Once fed by burgeoning information technology, the credit-card industry is likely to succumb to further advances within the next few decades unless it adapts to the dynamics of economic activity in the 21st century.

This essay is based on remarks delivered at the fall of 1998 meeting of the Law School Community of Visitors. The article provides an in-depth analysis of the contract issues peculiar to automated electronic commerce. The aim of the study is to provide a critical evaluation of the various solutions that might be adopted by a legislature seeking to cure formal defects in agreements that are negotiated and entered into by software programs, independent of human review. The author begins with an examination of the current state of the technology that automates electronic commerce, offering some speculation as to its future development. There is increased awareness in the organizational and management literature that participation can make contributions in technology development. One of the problems in developing biotechnology in Thailand is that only a small portion of publicly funded research and development projects directly result in commercial success. Among the reasons cited (TDRI 1992a) is a lack of collaboration between various stakeholders; therefore, an effective technology policy to support their participation is needed. The Policy Research Action Group (PRAG), a now-retired portion of CURL, established the Community Access to Technology Working Group to explore community access and training with regards to technology in the context of universal access within the city of Chicago. The patent system has traditionally been viewed as having two primary functions: the reward function and the prospect function. Although these theories do explain some behavior which results from the practical applications of the patent system, they also overlook some behavior of the patent system which indicates a failure of these functions. Although the antitrust laws apply to all industries, the application must be tempered in each case by the myriad ways in which competition can be modified by structural, behavioral, technological, regulatory, and other characteristics. The Commission applies the antitrust laws with sensitivity to the special characteristics of high-tech industries and of intellectual property, but also with the recognition that--as in other industries--competition plays an important role in spurring innovation and in spreading the benefits of that innovation to consumers. The expectation that firms that have a high differentiation strategy will also have low levels of licensing is not supported. For business units (BU) with products in the growth stages, the competitive strategy of the BU did not significantly affect licensing decisions. The results are not too surprising when one considers new technological advancements and global competition. A company may perceive its technological advantage as transitory and expect rapid imitation by competitors. After a year of preparation and soliciting international support, the United States entered into agreement with Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the European Commission to conduct a project to test metal detectors suitable for humanitarian demining applications. This effort is seen as a pilot project for future international cooperation in demining technology development, and is a critical first step in formally establishing a functional, broadly based international program to test and evaluate humanitarian demining technology.

In Gabriel v. City of Chicago, the Northern District of Illinois held that, while pregnancy is not a per se disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA"),' pregnancy-related problems can be considered disabilities under the ADA. The holding in Gabriel, however, was not unique, as many other district courts have reached the same conclusion regarding pregnancy-related problems. The real question in cases such as Gabriel is whether the pregnancy-related problem at issue constitutes a disability under the ADA.
