I. Introduction. The University of Tsukuba opened its doors in October 1973 as a university of tomorrow with (1) the introduction of a new framework for education and research, (2) a novel university management, and (3) an open university as its three distinguishing features. During the preparatory stages for founding the university, plans were made to establish a computer center and introduce a large-scale computer. New ideas about romanization schemes seldom receive unanimous acceptance by librarians. What is tried and true always has strong adherents, while the proponents of new systems are as vehement in their partisanship, sometimes as automatically as are the traditionalists who cling to the status quo. Many academic collections of East Asian library material were begun less than two decades ago when the federal government enabled many universities to begin or augment educational programs in area studies. The collections acquired to serve these educational programs were subsidized with federal government monies and therefore grew fairly rapidly. The development of the East Asian collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) may be typical of many of the East Asian collections created in the early 1960's. Since this paper has concentrated on the cultural and societal influences on women's roles, and how these affect their criminal behavior, these variables rather than exclusively economic ones, will be presented now in relatively economic homogeneous contexts. The remaining discussion will, therefore, compare the patterns and trends of female criminal behavior in England-Wales and Japan with those in the United States. A final note will be made on some research done by Safilios-Rothschild in Greece concerning socio-cultural changes which have occurred in Greece, and how they have affected the commission of "honor crimes."

This paper defines authentic material and describes how the language teacher can find or produce it. The author describes an approach to teaching oral communication skills in three demonstration lessons based on his experience teaching in Japan. The author then analyzes the learning process making the point that in this approach learners learn both language and process, communication skills and the process of learning communication skills.
