Identifying Situational Constraints To Focus Quality Improvement In An Air Force Aerial Port, Timothy J. Pettit Sep 1996

Identifying Situational Constraints To Focus Quality Improvement In An Air Force Aerial Port, Timothy J. Pettit

Theses and Dissertations

This research analyzes the effects of situational constraints on individual performance within an Air Force Aerial Port squadron. Situational constraint research originated with laboratory studies by Peters and O'Connor in 1980 and was investigated in an Air Force field environment in 1984; mixed results were obtained. Laboratory studies identified direct performance inhibitors (Peters et al., 1980); however, field studies found little correlations with job performance (Kane, 1981; O'Connor et al., 1984a). Data collected in June 1995 (Dougherty, 1995) and March 1996, in this study, were used to accomplish a longitudinal analysis. Correlations between constraints and performance were also low in …

The Influence Of Time Pressure And Information Load On Rule-Based Decision-Making Performance, Brooke Browne Schaab Jul 1996

The Influence Of Time Pressure And Information Load On Rule-Based Decision-Making Performance, Brooke Browne Schaab

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Performance was evaluated under varying levels of time pressure and information load to determine their influence on simple rule-based decision-making. Consistent errors, biases, and heuristics found in human decision-making have been attributed to attempts to reduce attentional demands and to the limitations of working memory. Do these same mistakes occur when little or no demand is placed on working memory and the decision is made by following a set of simple rules? Using a simulation of a radar operator's task, 96 participants monitored a display for 24 min. Time pressure was manipulated by increasing or decreasing the number of aircraft …

Evaluation Of Superior Performing Portland Cement Concrete Pavements In Kentucky, Jerry G. Rose, Bobby W. Meade, David Q. Hunsucker

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This research report describes a program of study directed at determining common factors which have contributed to the superior performances of selected sections of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements in Kentucky. The program involved an extensive survey of Kentucky's interstate, partway and other primary routes to determine locations of PCC pavement sections greater than 15 years old that had performed satisfactorily with minimal maintenance. Twelve of the best performing PCC pavements with long service life and heavy traffic were selected for detailed evaluations. Initial designs were documented and a series of in-situ pavement tests were conducted including core dnlling and …

Cognitive Workload And Performance Evaluation In A Telemedical Simulation, Jennifer Jean Hahus Jan 1996

Cognitive Workload And Performance Evaluation In A Telemedical Simulation, Jennifer Jean Hahus

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Telecommunication is a rapidly expanding form o f interacting with a distant party. Medicine has become a popular forum for using this technology in a field known as telemedicine. Telemedical interactions may involve anything from transmitting x-rays over great distances to examining a patient in real time via a television monitor. The introduction of any new technology carries the potential of both benefits and risks. Among these are potential risks to both medical patients and providers. The present research addresses one such risk: the consequences of excessive cognitive workload imposed by the telecommunication per se. It was the goal of …

The Effects Of Environment Dynamism And Heterogeneity On Salespeople's Role Perceptions, Performance And Job Satisfaction, Ravipreet S. Sohi Jan 1996

The Effects Of Environment Dynamism And Heterogeneity On Salespeople's Role Perceptions, Performance And Job Satisfaction, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

This article develops a structural equations model which examines the effects of environmental dynamism and heterogeneity on salespeople’s role conflict, role ambiguity, performance and job satisfaction. The model is tested with EQS, using data collected from 230 salespeople in multiple companies and industries. Indicates that environmental dynamism reduces satisfaction and performance, and increases role conflict and ambiguity. Notes that environmental heterogeneity also reduces performance and increases role conflict, but does not have a significant effect on role ambiguity.

Performance Issues In U.S.–China Joint Ventures, Gregory E. Osland, S. Tamer Cavugsil Jan 1996

Performance Issues In U.S.–China Joint Ventures, Gregory E. Osland, S. Tamer Cavugsil

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Based on an in-depth study of U.S.-China joint ventures, this article offers some insights into the performance of such international business relationships. While the conventional literature treats government as an amorphous aspea of the political-legal environment, in this case government is an active participant and influence in the performance of international joint ventures (UVs). It has both a constraining and enabling effect on LJV structure, strategy, and performance. For example, limits can be placed on ownership shares of joint ventures and on prices of the output. At the same time, government can cooperate with LJVs and foreign parent companies by …

A Numerical Investigation Of Performance And Optimization Trends Of Direct Contact Heat Exchangers, Richard Arlen Brickman Jan 1996

A Numerical Investigation Of Performance And Optimization Trends Of Direct Contact Heat Exchangers, Richard Arlen Brickman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A numerical model has been developed that can be used for industrial design of a wide range of direct contact heat exchangers (DCHXs). This model is built from some earlier work where a one-dimensional model was used to describe some very specific and limited DCHX spray-column configurations. Changes to the initial model are proposed to reflect more accurately the physics of the flows found in both two- and three-phase DCHXs. In addition, generalizations are incorporated into the model to be able to analyze a wide variety of fluid combinations and roles (either as the dispersed flow or as the continuous …

Performance measured by these ratios …

Filling The Empty Space: Women And Latin American Theatre, Kirsten F. Nigro Jan 1996

Filling The Empty Space: Women And Latin American Theatre, Kirsten F. Nigro

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

In recent years, Latin American women have begun to appropriate and fill a space once empty of their presence. This essay looks at the work of four such women, (Diana Raznovich and Cristina Escofet of Argentina, Raquel Araujo of Mexico and the Peruvian Sara Joffre), to see how they give substance and voice to their particular concerns. In the process, this essay focusses on: 1) the notion of gender as performance; 2) the feminist deconstruction of narrative; 3) the female body in theatrical space; and 4) new, postmodern ways of doing feminist political theatre.

A Hybrid Observer For High Performance Brushless Dc Motor Drives, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff Jan 1996

A Hybrid Observer For High Performance Brushless Dc Motor Drives, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Brushless DC motor drive systems are used in a wide variety of applications. These drives may be classified as being one of two types: sinusoidal drives in which there are no low-frequency harmonics in the current waveforms and no low-frequency torque ripple; and nonsinusoidal drives in which there is considerable low-frequency harmonic content, both in the current and torque waveforms. Although sinusoidal drives feature superior performance, they are generally more expensive since rotor position must be sensed on a continuous basis, thus requiring an optical encoder or a resolver, whereas relatively inexpensive Hall-effect sensors may be used for nonsinusoidal drives. …
