Little research has been done regarding the knowledge and developmental levels of adolescent smoking and the risks for health problems. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effectiveness of a smoking prevention program on the knowledge and attitudes of seventh and eighth grade students. Executive Summary: In response to both internal and national findings and concerns, the first Western Washington University Lifestyles Project Survey of alcohol and drug usage among Western students was conducted in 1992 as part of the University's on-going effort (a) to investigate students' college experience both in and out of the classroom; (b) to enhance those experiences which lead to personal and academic success; and (c) to reduce risk factors jeopardizing student success. The 1995 WWU Lifestyles Project Survey follow-up has the same goals as its predecessor. Both surveys were administered to random samples of students across all years in …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The United States faces increasing competition in the global marketplace. One viable way to strengthen America's competitive position in the global economy is to develop its human capital through a genuine commitment to and aggressive investment in its higher education system, which culminates in baccalaureate-level education. There are several benefits of a baccalaureate-level education, for both individuals and for the country. For individuals, there are self-development and economic benefits. It also identifies the concerns that African American parents have about their children's schooling and offers their suggestions for improvement; Twelve parents of African American students identified as "high-achieving" and of varying socioeconomic levels participated in either a focus group discussion or in an individual in-depth interview about parent involvement in education. Epstein's theoretical model …

Solving Problems By Analogy: The Benefits And Detriments Of Hints And Depressed Moods, Paula T. Hertel, Alicia J. Knoedler
Psychology Faculty Research
In Experiment 1, mildly depressed (dysphoric) and nondysphoric subjects tried to solve logic, problems that were analogous to subsequent target problems; then they attempted target solutions with or wit hour hints in the form of the analogues' themes. Target solutions were impaired by the hints in the nondysphoric group alone. Experiment 2A was a no-training control to verify that transfer did indeed occur. In Experiment 2B, all subjects received hints in the transfer phase; the training phase was either problem oriented (as in Experiment 1) or memory oriented. Again, nondysphoric subjects solved fewerproblems following problem-oriented training than did both dysphoric …
