An Investigation Of The Effect Of High Temperature On The Schumann-Runge Ultraviolet Absorption Continuum Of Oxygen, John Stanton Evans Dec 1959

An Investigation Of The Effect Of High Temperature On The Schumann-Runge Ultraviolet Absorption Continuum Of Oxygen, John Stanton Evans

Masters Theses

A theoretical and experimental investigation of the absorption coefficient of molecular oxygen at high temperature is reported here. The wavelength range covered is in the vacuum ultraviolet region from 1300 A to 1740 A. The theoretical treatment covers all temperatures from 300° to 10,000° K. The experimental investigation was carried out in the temperature range of 4,000° to 10,000° K. All values of the absorption coefficient found apply only to oxygen for which the vibrational degree of freedom is fully excited.

The final results for the high temperature absorption coefficient as a function of temperature and wavelength ...

Quantitative Standards For The Implementation Of Qualitative Standards In Student-Teaching Programs, Dan B. Cookie

Masters Theses

This study was selected because there was evidence that some defensible quantitative standards were needed to implement the desirable practices which would be consistent with the philosophies set forth in the standards of both the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the National Council for Accreditation or Teacher Education. Recognizing that the value or the student teaching experience depends to a large extent on the quality and the quantity of the types of experiences provided during student teaching, and the supervision or the program, the writer has identified two major purposes of the study as follows:

Backgrounds Of The Scopes Trial At Dayton, Tennessee, Warren Allem Aug 1959

Backgrounds Of The Scopes Trial At Dayton, Tennessee, Warren Allem

Masters Theses

This paper has been written in a sincere attempt to give a perception in depth to the scene of the famous trial. The history of the area has been studied, many of the leading characters have been interviewed personally, and a large amount of reading has been done in the records relating ot the events. Although greater emphasis has been placed upon those aspects of the case which were purely local, a number of larger factors contributing to its background and meaning have been presented briefly.

Tennecetin: A New Antifungal Antibiotic, James Burns Aug 1959

Tennecetin: A New Antifungal Antibiotic, James Burns

Masters Theses

The present investigation is an outgrowth of some speculations we have entertained (and vice versa) for a number of years. These speculations revolved around the general idea of antibiotics -- their discovery, production, uses, and significance.

Despite a keen fascination with the matter, our attempts to build a philosophy of antibiosis suffered from an awkward ignorance of the subject itself. There seemed to be no easy way to remedy this situation. In a field dominated by commercial interests, with a literature too recent and scattered to have been sifted and sorted, the traditional academic tools of learning did not appear, in ...

Lateral Development Following Special Pruning Practices On Peach Shoots, Tayis S. Hamid Jul 1959

Lateral Development Following Special Pruning Practices On Peach Shoots, Tayis S. Hamid

Masters Theses

[From the Introduction]

Because of its fruiting habit the peach creates a problem for growers. The problem is how to develop fruit wood nearer the trunk each year, so that propping, picking, spraying and fruit thinning will require about the same, rather than more labor each year.

The ever rising costs of production without the corresponding increases in retums have forced fruit growers to adopt time and labor saving devices in the production of their crop.

As a result of the above problem, this experiment was conducted to study and investigate the influence of some special pruning practices on one ...

The Relationship Of Behavioral Patterns Of Selected Superintendents To The Process Of Public School Desegregation, Harry Smith Blanton Jun 1959

The Relationship Of Behavioral Patterns Of Selected Superintendents To The Process Of Public School Desegregation, Harry Smith Blanton

Masters Theses

The problem in thi s study wa s to attempt to determine the results or effects on desegregation of varying behavioral patterns of school superintendents which developed when selected school systems attempted to bring about racially integrated school systems.

An important factor to be considered was the actions of various groups within the community and the effects these actions had on the shaping of the behavioral patterns of the superintendents. It was also necessary to look at various other issues which led up to and followed the desegregation issue in order to get a complete report of the behavioral patterns ...

Geology Of English Mountain And Vicinity, Cock, Jefferson And Sevier Counties, Tennessee, Robert Carl Greene Jun 1959

Geology Of English Mountain And Vicinity, Cock, Jefferson And Sevier Counties, Tennessee, Robert Carl Greene

Masters Theses

Statement of the Problem: English Mountain is interpreted by Rodgers (1953, Geologic Map of East Tennessee) as a remnant of rocks of the Chilhowee group, resting on a prong in the overthrust sheet of the Great Smoky fault. He showed the structure of the Chilhowee rocks to be synclinal in the central portion, monoclinal on the northern end, and monoclinal in the westward extension.

Objective of the present writer were: 1) to check the major structure and detail the contacts, 2) to accurately locate the position of the Great Smoky fault, 3) to map the minor structures, 4) to study ...

A Comparative Study Of The Experiential Characteristics Of A Group Of Alcoholic And Non-Alcoholic Subjects, Hugh C. Davis Jr. Jun 1959

A Comparative Study Of The Experiential Characteristics Of A Group Of Alcoholic And Non-Alcoholic Subjects, Hugh C. Davis Jr.

Masters Theses

The problem in this investigation is a behavioral comparison of a group of alcoholics and non-alcoholics. The primary purpose of these comparisons is to generate hypotheses about covariate factors related to alcoholism and secondly to gain understanding about the etiology of the alcoholic process. Three steps were involved in carrying out these purposes: (1) defining alcoholism behaviorally, (2) ascertaining current functioning of the subjects, (3) ascertaining early learning experiences. Alcoholism is the dependent variable--criterion--of this investigation. A quantifiable behavioral drinking scale developed by Jenkins and Davis (15) yielded scores which defined the criterion. The U-T Deprivation Scale was used to ...

Relation Of Certain Management Practices To Yields Of Tobacco In Bradley County, William M. Hale Mar 1959

Relation Of Certain Management Practices To Yields Of Tobacco In Bradley County, William M. Hale

Masters Theses

[From the Introduction]

This problem is a collateral study to one which has been completed on "The Relation of Soil Type and Certain Chemical Soil Tests to Yields of Tobacco in Bradley County" (2). Results of this study indicated a very strong positive correlation beween soil type and yield of tobacco. Nevertheless, the fact that so many low yields were produced on excellent and good soils pointed to a need for further study in an effort to account for some of these low yields on good soils. A study was thus made based on the following objective: to determine the ...

Characterization Of A Pigmented Yeast And Its Slime, Stephen Joseph Gagan Mar 1959

Characterization Of A Pigmented Yeast And Its Slime, Stephen Joseph Gagan

Masters Theses

Bacterial polysaccharides have received considerable attention because of their striking physical properties, their immunological reactions and their heterogeneity of composition and structure. The wide variety of these polysaccharides has been reviewed by Evans and Hibbert (1946).

More recently, surveys have been made of the sugar constituents of the polysaccharide fractions from a variety of fungi (Martin and Adams, 1956; Hough and Perry, 1955; Bernier, 1957; and Clutterbuck et al., 1934).

Little information, however, is available on polysaccharide slimes liberated by yeasts, a property confined almost entirely to certain members of the Cryptococcaceae.

The nature of this problem is concerned primarily ...
