The Potential For Agricultural Development In Utah, Donald L. Snyder, Terrence F. Glover Sep 1985

The Potential For Agricultural Development In Utah, Donald L. Snyder, Terrence F. Glover

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Many factors contribute to the expansion of existing industries and/or the development of new ones. First, a shift in population densities can produce a shift in production areas given that transportation is not costless. Second, a significant change in local, regional, or state business climate can induce certain businesses to change locations. Third, a discovery or sudden availability of certain types of resources can also bring about such a change. Fourth, changes in market structure or industrial organization often result in production shifts. Fifth, enterprising producers often serve as catylists to encourage the development of new enterprises in a particular …

Final Draft Report: Economic Policy Options For Utah Agriculture, Donald L. Snyder, Jay C. Andersen, Deevon Bailey, E. Bruce Godfrey Sep 1985

Final Draft Report: Economic Policy Options For Utah Agriculture, Donald L. Snyder, Jay C. Andersen, Deevon Bailey, E. Bruce Godfrey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

As a general rule, economists seldom advocate policy options. They prefer to discuss advantages and disadvantages. Primarily, this is because of an inherent belief that the market does provide for an efficient allocation of goods and services for those participating in that particular market. However, it is widely recognized that the market will not allocate efficiently if certain impediments exist. Furthermore, in situations where the market cannot reflect true social costs and benefits, some corrective actions may be required.

Agriculture Policy Decisions: A Perspective From South Dakota Farmers And Ranchers, Larry Janssen, Mark Edelman Aug 1985

Agriculture Policy Decisions: A Perspective From South Dakota Farmers And Ranchers, Larry Janssen, Mark Edelman

Economics Research Reports

Federal government policies greatly affect farmers and ranchers. Most South Dakota farmers and ranchers favor changes in the process used to make farm policy decisions but are split on the desirable future direction of farm commodity programs. A majority of producers favor existing or modified loan rate, target price, and farmer owned grain reserve program but are sharply divided on payment-in-kind (PIK) programs. Most producers favor the market growth provided by world trade but are not willing to give up minimum trade barriers, these barriers provide some cushion from the instability caused by international trade system. In addition, farmers are …

Small Farmers' Cooperatives In Brazil, 1964-1984 Reasons For Success Or Failure, Henry H. Gerber Jul 1985

Small Farmers' Cooperatives In Brazil, 1964-1984 Reasons For Success Or Failure, Henry H. Gerber

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This study is concerned with cooperative business enterprises of small farmers. The topic has been chosen because peasants' association in supply and marketing cooperatives is considered an essential element in rural development. The author's field experience leads him to agree in principle with this assumption. But, as exemplified by Brazil, a variety of factors (ecological, sociohistorical, legal, economic and so forth) may hinder or help the inception and survival of cooperatives.

Thus, if a government aims at integrating the small producer into the national economy as supplier and consumer (as in Brazil), measures to implement t~is policy must not be …

Maximizing Regional Gross Output In A Constrained Setting, John E. Keith, Luis Martinez, Donald L. Snyder, Terrence F. Glover

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Most regional policy-makers have, as one of their important policy goals, some form of maximization of regional economic activity. Obtaining maximum output, employment, and income from a state's, or region's, resource base appears to be central to many planning and policy agencies. For example, the State of Utah considered limiting the sources of coal for new electrical generation plants in the state, to in-state coal fields through legislative or administrative fiat. While such a policy was not implemented, it represents the conviction that verticle integration within a region will increase that region's economic welfare. The wide-spread use of industrial revenue …

The Status Of Utah's Agriculture And Its Contribution To The State Economy, Jay C. Andersen, Donald L. Snyder, Terrence F. Glover Feb 1985

The Status Of Utah's Agriculture And Its Contribution To The State Economy, Jay C. Andersen, Donald L. Snyder, Terrence F. Glover

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Growth in agricultural productivity and the migration of labor from agriculture to other employment has been a source of growth for the whole economy. From the times of pioneer settlement in Utah, more than 130 years ago, agricultural production has declined as a proportion of total economic activity. Employment, personal income, gross sales, and other measures can be shown to have declined as a proportion of the totals of these measures for the state. Yet, it is this very decline in dependence on workers producing food that has helped the economy to grow in size and variety both in Utah …

Modification Of Rice Flour And Its Potential Use In The Food Industry., Samir Sideek Alhusaini Jan 1985

Modification Of Rice Flour And Its Potential Use In The Food Industry., Samir Sideek Alhusaini

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Rice flour was modified with either 0.1, 1.0 and 5.0% acetic or succinic anhydride for 1, 6 and 18 hr under basic conditions. The pH was maintained above 7.0 using either sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. The results showed that modified rice flours had lower fat content as compared with the unmodified rice flour (control). The type of anhydride significantly influenced the fat content of rice flour. Ash content of rice flour increased significantly due to the anhydride concentrations and alkali type. Significant differences were also found in the protein content of modified rice flours due to the use of …

Assessment Of Dairy Product Quality Utilizing Bacterial Enumeration And Metabolite Detection., Jay Russell Bishop Jan 1985

Assessment Of Dairy Product Quality Utilizing Bacterial Enumeration And Metabolite Detection., Jay Russell Bishop

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study was conducted to investigate the use of bacterial numbers and metabolites as estimators of the potential shelf-life of perishable dairy products, i.e., whole milk, skim milk and cottage cheese. The study was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, a method of impedance detection was performed at two incubation temperatures (18(DEGREES)C and 21(DEGREES)C), and its ability to estimate shelf-life of 100 commercially purchased milk samples compared to standard plate count (SPC), psychrotrophic bacteria count (PBC), modified psychrotrophic bacteria count (mPBC) and Mosely keeping quality test (MSPC). MSPC appeared to possess an adequate relationship to shelf-life (R = …

Growth, Efficiency And Physiological Changes Of Swine As Affected By Environmental Temperature, Energy Level And Lysine Source And Level (Fat, Season)., Alberto Ramon Ojeda

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two consecutive summer and winter trials involving low and high-heat increment diets were fed to growing-finishing swine, and three trials evaluating crystalline lysine utilization were conducted during the starting phase of growth. Dehydrated alfalfa meal and vegetable oil in factorial combination were fed during the winter months. Crystalline lysine and vegetable oil, also in factorial combination, were fed during the summer months. In the lysine utilization trials, crystalline or protein-bound lysine were each fed at three levels. Response criteria evaluated were rats and efficiency of gain, serum T(,3), T(,4) and cholesterol level in the winter and summer trials; and rate …

Strawberry Response To Collectotrichum Fragariae And Colletotrichum Acutatum (Anthracnose, Crown Rot)., Barbara Jones Smith Jan 1985

Strawberry Response To Collectotrichum Fragariae And Colletotrichum Acutatum (Anthracnose, Crown Rot)., Barbara Jones Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Colletotrichum fragariae Brooks, the causal agent of strawberry anthracnose (referred to herein as anthracnose-crown rot), has been reported to infect all above ground parts of the strawberry plant. Colletotrichum acutatum Simmonds is known to cause ripe rot of several fruits including strawberry. Twenty-four Colletotrichum isolates obtained from strawberry plants from several southeastern states and California were compared. Based on conidial morphology and cultural characteristics, 15 of the isolates were identified as C. fragariae and nine as C. acutatum. Two of the C. acutatum isolates were obtained from field grown plants exhibiting crown rot symptoms. This is the first report of …

Detection Of Clavibacter Xyli Subsp. Xyli, The Ratoon Stunting Disease Bacterium, In Sugarcane By Dot Blot Hybridization., Jimmy Michael Kamso-Pratt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recombinant DNA technology was used to produce a probe for detection of Clavibacter xyli subsp. xyli, the sugarcane ratoon stunting disease agent. C. xyli, subsp. xyli chromosomal DNA was digested with the restriction enzyme Pst 1, inserted into the plasmid pUC 19, and transformed into Escherichia coli JM 83. Recombinant clones containing six different sizes of C. xyli subsp. xyli DNA sequences were obtained. Plasmid K3-5, with an insert of 4.9Kb, and C. xyli subsp. xyli chromosomal DNA, were radiolabelled by nick translation using dCTP or dATP (alpha-('32)P). The labelled DNAs were used to detect homologous DNA sequences present in …

Chapter Iii: Occupations Of Danish Immigrants Jan 1985

Chapter Iii: Occupations Of Danish Immigrants

The Bridge

When the Danish immigrants arrived in America, their career plans were influenced by economic aspirations and occupational background. Nearly half of the immigrants had worked in agriculture, chiefly as landless laborers. They frequently planned to acquire land of their own. Most of the rest were urban laborers or artisans hoping to find higher wages and broader opportunities in America. The motivating force behind most emigration was dissatisfaction with the economic situation in Denmark. In looking for something new and better, emigrants indicated their willingness to accept the various occupations which America offered. After all, life had to be better in …

Response To Single Trait And Multiple Trait Sire Selection In Holstein Cattle (Milk Production, Body Conformation, Reproduction, Breeding Value)., Gary Morgan Hay Jan 1985

Response To Single Trait And Multiple Trait Sire Selection In Holstein Cattle (Milk Production, Body Conformation, Reproduction, Breeding Value)., Gary Morgan Hay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Direct and correlated responses from two different sire selection strategies were compared for twelve characteristics of dairy cattle. Daughters of sires selected on genetic merit for milk production (ST) were compared to daughters of sires selected on genetic merit for an index of milk production, fat production and type scores (MT). Data consisted of repeated measures of twelve dairy traits on 275 foundation through third generation Holstein cows in a single herd. First through third generation animals represented daughters of 42 AI sires. Phenotypic response to selection was change in first lactation performance and producing ability per generation and per …

G85-753 Irrigation Scheduling Using Crop Water Use Data, C. Dean Yonts, Norman L. Klocke Jan 1985

G85-753 Irrigation Scheduling Using Crop Water Use Data, C. Dean Yonts, Norman L. Klocke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes using the "checkbook" method to schedule irrigations based on crop water use data.

Irrigation scheduling determines when and how much water to apply to meet crop demand. Soil water status and current crop water use are key factors for scheduling irrigations. Field observations and crop growth stage are important, but scheduled irrigations result in better rainfall use while avoiding crop water stress or excessive irrigation.

G85-758 Protective Clothing And Equipment For Pesticide Appliactors (Revised September 2002), Larry D. Schulze, Clyde Ogg Jan 1985

G85-758 Protective Clothing And Equipment For Pesticide Appliactors (Revised September 2002), Larry D. Schulze, Clyde Ogg

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Pesticides are valuable pest management tools, and like any tool, they must be used carefully and responsibly. Minimizing exposure is an important first step toward reducing your risk of pesticide poisoning. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) provides benefits to the applicator and is a visual expression of appropriate and legal pesticide use.\

Use all pesticides safely. Read the pesticide product label and comply with all directions. Failure to do so may not only subject you to state and/or federal penalties, but it also may place you, your family, and the environment at a greater risk of pesticide exposure.
