Laurel, Mississippi: A Historical Perspective., David Stanton Key Dec 2001

Laurel, Mississippi: A Historical Perspective., David Stanton Key

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Laurel, Mississippi, exemplifies the new southern development that occurred in the years following Reconstruction. Coinciding with continental rail building and the depletion of northern timber resources, Laurel emerged as one of Mississippi's great industrial centers. Laurel's survival after the early twentieth century timber boom predicated itself on the diversification of its industry coupled with the continued growth of its infrastructure. Although Laurel's industrial ascension is not unique in the annals of southern history, its duality regarding northern capitalistic impulses and southern labor and material serves as a successful industrial model in the era of "cut out and get out" sawmill …

A Tale Of Three Statutes . . . (And One Industry): A Case Study On The Competitive Effects Of Regulation, Rafael Gely Oct 2001

A Tale Of Three Statutes . . . (And One Industry): A Case Study On The Competitive Effects Of Regulation, Rafael Gely

Faculty Publications

The comparison of the three labor regulatory regimes raises an interesting counterexample to the traditional model of regulation. Instead of adopting a one-size-fits-all model, could a regulatory model be conceptualized where a menu of regulatory options is made available to the target population? Under such an approach those affected by the regulatory regime will choose among the various regulatory options and adopt those that better fit their particular situations. Part IV.B develops the basic parameters of this proposal. The article ends with a brief conclusion.

Transit Labor Relations Guide, Mti Report 01-02, Herbert H. Oestreich Sep 2001

Transit Labor Relations Guide, Mti Report 01-02, Herbert H. Oestreich

Mineta Transportation Institute

Transit organizations, both public and private, are under great internal and external pressures today to improve their organizational effectiveness. Studies have shown that the collective bargaining relationship between union and management, particularly the collective bargaining agreement, has a direct, measurable effect on organizational effectiveness. Both transit management and transit unions have begun to recognize that it is in their mutual interest to improve organizational effectiveness by turning toward a more cooperative collective bargaining relationship. In particular, they have experimented with a negotiating style called “interest-based bargaining” and with a problem solving approach through joint labor-management committees. There is a great …

Post -Displacement Employment In A Rural Community: Why Can't Women And Oil Mix?, Linda Anderson Tobin Jan 2001

Post -Displacement Employment In A Rural Community: Why Can't Women And Oil Mix?, Linda Anderson Tobin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of post-displacement labor market experiences of workers in a rural southern community in which there is a significant presence of the oil and gas industry. Using a guided conversation format, I talked with 99 community members, including displaced workers, representatives of the oil and gas industry, community leaders, and social service agencies. These conversations were used to explore opportunities and constraints found within this community with labor market implications for those displaced. Conversations show that both individual and structural factors explain post-displacement employment of these (predominantly) females. Though an expanding oil and gas industry requires an …

The Economic Case For Labor Standards: A Layman’S Guide, Thomas I. Palley Jan 2001

The Economic Case For Labor Standards: A Layman’S Guide, Thomas I. Palley

Richmond Journal of Global Law & Business

The place of labor standards in the global economy has figured prominently in recent discussions of trade and globalization. Labor standards figured prominently in the Seattle meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1999, and they promise to figure prominently in discussions about a proposed Free Trade Area of Americas (FTAA). Labor standards represent a critical issue for both the American labor movement and the international trade union movement as they are central to making globalization work for working people.

Does Free Trade Cause Hunger? Hidden Implications Of The Ftaa, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 2001

Does Free Trade Cause Hunger? Hidden Implications Of The Ftaa, Jonathan B. Wight

Richmond Journal of Global Law & Business

This division of labour, from which so many advantages are derived, is not originally the effects of any human wisdom, which forsees and intends that general opulence to which it gives occasion. It is the necessary, though very slow and gradual consequence of a certain propensity in human nature which has in view no such extensive utility; the propensity to truck, barter, and exchange one thing for another.

The Geography Of Injustice: Borders And The Continuing Immiseration Of California Agricultural Labor In Era Of "Free Trade", Don M. Mitchell Jan 2001

The Geography Of Injustice: Borders And The Continuing Immiseration Of California Agricultural Labor In Era Of "Free Trade", Don M. Mitchell

Richmond Journal of Global Law & Business

Why is it that when the reigning ideology governing the expansion of “free trade” is anti-regulatory”, all agree that the movement of people, or rather laborers, must be carefully regulated? Indeed, why are borders strengthened for people just as states of the Western Hemisphere embark on a thorough reconfiguration, and even a dismantling, or borders for capital and goods.

Extending Weingarten To The Nonunion Setting: A History Of Oscillation, Sarah C. Flannery Jan 2001

Extending Weingarten To The Nonunion Setting: A History Of Oscillation, Sarah C. Flannery

Cleveland State Law Review

Passed in response to the nineteenth century hostility towards union activity, the NLRA traditionally was viewed as a pro-union statute. However, as much as the Act contains provisions clearly aimed at protecting union activity, the Act explicitly applies to non-union employees as well as union employees. Nevertheless, many nonunion employers and employees are unaware of the existence of the NLRA despite it being the only law governing the relationship between an employer and its employees as a group in most private sector establishments in this country. This Note analyzes the conflicting history surrounding this issue and asserts that the necessary …

Essays On Semiparametric Estimation., Kang-Sun Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is primary concerned on the study of semiparametric estimation approaches. In the respect of the usage of econometric analysis that is evaluating theoretical relationship, the semiparametric analysis is useful to get the flexibility of functional form. The kernel-type nonparametric methods are used for semiparametric approaches in this dissertation. The first essay focuses upon performance of various bandwidth selectors in the local linear regression method. The results indicate that the variable bandwidth selector is superior to constant bandwidth selector in the more skewed data set or complicated functional form. LSCV bandwidth selector fit well in the simple functional form. …
