Summary Of Submissions To Fisheries Management Paper No. 126 : The South Coast Estuarine Fishery A Discussion Paper., Fisheries Western Australia.
Fisheries management papers
Fisheries Management Paper Number 126, ‘The South Coast Estuarine Fishery - A Discussion Paper’ presented a number of management proposals for consultation with stakeholders as a way forward in addressing ongoing, current and long-term issues relating to the long term sustainable management of the Fishery and the resource sharing issues that exist.

Abalone Aquaculture In Western Australia : Policy Guideline., Fisheries Western Australia.
Fisheries management papers
Experimental or commercial abalone aquaculture is being pursued in many countries with major investments in The United States, Taiwan, China and Korea as well as in Australia. The combined total abalone aquaculture production from China and Taiwan was reported to be in the order of 2,000 tonnes and continues to rise. As cultured ‘cocktail’ abalone are below the legal harvest size of wild abalone, there will be limited competition between aquaculture and the wild fisheries.

Review Of The Western Australian Pilchard Fishery 12 -16 April 1999, K. L. Cochane
Fisheries management papers
A workshop was held on Monday 12 April 1999 at which presentations were made by representatives of Fisheries WA, speakers from other state fisheries agencies and the Western Australian (WA) pilchard industry. This workshop identified some of the key concerns in the assessment and management of the fishery. This report presents the conclusions reached by the reviewer at the end of the process, which were also presented to members of the WA pilchard fishing industry in Albany on Friday 16 April.

Management Directions For Western Australia's Estuarine And Marine Embayment Fisheries : A Strategic Approach To Management., Fisheries Western Australia
Fisheries management papers
This paper does not attempt to provide solutions to individual fishery problems, nor to all of the strategic problems, nor does it claim to evaluate all the options available to managers. Rather, the paper is intended to trigger discussion as to how all interest groups can work together to achieve a balance for these fisheries and their environment. It is a starting point.

An Assessment Of The Efficacy Of Deep Drains Constructed In The Wheatbelt Of Western Australia Part 1 A Discussion On Drainage Implmentation In The Wheatbelt : A Case Study Review, Summary, Conclusions And Recommendations, N A. Coles, Richard J. George Dr, A D. Bathgate
Bulletins 4000 -
Australia has undertaken a strategic review of current and historical deep drainage projects. A 'rapid appraisal' methodology was utilised, based principally on existing hydrological investigations and interpretation and anecdotal evidence provided by landholders to clarify the role of drainage in managing water in dry land rural landscapes.
The objectives of this discussion paper are to:
1. Review the current status of groundwater drainage practice
2. Provide an assessment of deep drains in the landscape and
3. Propose recommendations on the development of drainage policy to enable the application of best management practice in groundwater drainage.

This document summarises the analyses carried out on the ground monitoring data from the Kimberley region of Western Australia as part of the Natural Heritage Trust project 953024 - ‘'Development of Information Products for Reporting Rangeland Changes.”
This project has been investigating ways of integrating rangeland trend information collated from Landsat satellite data and site-specific ground vegetation data. This has been carried out by extending and refining previous approaches developed by Agriculture Western Australia and CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences (e.g. Wallace et al. 1994). The principal objective of the project is to develop useful information products which …

Observations Of Shallow Groundwater Contamination Due To Leakage Of Dairy Effluent Ponds On The Swan Coastal Plain, Wa, Richard J. George Dr, D L. Bennett, J R M Bell, Roger Wrigley
Resource management technical reports
In response to the risk of pollution of surface water from farm runoff, dairy farmers have been encouraged to install effluent storage ponds. Previous research has indicated that leachate from these storages can contribute to groundwater contamination. This project assessed the performance of storages at eight sites on the Swan Coastal Plain (SCP), WA. Groundwater conditions were monitored for over three years to study the influence of soil type, water table depth and waste water characteristics.

The Objective
The 1999 Progress Rural WA Conference aims to build on the skills and exposure that many delegates have already had to inspiring and innovative practice from across the globe and the excellent practice currently being implemented by rural West Australians.
Our keynote speakers have been selected on their ability to paint the big picture - we want to heighten the excitement, push people beyond their comfort zones and stretch peoples thinking.
From project workshops and feedback across the state, we hear a number of common issues. The workshop themes have been developed to provide an action learning experience …

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Ophthalmia Dam On The Floodplains Of The Fortescue River On Ethel Creek And Roy Hill Stations, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell
Resource management technical reports
The area surveyed covered all of the floodplains of the Fortescue River, and Jigalong, Jimblebar and Carramulla Creeks which fall within Ethel Creek and Roy Hill stations. Two serious, distinct and largely unrelated environmental problems are evident on the area surveyed. The first problem is longstanding, severe landscape degradation in the form of almost complete loss of perennial vegetative cover and soil erosion (mainly scalding) due to historical overgrazing.

The Translocation Of Barramundi. A Discussion Paper., Makaira Pty Ltd
Fisheries management papers
There is recognisable economic benefit to the translocation of barramundi, but there is also a need to ensure the translocation will not adversely impact upon the genetic diversity, introduce disease or impact on the natural environment and biodiversity. This discussion paper has been prepared to provide information to assist in the assessment of the possible impact of translocation of barramundi into and within Western Australia, for the purposed of recreational stock enhancement, aquaculture development and domestic stocking. In contemplating the translocation any aquatic species, signigicant economic and social benefits must be balanced with biological and environmental risks; that is, the …

Proposals For Community Discussion. A Quality Future For Recreational Fishing In The Gascoyne. A Five-Year Management Strategy For Recreational Fishing., Gascoyne Recreational Fishing Working Group
Fisheries management papers
Gascoyne has seen a series of rapid developments in recreational fisheries management, starting with the introduction of state-wide bag limits in 1991; followed by area specific controls at Ningaloo in 1992; landing limits in Exmouth Gulf in 1993; strict controls on the take of pink snapper in Shark Bay’s inner gulfs in 1997; new bag limits for Shark Bay in 1998; and the introduction of a management system for the charter and aquatic tour industry in 1999. The management proposals presented for community discussion in this paper are aimed at maintaining or improving the quality and diversity of the Gascoyne's …

Coastal Land And Groundwater For Horticulture From Gingin To Augusta, Dennis Van Gool, Werner Runge
Coastal Land And Groundwater For Horticulture From Gingin To Augusta, Dennis Van Gool, Werner Runge
Resource management technical reports
Due to a variety of factors, including infrastructure needs, labour requirements and transport costs, horticulture is often located near major urban centres. This study focuses on the coastal plain region from Gingin to Augusta. This region accommodates over 80% of Western Australia’s population and includes the State’s major urban centres. This region accounts for over half the State’s horticultural production with a gross value of production of $244 million (adjusted ABS values, see section 1.2). Increasing population pressures and increasing demand for horticultural produce have resulted in competition for the limited land resources in this area.

In February this year nineteen people from all over Western Australia were brought together to explore their leadership potential. These nineteen people came from different walks of life and professions but they all had a common passion, rural Western Australia, and they all had a common goal - to gain skills so that they could lead this state into a thriving 21 century. Over the six months we grew very close and experienced great highs and lows. Without the support of our family and friends, employers and others we would not have accomplished half of what we have over the …
