Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1997, Central Bank Of Nigeria Dec 1997

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1997, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

In 1997, Nigeria experienced its third consecutive year of macroeconomic stability, resulting in modest improvement in domestic output growth and a persistently low inflation rate. The balance of payments position showed a modest surplus, and significant success was achieved in reducing domestic liquidity growth. Domestic output expanded further due to increased agricultural output and crude petroleum production, while the inflation rate declined further. Domestic output, measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increased by 3.8% in 1997, as against the average growth rate of 2.3% in the preceding three years. The fight against inflation was highly successful, reaching a single …

Changes In Eastern South Dakota Crops Patterns: 1950s To 1990s, Thomas L. Dobbs, Lisa M. Carr

Economics Pamphlet Series

This report contains background data for a study on possible impacts of the 1996 Farm Bill ("Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act of 1996") on crop system diversity. The study, being conducted by the Economics Department at South Dakota State University (SDSU), is focused on the 7-county area of eastern South Dakota shown in the map on the following page. This area constitutes a major portion of the Big Sioux River drainage area in South Dakota. The aquifer underlying the Big Sioux River in these counties provides drinking water for a significant portion of the State's population. Therefore, agricultural practices …

Ethanol - One Solution To Kentucky's Dependence On The Tobacco Economy, Jenna Stutts Medlin Nov 1997

Ethanol - One Solution To Kentucky's Dependence On The Tobacco Economy, Jenna Stutts Medlin

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Most farmers in the state of Kentucky have long been economically dependent on the lucrative tobacco crop, but the tobacco industry is showing the signs of deterioration. Many agricultural researchers suggest that the economic rewards derived from tobacco production will further decline as a result of legislative, economic, and social pressures. An agricultural alternative for traditional tobacco farmers is corn production, specifically corn production for ethanol plants.

Ldc Agriculture: Non-Parametric Malmquist Productivity Indexes, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Agricultural productivity in 41 Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries from 1960 to 1999 is examined by estimating a semi-nonparametric Fourier production frontier. Over the four decades the estimated rate of productivity change was 0.83% per year, although the average rate from 1985-99 was a strong 1.90% per year. Former UK colonies exhibited significantly higher productivity gains than others, while Liberia and countries that had been colonies of Portugal or Belgium exhibited net reductions in productivity. We measure a significant reduction in productivity during political conflicts and wars, and a significant increase in productivity among those countries with higher levels of political …

Defining The Financial Capacity Of Rural Communities To Meet Sewer And Water Needs, Ray Supalla, Saeed Ahmad

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

The relative ability of rural communities to pay for sewer and water systems was analyzed. It was found that median household income, as currently used for many grant programs, is a poor measure of relative need. An alternative approach using measures of wealth and income distribution was developed.

The Value Of Additional Central Flyway Wetlands In Nebraska’S Rainwater Basin Wetland Region, Joan Poor

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

Nebraska’s Rainwater Basin wetland region is recognized internationally as a significant wetland complex for migratory waterfowl habitat. A contingent valuation study was undertaken to determine Nebraskan’s willingness-to-pay for government acquisition/management programs for this resource. The study consisted of a double bounded referendum format. A censored regression model was utilized for data analysis.

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1996-97, Bruce B. Johnson, Bart Miller Jun 1997

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1996-97, Bruce B. Johnson, Bart Miller

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Agricultural real estate values in Nebraska rose an average of 7.6 percent during the year ending February 1, 1997, with the all-land average value climbing to $654 per acre. This represented the tenth consecutive year of value increases, but the percentage increase was the largest for the all-state average since 1988. The basis of these findings is the UNL Farm Real Estate Market Survey now in its 20th year.

Land value increases occurred across the entire state, although largest gains were associated with cropland in the predominantly cash-grain areas. A combination offavorable crop prices, good yields in 1996, and transition …

Value Based Marketing For Fed Cattle: A Discussion Of The Issues, Scott Fausti, Steve Schamber, Dwight Adamson Apr 1997

Value Based Marketing For Fed Cattle: A Discussion Of The Issues, Scott Fausti, Steve Schamber, Dwight Adamson

Economics Staff Paper Series

Beef demand in the United States began to weaken relative to the demand for pork and poultry in the 1970s. The literature offers two possible explanations: 1) the lifestyles explanation; and 2) the relative-price explanation. Barkema and Drabenstott (1990) review the literature concerning the market share issue and concisely outline the two possible explanations: "The lifestyle argument suggests that consumers chose to eat less beef due to health concerns and changes in lifestyles. The relative-prices explanation suggests consumers switched from beef to poultry because beef became relatively more expensive than poultry." The issue of improving beefs competitiveness against other domestic …

Relative Profitability And Production Costs Of Post-Crp Alternative Land Uses In South Dakota, Larry Janssen, Martin Beutler, Luarel Venuiszen Feb 1997

Relative Profitability And Production Costs Of Post-Crp Alternative Land Uses In South Dakota, Larry Janssen, Martin Beutler, Luarel Venuiszen

Economics Staff Paper Series

South Dakota (SD) has 2.06 million acres of CRP land with contracts expiring from 1996 - 2002. These CRP lands are 10.5% of cropland acres and 4.6% of land in farms in South Dakota. The major objective is to determine relative profitability of alternative crop and forage uses of post-contract CRP lands in different regions of South Dakota. Crop and forage per acre net returns were heavily influenced by relative productivity of CRP lands. The relative productivity of average CRP land compared to all cropland varies from 76% to 95% in eastern and central SD to 89% - 103% of …

Economic Impact Analysis Of Post-Crp Policy Options In South Dakota, Luarel Venuiszen, Martin Beutler, Larry Janssen

Economics Staff Paper Series

The primary objective of the study was to determine the major economic impacts on South Dakota of alternative future CRP decisions. Three steps were followed to find the economic impacts. First, the relative productivity differences between South Dakota CRP land and South Dakota crop land were determined. County Soil Survey Books and NRCS conservationists provided the necessary information for this step's completion. The second step determined the profitability of post-CRP land uses by sub-state region for three post-CRP policy options. CARE budgeting was employed using relative productivity information to find crop/forage net returns under full CRP, reduced CRP, and no …

Management Of California Oak Woodlands: Uncertainties And Modeling, Jay E. Noel, Richard P. Thompson Jan 1997

Management Of California Oak Woodlands: Uncertainties And Modeling, Jay E. Noel, Richard P. Thompson

Agribusiness

A mathematical policy model of oak woodlands is presented. The model illustrates the policy uncertainties that exist in the management of oak woodlands. These uncertainties include: (1) selection of a policy criterion function, (2) woodland dynamics, (3) initial and final state of the woodland stock. The paper provides a review of each of the uncertainty issues. The final section of the paper describes a modeling approach that can be developed to assist policy makers in evaluating alternative oak woodland policy actions.

“We Have Raffeled For The Elephant & Won!”: The Wool Industry At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Wool, next to cotton, is perhaps the most important of all textile fibers. Like most of their contemporaries, the Shakers of South Union, Kentucky, recognized the ease with which wool fibers were spun into yarn and the advantages of sturdy wool clothing. South Union’s textile industry grew from a simple carding mill to a full-fledged woolen factory with a 240-spindle spinning jack and 4 power looms. From its genesis in 1815 to its abrupt demised in 1868, the sect’s woolen industry provides a paradigm for the study of the United States’ textile industrialization.
