underserved populations.

In July of 2003, Presumpscot River Watch received a $5,000 grant from the Casco Bay Estuary Project (CBEP) to assist the 21 golf courses located within the Casco Bay watershed with environmental stewardship efforts. This grant was later amended to the amount of $5,999. The project was implemented in three tasks: 1) Coordination for and promotion for a two-day conference for natural resource professionals and golf course superintendents; and 2) One-on-one meetings and technical assistance visits with Casco Bay golf courses to assess needs and promote the Audubon program; and 3) Initial environmental planning with Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program registered …

Promotoras Of The U.S.-Mexico Border: An Ethnographic Study Of Culture Brokerage, Agency, And Community Development, Ricardo B. Contreras

This study examines promotoras from the U.S.-Mexico border. Promotoras are women who live in colonias throughout the border area and who are employed by service provider and community development organizations to do health-related outreach and education with colonia residents. The role of promotoras can be seen from the perspective of culture brokerage; that is, they are mediators between local communities and external actors such as service providers and agencies of the government. As culture brokers, promotoras facilitate the relationship among the local communities, and the system of services and outside resources.
