Growing Asparagus, David F. Graper, Rhoda Burrows
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Asparagus is an ancient vegetable, having been cultivated for over 2000 years. An ancient Roman author, Cato the Elder, in 200 B.C. wrote detailed directions for growing asparagus that are close to current recommendations. There are a number of species, but only one, Asparagus officinalis L., is cultivated for food. Asparagus is a favorite spring vegetable, both for its earliness and its distinctive taste. Not only is it low in calories, asparagus is an excellent source of vitamin A and contains significant amounts of calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, and vitamin C. Although commercial asparagus production in the United States is concentrated …
Managing Feedlot Cattle To Reduce Nutrient Waste, Julie Walker, Brad Johnson
Managing Feedlot Cattle To Reduce Nutrient Waste, Julie Walker, Brad Johnson
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Management opportunities can reduce feed costs and the cost of excess nutrient waste outputs. The key to controlling excess nutrient output is controlling nutrient intakes. The question becomes whether nutrient excretion can be reduced without negatively impacting animal performance?

The Decision To Breastfeed In The United States: Does Race Matter?, Renata Forste Phd, Jessica Weiss Bs, Emily Lippincott Bs
Faculty Publications
Objectives. To estimate the effects of maternal and birth characteristics on the decision to breastfeed and to relate breastfeeding practices to racial differences in infant mortality.
Methods. Using a sample of women with young children from the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), Cycle V, 1995, the likelihood of breastfeeding was modeled using logistic regression techniques. In addition, single, live births from the NSFG 1988 and 1995 surveys were analyzed to model the effects of race and breastfeeding on infant mortality using Cox regression methods.
Results. After controlling for socioeconomic background and birth characteristics, race remained a strong predictor of …

Nutrient Content Of School Lunches And Packed Lunches As Consumed By Elementary School Students, Pamela Cheryl Hamilton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This study compared nutrient content and intake of student school and home-packed lunches. Food intake was estimated by weighing the food and leftovers of 114 elementary school children. Eighty-one percent (n = 92) consumed school lunches and nineteen percent (n = 22) consumed packed lunches. A nutrient analysis was conducted using Nutritionist V. Significant differences between the two types of lunch were determined using ANOVA and Tukeys Test (HSD.UEN), p < 0.05.;School lunches were nutritionally superior (p < 0.01) for protein, vitamin A, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B 12, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and dietary fiber; (p < 0.05) for calcium and niacin.;After considering food waste, intake from school lunch remained significantly higher (p < 0.01) for vitamin D, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc; (p < 0.05) for riboflavin, vitamin B 6, folate, and calcium.;It was also noted that intake of milk and other dairy foods was higher (p < 0.01) from school lunches.

Impacts Of Supplemental Feeding On The Nutritional Ecology Of Black Bears, Steven T. Partridge, Dale L. Nolte, Georg J. Ziegltrum, Charles T. Robbins
USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Black bear (Ursus americanus) damage to managed conifer stands during the spring in the U.S. Pacific Northwest is a continuing management concern. Because bear damage to managed conifers may reflect the limited availability of nutritious foods, supplemental feeding has been used to decrease damage. Highly palatable, pelleted feed is provided ad libitum from April until late June when berries ripen and such damage stops. We examined black bear use of supplemental feed during the spring and summer of 1998 and 1999 in western Washington. Bears were captured in areas where supplemental feed was provided and in control areas …

Investigating Determinants Of Macular Pigment Optical Density And Macular Pigment Distribution In Adults Aged 45--73: Can Enhanced Analytical Techniques Improve The Ability To Predict Macular Pigment Status?, Joanne Delaney Burke
Doctoral Dissertations
This research assessed the relationships of dietary, sex, and biochemical factors to macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and macular pigment (MP) distribution in 108 adults. Dietary assessment tools were evaluated for their ability to predict MP status. Macular pigment was assessed at four foveal sites and one parafoveal site. An average composite macular pigment value (CMPV) was calculated based on the MPOD results. Group mean MPOD results from most to least central retinal locations, were 0.43 (SE +/- 0.017), 0.36 (SE +/- 0.013), 0.28 (SE +/- 0.012), and 0.13 (SE +/- 0.008), respectively. The CMTV was 0.26 (SE +/- 0.0 …

Review: Factors Affecting Decisions On When To Calve Beef Females, L. R. Sprott, Pas G.E. Selk, D. C. Adams
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
The decision of when to calve beef females is critical to production efficiency and profitability in a cow and calf enterprise. Calf production and associated costs are affected by calving season because environmental conditions, stage of production, and season of the year interact to affect nutritional status and reproductive performance. Cow and calf producers typically choose to commence calving and breeding at times of the year when weather is least stressful and forage conditions are optimal. Choosing to do so can reduce the amount of supplemental feed needed to ensure acceptable pregnancy rates, resulting in reduced annual feed costs. However, …
