The Effect Of Shelterwood-Cut Oak Forestry Practices On Breeding Bird Success, Patrick Lee Collins
The Effect Of Shelterwood-Cut Oak Forestry Practices On Breeding Bird Success, Patrick Lee Collins
Theses & Honors Papers
Populations of breeding birds were studied on two shelterwood-cut oak stands in Buckingham County, Virginia. These two tracts, Harris East and Harris West, were cut in 1996 and a Breeding Bird Census has been conducted on these tracts since 1997. This study is part of an ongoing effort to collect pre-bum data, and document the diversity of avian species utilizing this habitat. The changes in avian species present on the Harris East and Harris West plots is important to know so that the effects of shelterwood-cut forestry practices can be understood better. The data collected showed that, by changing the …
Breeding Bird Census On Four Shelterwood-Cut Stands In Buckingham County, Virginia, Sally Ann Statham
Breeding Bird Census On Four Shelterwood-Cut Stands In Buckingham County, Virginia, Sally Ann Statham
Theses & Honors Papers
The Breeding Bird Census (BBC) technique was used to study breeding bird populations on two paired shelter wood-cut oak stands in Buckingham County, Virginia. The four plots are part of a study to determine oak regeneration following controlled burns in the Virginia piedmont. There is an interest in determining how shelter wood-cut plots affect the breeding birds of Virginia. A total of twenty-seven bird species established and defended territories among the four plots. Ten bird species defended territories on all four plots. All of these species were birds characteristic of forest habitats.

Victorian Concepts Of The Ideal Man As Evidenced Through His Relationships With Animals: "If She Don't Carry You, You May Shoot Her" Or "Remember Gyp When You Get Home", Mary Ann Peebles Soles
Victorian Concepts Of The Ideal Man As Evidenced Through His Relationships With Animals: "If She Don't Carry You, You May Shoot Her" Or "Remember Gyp When You Get Home", Mary Ann Peebles Soles
Theses & Honors Papers
In Victorian fiction, the relationships between male characters and the animals with which they come in contact with are interesting. The way Victorian male characters are shown to treat animals revels something about the nature of the men themselves. Therefore, it is important to examine the concept of masculinity at the time. The gender stereotypes that prevailed in Victorian England had a tremendous impact on the portrayal of men and women in the novels written at that time. Male writers, the dominant sex, chose to preserve ideals already present. Female writers did the opposite. The Victorian novelists examined were influenced …

Survey Of Amphibians And Reptiles In Powhatan County, Virginia With Selected Natural History Notes, Jason Daniel Gibson
Survey Of Amphibians And Reptiles In Powhatan County, Virginia With Selected Natural History Notes, Jason Daniel Gibson
Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis establishes baseline data on the herpetofauna that exist in Powhatan county. No systematic study of the amphibians and reptiles in Powhatan county has ever been conducted. The methods used in this survey include hand capture, egg mass observations, road kill collections, and frog call surveys. Documentation of each species collected included measurements, photographs, range maps, and tape recordings.
This survey produced 8 species of salamanders, 11 anurans, 6 turtles, 4 lizards, and 14 snakes. Based on records in the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles of Virginia (Mitchell & Reay, 1999), 11 new county records were discovered. This brings …

Mary Elizabeth Braddon: Reconstructing Beauty From Portent Of Innocence To Potential Threat In Aurora Floyd And Lady Audley's Secret, Susan Bryant Cook
Mary Elizabeth Braddon: Reconstructing Beauty From Portent Of Innocence To Potential Threat In Aurora Floyd And Lady Audley's Secret, Susan Bryant Cook
Theses & Honors Papers
This explores the “sensation novels”, Lady Audley’s Secret and Aurora Floyd by Mary Elizabeth Braddon during the Victorian Era. These “sensation novels” ushered in characters that were not who they seemed to be which evoked mystery in the story. Braddon also centered on the idea of not relying on a woman’s appearance but rather seeing the woman as she truly is.
The Jewish Immigrant Perception Of The American Dream In Abraham Cahan's Yekl And Anzia Yezierska's Bread Givers, Andrea Verschaeve
The Jewish Immigrant Perception Of The American Dream In Abraham Cahan's Yekl And Anzia Yezierska's Bread Givers, Andrea Verschaeve
Theses & Honors Papers
Although there is a wide variety of writers in American literature, it can be said that immigrant writers are left out of the literary pool. In American literature, there is a common theme of defining the American dream. From the early colonies to now, each immigrant has their own definition of the “American dream”. However when it comes to Jewish writers, the American dream becomes a story of how the character will become a new citizen while still regarding their old culture. In “Yekl” by Abraham Cahan and “Bread Givers” by Anzia Yezierska, this Jewish-American dream is seen. Both works …
Development Of A Novel Method For Phenol Detection Using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography, Danette Young Carlton
Development Of A Novel Method For Phenol Detection Using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography, Danette Young Carlton
Theses & Honors Papers
The purpose of this study was to develop a more efficient method to test for phenol in both wastewater and non-wastewater. Phenol is a caustic and toxic contaminant that may be present in our water supplies. Phenol is used in various resins, pharmaceuticals, plastics and disinfectants. Environmental Protection Agency methods are available to test for phenol using gas chromatography along with mass spectrometry or flame ionization detection. Each of these methods can be a long, involved process consisting of extraction, many sample injections, and interference problems. This method developed an easier and less complicated approach of testing for phenol in …

An Evaluation Of Land Use Changes And Their Associated Hydrologic Impacts In The Birch Creek Watershed, Halifax County, Virginia 1986-1998, Melissa Anne Lloyd
Theses & Honors Papers
This project is a study of the water quality and land us e changes that have occurred in the Birch Creek watershed in Halifax County, Virginia from 1987 to 1998. The purpose of t his project i s to identify water quality trends and potential linkages to land use changes during the time frame of the study. The information was obtained by analyzing data collected by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The data had been gathered and archived, but not previously examined for trends or causal factors. Through the analysis, definite increasing and decreasing trends in the concentrations of …

Assimilation Or Acceptance: The Effects Of Industrialization On Appalachians In Anne W. Armstrong's This Day And Time And Harriette Arnow's The Dollmaker, Susan Litton Haslet
Assimilation Or Acceptance: The Effects Of Industrialization On Appalachians In Anne W. Armstrong's This Day And Time And Harriette Arnow's The Dollmaker, Susan Litton Haslet
Theses & Honors Papers
The novels This Day and Time and The Dollmaker were studied in this thesis. Both novels accurately present some of the effects that early industrialization had on the land and people of Appalachia. The authors of these novels, Anne Armstrong and Harriette Arnow, write about their subjects with honesty and authenticity, and having themselves witnessed many of the events in their novels. These authors are able to write from personal observation and memory as they capture on paper a period of transition in Appalachia and the character of its residents before and after they were influenced. The bittersweet events in …
