Bullying And Victimization In Middle School: The Role Of Individual Characteristics, Family Functioning, And School Contexts, Christine Marie Wienke Totura

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the relationship between individual, family, and school variables and both bullying and victimization. Approximately equal numbers of males and females (N = 1185 and 1174, respectively) were randomly selected from classrooms in 11 middle schools across 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Students completed questionnaires including items from each domain. Questionnaires assessed bullying and victimization, internalizing and externalizing behaviors, family factors, and school variables. In addition, teachers of the selected classrooms completed a brief rating scale on each of the students, which assessed student moodiness, behavioral difficulties, and learning problems. Achievement and discipline records data were obtained. …

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In working with Renee Galliher, I had the opportunity to administer a questionnaire to 118 college students. This questionnaire included the Personal and Relationships Profile (Strauss & Mouradian, 1999), as well as questions assessing religious attitudes and activities. From these questionnaires, a data set was compiled and I presented this research at the recent conference of the Society for Research on Child Development.

Adolescents Accounts Of Growth Experiences In Youth Activities, Jodi B. Dworkin, Reed Larson, David Hansen

Service Learning, General

Little theory and research exists on the developmental processes that occur during adolescents' participation in extracurricular and community based-activities. As a step in that direction, we conducted 10 focus groups aimed at getting high school students' descriptions of their "growth experiences" in these activities. The youth reported both personal and interpersonal processes of development. The personal experiences included experimentation and identity work, development of initiative skills such as learning to set goals and manage time, and learning strategies for emotional regulation. The interpersonal experiences included acquiring new peer relationships and knowledge, developing group social skills such as taking responsibility and …

Being Bullied In Adolescence: A Phenomenologic Study, Linda Louise Lesperance

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Bullying is a common phenomenon that involves repeated intentional infliction of harm (physical, verbal, or social) to someone less powerful. Although bullying has been accepted as a normal childhood experience, it can result in a number of negative outcomes, including psychosomatic complaints, depression, suicide, and even homicide. A review of the literature found many research studies related to bullying, but only one phenomenologic study. Understanding what the experience of being bullied is like for those who endure it is an essential element in understanding and addressing the phenomenon of bullying; The purpose of this phenomenological investigation was to understand and …

Faculty Scholarship
