Conducting Interorganizational Research Using Key Informants, Nirmalya Kumar, Louis W. Stern, James C. Anderson Dec 1993

Conducting Interorganizational Research Using Key Informants, Nirmalya Kumar, Louis W. Stern, James C. Anderson

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this article, we examine the use of the key informant methodology by researchers investigating interorganizational relationships. Authors have advocated the use of multiple informants to increase the reliability and validity of informant reports. However, interorganizational research still tends to rely on single informants. We investigated informant selection and obtaining perceptual agreement among multiple informants, two problems that may have inhibited widespread use of multiple informants. We suggest procedures for dealing with those problems and provide an illustrative application of our proposals.

Performance Analysis Of Two Bridged Csma/Cd Networks, C. C. Ko, W. C. Wang, J. L. Du, Robert H. Deng, K. M. Lye

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper analyses the performance of two non-persistent CSMA/CD LANs linked by a bridge. The main function of the bridge is to buffer all internet work packets and forward them across networks to their destinations. From establishing and solving the main equations governing the behaviour of the bridged networks, the effects of design parameters such as the bridge buffer size and re-transmission back off delay on the performance of the system are studied. It is shown that if these parameters are chosen properly, better throughput and delay performance can be obtained, when compared with an equivalent CSMA/CD network without using …

Sheep And Wool Industries Need To Improve Their Performance, Rob Kelly, Tim Marshall Jan 1993

Sheep And Wool Industries Need To Improve Their Performance, Rob Kelly, Tim Marshall

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Today in Western Australia, sheep are run at slightly higher stocking rates, are achieving greater lambing percentages (up JO per cent) and higher wool cuts per animal ( up 0. 6 kg greasy) than in the 1960s. When all components of production are considered, the productivity of sheep fanns has increased by 2. 7 per cent per year over the past 35 years.

The challenge of the next decade is to achieve substantially greater rates of improvement than for past years if the sheep and wool industries are to maintain their significant place in Western Australian agriculture.

Design Of Distortion-Invariant Correlation Filters Using Supervised Learning, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Rufus H. Cofer, Wesley E. Foor

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We designed binary phase-only filters from a training set of images using a statistical approach. We forced images into clusters and designed filters to recognize objects from that cluster. We report on results obtained by computer simulation comparing the performance of filters to recognize objects from clusters of one and two classes.

Performance Evaluation Of Distributed Mutual Exclusion Algorithms, Kenneth B Been Jan 1993

Performance Evaluation Of Distributed Mutual Exclusion Algorithms, Kenneth B Been

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In any system in which concurrent processes share resources, mutual exclusion refers to the problem of guaranteeing the integrity of those resources by restricting their use to one process at a time. Due the complex nature of distributed systems, distributed mutual exclusion algorithms are often not amenable to theoretical analysis for performance or even correctness. Experimental inquiries are therefore warranted. This thesis investigates seven well known distributed mutual exclusion algorithms in detail, and uses computer simulation to evaluate the performance and applicability of these various algorithms. Toward this end, a realistic and general model for evaluating distributed algorithms is proposed. …

The Use Of Synthesized Images To Evaluate The Performance Of Ocr Devices And Algorithms, Frank Robert Jenkins Jan 1993

The Use Of Synthesized Images To Evaluate The Performance Of Ocr Devices And Algorithms, Frank Robert Jenkins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will attempt to establish if synthesized images can be used to predict the performance of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) algorithms and devices. The value of this research lies in reducing the considerable costs associated with preparing test images for OCR research. The paper reports on a series of experiments in which synthesized images of text files in nine different fonts and sizes are input to eight commercial OCR devices. The method used to create the images is explained and a detailed analysis of the character and word confusion between the output and the true text files is presented. …

Prediction Of Performance Criteria For Passive Heating Ventilation And Air Conditioning Silencers, Mark Olen Bodie Jan 1993

Prediction Of Performance Criteria For Passive Heating Ventilation And Air Conditioning Silencers, Mark Olen Bodie

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Unwanted noise is generated by the operation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in large buildings. The unwanted noise can be reduced by installing a passive silencer in the HVAC system. The ability to predict the performance criteria (insertion loss, regenerated sound power, and pressure drop) associated with a passive silencer is of great importance to the HVAC engineer. The purpose of this thesis is to predict the performance criteria listed above. Empirically derived regression equations are provided which calculate the performance criteria associated with 2ft x 2ft cross sectional area rectangular passive silencers for various internal geometries …

A Fast Converging, Low Complexity Adaptive Filtering Algorithm, Steven L. Grant Jan 1993

A Fast Converging, Low Complexity Adaptive Filtering Algorithm, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a new adaptive filtering algorithm called fast affine projections (FAP). Its main attributes include RLS (recursive least squares) like convergence and tracking with NLMS (normalized least mean squares) like complexity. This mix of complexity and performance is similar to the recently introduced fast Newton transversal filter (FNTF) algorithm. While FAP shares some similar properties with FNTF it is derived from a different perspective, namely the generalization of the affine projection interpretation of NLMS. FAP relies on a sliding windowed fast RLS (FRLS) algorithm to generate forward and backward prediction vectors and expected prediction error energies. Since sliding …
