Cetacean Consciousness In Katz's Whalesinger And L'Engle's A Ring Of Endless Light, J. R. Wytenbroek Oct 1996

Cetacean Consciousness In Katz's Whalesinger And L'Engle's A Ring Of Endless Light, J. R. Wytenbroek

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Both Canadian fantasist Welwyn Wilton Katz and American fantasist Madeleine L’Engle have written novels in which humans, in communicating with whales or dolphins, have been exposed to wholeness, harmony, unity, and pattern in the universe at large as perceived by cetaceans. While writing quite independently, these works show a remarkable similarity in their perception of cetacean consciousness. An exploration of these similarities shows the united mystical vision that writers from different backgrounds and beliefs can attain.

Relationship Between Life Change Events And Communication Apprehension, Elaine Bylund Aug 1996

Relationship Between Life Change Events And Communication Apprehension, Elaine Bylund

Student Work

This research investigates relationships between communication apprehension (CA) and life change events, using college students at a Midwestern university. Instruments used were the Personal Report o f Communication Apprehension-24 (PRCA- 24) which measured CA, both overall and in four subareas, and a modified version of the Adolescent Life Change Event Questionnaire (ALCEQ), which records life change events during formative years and past year before being questioned.

No significant relationships were found between the overall scores of the two instruments in this study, although demographic information showed that the younger college students reported more public speaking apprehension than the older groups. …

Design,Analysis And Routing In Static Interconnection Networks., Rajib Kumar Das Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Many real-life applications such as image processing, weather forecasting, digital signal processing, etc., require large amount of computations. By distributing the task among several processors, one can appreciably reduce the computation time. To solve complex problems, several computer architectures using multiple processors have been introduced. Recent developments in IC technology have made it economically feasible to construct multiple processor systems consisting of hundreds or thousands of processors. There are two types of multiprocessor systems (PS87). One is tightly coupled, where the processors share a common clock and/or memory. The other is loosely coupled, where each processor runs independently with a local …

The Content Of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers As The Source Of Antisocial And Prosocial Learning., Cynthia J. Wilhelmi

Student Work

As the youth crime rate continues to climb in the United States, concerned parents and government officials wonder how much television is influencing our nation's children. Research most often reported by the media says that violent action shown on television can cause the same kind of action by children who watch those kinds of programs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers children's television program has specifically been under attack by parents. CNN estimated that over 100 acts of violence per episode are being shown -- although no research supporting this figure could be found for documentation. The present study investigates the …

Communication Games, Kimberly I. Noonan May 1996

Communication Games, Kimberly I. Noonan

Honors Theses

A communication game combines traditional n-person game theory with graph theory. The result is a model of a bargaining situation where communication is restricted. The game's multilinear extension (MLE), a polynomial that summarizes the solutions of the game, is well known for the case where the graph is a tree or simple cycle. This paper simplifies the computation of MLE of the communication game in the case when the graph is a series of simple cycles. The results are then applied to studying the power of each Canadian province in passing an amendment to the constitution, taking geographic location into …

Television Photojournalism And Ethical Decision-Making, Heather Rizzuto May 1996

Television Photojournalism And Ethical Decision-Making, Heather Rizzuto

Student Work

Photojournalists make daily decisions about hot to shoot a new story, and what images to broadcast to the public. Some of these decisions are routine, only dependent on the photojournalist’s individual storytelling style. But some of these decisions fall into the gray area of ethics. This thesis surveyed 135 television photojournalists about their ethical beliefs and practices.

Online, On Trial: Pornography, The Constitution And The Communications Decency Act Of 1996, Brian E. Bowcut

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Cyberspace, in its present condition has a lot in common with the 19th Century West. It is vast, unmapped, culturally and legally ambiguous ... hard to get around in, and up for grabs. ...It is, of course, a perfect breeding ground for both outlaws and new ideas about liberty...1

So assesses Grateful Dead lyricist-turned-cyberguru John Perry Barlow the new frontier, that vast expanse of computer networks known as the Internet. Yet, in recent months, the law has come to this chaotic domain, where anything goes and nothing remains unsaid. With the passage of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA), …

Fulfillment Of Marital Expectations In Relation To Communication Style And Parents' Marital Interactions, Shawn Corey Edgington May 1996

Fulfillment Of Marital Expectations In Relation To Communication Style And Parents' Marital Interactions, Shawn Corey Edgington

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of communication variables and parent marital variables with the fulfillment of marital expectations among newlyweds. Little research has been done on newlywed expectations and communication. This is an exploratory study conducted to determine how newlyweds' exposure to parents' marital interactions and communication styles correlated with newlyweds' fulfillment of marital expectations. Fifty newlywed couples (married 3-6 months) filled out the Marital Comparison Level Index (MCLI) questionnaire about their level of fulfillment of expectations. Couples were then videotaped talking to one another about the strengths of their marriage followed by a discussion …

Public Journalism: Its Definition And Application At Four Gannett-Owned Newspapers, Stacey J. Floersch

Student Work

The concept of public journalism has evolved only within the last five years, but already it has made an impact on journalist and scholars alike. Public journalism is a movement within newspapers that is trying to reconnect citizens with their newspapers, communities and political life. Public journalism is also a theory that encourages journalist to break from the conventional idea of detachment and show concern for whether public life is good.
