Legitimacy For The Florida Midwife: The Midwifery Practice Act, Katherine Simmons Yagerman
Legitimacy For The Florida Midwife: The Midwifery Practice Act, Katherine Simmons Yagerman
University of Miami Law Review
The rite of childbirth once belonged to the mother and her midwife, a companion and attendant interned in the mysteries of human birth. Modern medicine usurped that position, replacing the midwife with the professional physician. The author traces the journey of the midwife to her present status as a legitimate source of obstetrical care and examines the Florida Legislature's recent enactment of the Midwifery Practice Act.

The Effects Of Exercise On Women's Self-Esteem, Wendy Laurie Biddle
The Effects Of Exercise On Women's Self-Esteem, Wendy Laurie Biddle
Nursing Theses & Dissertations
The effects of a 12-week session of aerobic dancing were examined on two groups of women, assigned into fit and unfit groups. The subjects had voluntarily enrolled in aerobic dancing prior to the study. Self-Esteem scores were obtained using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale during the first and tenth or eleventh weeks of the session. Pretest and posttest scores were analyzed along with the variables of age, marital status, weight loss, and smoking habits. A significantly higher gain score (posttest score subtracted from pretest score) was found on those women who attended three weekly classes compared to those who attended two …

Satisfying And Unsatisfying Therapy Relationships Between Women: Female Therapists' Perspectives/, Sandra B. Levy
Satisfying And Unsatisfying Therapy Relationships Between Women: Female Therapists' Perspectives/, Sandra B. Levy
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Two areas which have received insufficient attention in the psychological research literature are gender-pair related issues in psychotherapy and the therapeutic relationship. A joint consideration of psychoanalytic and feminist theory suggests that the quality of intimacy established between women in psychotherapy will impact upon therapists' perceptions of relationship satisfaction and treatment outcome. In particular, the interrelated dimensions of nurturance and individuation are pointed to by the theoretical literature as salient in defining the nature of intimacy in the female/female therapy relationship.
The Relationship Between A Restrained Eating Style And Body Image Disturbances In College Women., Amy Auslander Hirsch
The Relationship Between A Restrained Eating Style And Body Image Disturbances In College Women., Amy Auslander Hirsch
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Much attention has been devoted to the study of body image and eating disorders in women. A review of the literature suggests that emphasis has been placed on stereotypic disturbances in body image within two discrete populations, the obese and the anorectic (Stunkard, 1976). Further scrutiny of the literature reveals that body image is a vaguely defined concept, one that's assigned a multitude of meanings and measured in a variety of ways (Kolb, 1959). Despite the complexity of studying such a multi-faceted construct, body image has import in its summary of affective, cognitive, and perceptual bodily experiences (Kessler, 1978; Shontz, …

Moving Beyond The Mask: The Progression Of Women In Christina Rossetti's Poetry, Marianne Skoczek
Moving Beyond The Mask: The Progression Of Women In Christina Rossetti's Poetry, Marianne Skoczek
Honors Papers
In this paper I will be concerned with one of these more neglected perspectives. I will be looking at the image of women as portrayed in Rossetti's non-devotional poetry, showing that, contrary to what I suppose could be called popular (literary) opinion, her women are often -- and increasingly so -- strong rather than weak, and that Rossetti herself was a conscious observer and critic of the "options" open to the Victorian woman. Given the emphasis that my work will take, I shall also be looking at various aspects of the poet's personal life, some of which have been largely …

Cooperativas De Vendedoras De Los Mercados: Dan Préstamos A Las Mujeres, Judith Bruce
Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Surrogate Gestation And The Protection Of Choice, Louise E. Graham
Surrogate Gestation And The Protection Of Choice, Louise E. Graham
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Proponents of surrogate gestation contracts base their case on both the constitutional privacy rights of persons involved in the contract and the notion that contractual agreements are capable of sufficiently protecting all interests involved. This article first speculates on how courts might handle surrogate gestation contracts under existing laws and offers arguments for and against such contracts. Although some commentary on the contractual aspect of the agreement exists, little attention has been given to the privacy arguments of the parties. The major focus of this article, therefore, is upon the nature of the privacy claims asserted by the prospective parents …

Community Property After Hisquierdo V. Hisquierdo, Marie Stefanini Newman
Community Property After Hisquierdo V. Hisquierdo, Marie Stefanini Newman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This Comment will briefly discuss California's community property system, and the standards traditionally required by the Supreme Court for federal pre-emption of state property law. It will also examine the Supreme Court's interpretation of the Railroad Retirement Act which led the Court to conclude that the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution and demanded federal pre-emption in this case. It will discuss the Hisquierdo test for federal pre-emption, which the Supreme Court has since used to override state community property systems. Finally, it will evaluate whether the case was correctly decided.
The Markala Cooperative: A New Approach To Traditional Economic Roles, Susan Daughman, Mariam N'Diaye Thiam
The Markala Cooperative: A New Approach To Traditional Economic Roles, Susan Daughman, Mariam N'Diaye Thiam
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS presents the Markala Cooperative, which resulted from the resolution of a group of poor women in rural Mali to seek paid employment. When the twenty original members joined together in 1975, their goals were to earn a regular salary and to learn marketable skills. By 1981, the women had established a successful cooperative business based on the production and sale of dyed cloth and laundry soap. The experience of the Markala women has already inspired other cooperative businesses in rural Mali, and it has also demonstrated that creating off-farm employment opportunities for women is a vital …
