Market Efficiency And Integration: An Examination Of Indian Stock Market, Chandra Shekhar Bhatnagar Dec 2003

Market Efficiency And Integration: An Examination Of Indian Stock Market, Chandra Shekhar Bhatnagar

International Journal of Banking and Finance

This paper examines the efficiency and integration of the Indian stock market. The weak form of efficiency has been tested by studying the stationarity characteristics of the MSCI Stock Price Index of India. For testing the semi-strong form of efficiency and integration of the Indian Stock Market with the macro phenomenon of emerging stock markets of the world, the causality between the MSCI Stock Price Index of India and the MSCI EMF Index has been studied. The results point out that the Indian Stock Market is efficient in its weak sense. However, the same is not true for the semi-strong …

The Indulgence Of Reasonable Presumptions: Federal Court Contractual Civil Jury Trial Waivers, Joel Andersen Oct 2003

The Indulgence Of Reasonable Presumptions: Federal Court Contractual Civil Jury Trial Waivers, Joel Andersen

Michigan Law Review

Large institutions such as banks, franchisers, international companies, and lessors distrust juries' ability to properly resolve disputes and award reasonable damages. As a result, these and other actors have attempted to limit juries' potential influence on the contracts to which they are parties. They have done so through contractual jury trial waiver clauses in these agreements. The Seventh Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the jury trial right. Whether the right is determined to exist in an individual instance is a matter of federal common law, which merely preserves the jury trial right as it existed when the Amendment was adopted …

Adverse Selection And Moral Hazard In Forum Shopping: Conflicts Of Law As Spontaneous Order, Nita Ghei, Francesco Parisi Aug 2003

Adverse Selection And Moral Hazard In Forum Shopping: Conflicts Of Law As Spontaneous Order, Nita Ghei, Francesco Parisi

ExpressO

In a world with multiple, overlapping jurisdictions, any given litigation could be pursued in more than one forum. Different laws can yield different outcomes. This leads to parties selecting a forum percieved as favorable to file suit. This practice, also known as forum shopping, has been much criticized, and various reforms to the law of conflicts of law have been proposed as a way to reduce this practice. The article examines the inefficiencies associated with forum selection, and the alleged shortcomings in conflicts law as it currently exists. We argue that forum selection cannot be eliminated in a world with …

Antecedents Of Salesperson Effectiveness And Efficiency Performance: A Data Envelopment Analysis, Xueming Luo Apr 2003

Antecedents Of Salesperson Effectiveness And Efficiency Performance: A Data Envelopment Analysis, Xueming Luo

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation was to (1) measure salesperson efficiency; (2) investigate both personal and organizational factors that determine salesperson efficiency; and (3) investigate both personal and organizational factors that determine salesperson effectiveness. Salesperson efficiency was assessed by data envelopment analysis (DEA). Two different DEA models were employed in order to increase the reliability of the efficiency results. Antecedents of salesperson efficiency and effectiveness were tested using Tobit regression analysis and ordinary least square regression analysis, respectively. These antecedents include not only personal level variables such as working smart, working hard, learning goal orientation, and performance goal orientation, but …

Incorporating Risk In Efficiency Analysis, Glenn A. Helmers Feb 2003

Incorporating Risk In Efficiency Analysis, Glenn A. Helmers

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

Using a non-parametric linear programming approach, our contribution is (1) to examine the impact of incorporating risk in efficiency analysis and (2) to compare the efficiency measures with and without risk for continuous and rotation cropping systems. The model uses Nebraska cropping system data for the period, 1986-2000. Results indicate lower efficiency gains are realized with the incorporation of risk. The t-test at the 5% level of significance examining if efficiency measures are significantly different from one is also reported.

Enhancing the petformance level and efficiency of existing WWTPs has been an important area of research and investigation over the past decade. Several attempts have been directed towards developing computer tools for modeling and control of these plants. GPS-X program was used in this research to study the petformance of the activated sludge module of Gabal EL Asfar WWTP in Cairo, Egypt, one of the landmark projects not only in the Middle East but worldwide. This plant is designed to treat a sewage flow rate of 1.0 million m3/d for the first stage. Samples were taken from different locations at …

Evaluating Relative Productivity And Efficiency Of Hospitality Properties Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Elena Igorevna Champaner Jan 2003

Evaluating Relative Productivity And Efficiency Of Hospitality Properties Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Elena Igorevna Champaner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The concept of productivity and efficiency is essential to any hospitality company as such companies usually face severe competition and operate in an ever-changing business environment. Purely financial measures of evaluating hospitality efficiency and productivity are not sufficient in the long-term. This study makes an attempt to evaluate the productivity and efficiency of hospitality operations using a nonparametric technique called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA is a special linear programming model for deriving the comparative efficiency of multiple-input multiple-output decision-making units. In many industries, the use of DEA helped properties identify millions of dollars of annual expense savings not identifiable …

Does Opening A Stock Exchange Increase Economic Growth?, Scott L. Baier, Gerald P. Dwyer, Jr., Robert Tamura Jan 2003

Does Opening A Stock Exchange Increase Economic Growth?, Scott L. Baier, Gerald P. Dwyer, Jr., Robert Tamura

CRIF Seminar series

We examine the connection between the creation of stock exchanges and economic growth with a new set of data on economic growth that spans a longer time period than generally available. We find that economic growth increases relative to the rest of the world after a stock exchange opens. Our evidence indicates that increased growth of productivity is the primary way that a stock exchange increases the growth rate of output, rather than an increase in the growth rate of physical capital. We also find that financial deepening is rapid before the creation of a stock exchange and slower subsequently.

Improving The Efficiency Of Sporting Venues Through Capacity Management - The Case Of The Sydney (Australia) Cricket Ground Trust, Paul Preda, Ted Watts Jan 2003

Improving The Efficiency Of Sporting Venues Through Capacity Management - The Case Of The Sydney (Australia) Cricket Ground Trust, Paul Preda, Ted Watts

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Capacity management seeks to improve organizational effectiveness through improved operational efficiency and reduced congestion. The article contends that there are major similarities between manufacturing organizations and sporting venues with respect to issues of capacity management. This article reports the findings of two capacity management studies undertaken at a major sporting venue in Sydney, Australia, and relates the findings to capacity management theory articulated in current capacity literature and exhibited in existing management practice. It is proposed that by understanding the well-developed techniques presented in the production capacity literature, venue managers may be able to identify pockets of idle capacity and …

Assessing Environmental Externalities Of The Us Coal Base Load Electric Utility Industry Using Data Enveloping Analysis, Faisal Z. Ahmed Jan 2003

Assessing Environmental Externalities Of The Us Coal Base Load Electric Utility Industry Using Data Enveloping Analysis, Faisal Z. Ahmed

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This paper attempts to address two issues. First, is how to objectively measure carbon dioxide emissions from the generation of electricity that uses predominantly coal. Second, is how to incorporate these ‘environmental’ variables into an efficiency model. Using a technique called Data Enveloping Analysis (DEA) a non-parametric piecewise surface (or frontier) over the data is constructed, so as to be able to calculate technical efficiencies (which I call environmental efficiency) relative to this surface. These ‘environmental efficiency’ measures are analyzed. The technique utilized in this study may be extended to calculate each agent’s allocative and scale efficiencies in order to …

Effective Packaging-Related Specification Management Software For A Packaging Documentation System, Gregory Cullen Jan 2003

Effective Packaging-Related Specification Management Software For A Packaging Documentation System, Gregory Cullen

Theses

An extreme amount of time and money is lost when a company utilizes an inadequate packaging documentation system. Problems such as confusion, decreased productivity, inaccurate information, and inefficient time to market arise. Having the right tool (in this case specific software) for the job will successfully provide needed information to flow throughout a packaging documentation system. In investigating the importance of this tool, Duracell will be the company focused on as part of this case study. Duracell's current packaging documentation system consists of a series of internal electronic transfers and physical distribution of packaging specifications. Relevant information is distributed among …

Behavioral Economics And The Sec, Stephen J. Choi, Adam C. Pritchard Jan 2003

Behavioral Economics And The Sec, Stephen J. Choi, Adam C. Pritchard

Articles

Not all investors are rational. Quite apart from the obvious examples of credulity in the face of the latest Ponzi scheme, there is no shortage of evidence that many investors' decisions are influenced by systematic biases that impair their abilities to maximize their investment returns. For example, investors will often hold onto poorly performing stocks longer than warranted, hoping to recoup their losses. Other investors will engage in speculative trading, dissipating their returns by paying larger commissions than more passive investors. And we are not just talking about widows and orphans here. There is evidence that supposedly sophisticated institutional investors-mutual …

Using Low-Threshold Applications And Software Templates To Improve Efficiency In An Introductory Statistics Course, Jason K. Mcdonald

Faculty Publications

This study was an exploratory study in improving efficiency in university courses by using low-cost methods of design and development that can be easily managed by university faculty. To explore this issue, we developed a lesson for the Statistics department at Brigham Young University using low-threshold applications (uses of technology that are low-cost and easy to learn) and software templates. We evaluated the lesson as a possible method to decrease the number of hours instructors were required to spend teaching in class. We discovered that students responded positively to the lesson, and that the methods of lesson design and development …
