An Ecological Model Of Academic Negative Prediction Defiance In College Students, Kelly L. Maltese Tsai
An Ecological Model Of Academic Negative Prediction Defiance In College Students, Kelly L. Maltese Tsai
Psychology Dissertations
Pathways to becoming a college student are as numbered and varied as college students themselves. For some people, the pathway to college is marked by barriers, such as negative messages received by the student regarding their abilities to attend college and/or the likelihood that they will get to attend college. On one hand, research suggests that children and adolescents internalize these negative messages, which then have the potential to block achievement in higher education. On the other hand, the general body of resilience research suggests that youth can overcome challenges and defy negative influences, as did the participants of the …
"Getting Better" After Torture From The Perspective Of The Survivor, Brian Louis Isakson
"Getting Better" After Torture From The Perspective Of The Survivor, Brian Louis Isakson
Psychology Dissertations
The traditional model of Western mental health treatment for survivors of torture has focused mainly on posttraumatic stress disorder and related conditions. This model is symptoms-focused in which the goal is to reduce pathology. In this model, the mental health professional is the expert and the survivors learn from the professionals. Using grounded theory methodology, the current study seeks to expand the understanding for treatment of torture survivors by investigating, from the perspective of the torture survivors, the process of “getting better” after torture. By asking the survivors to explain this process, this study broadens the focus of areas of …

Experiencing Higher Education In Louisiana Through A Native American Lens, Linda Kelly
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to capture the voice of the Louisiana Native American students who attend Louisiana institutions of higher education. Native Americans are the least represented minority in colleges. More have entered college in recent years, yet they continue to leave college at a high rate. It is important to understand what motivates Native students to attend college and what keeps them in college. When an understanding of their persistence is achieved, strategies can be implemented to assist others. Research questions that prompted inquiry relate to a Louisiana Native American perspective. All of the research questions ask …

Planting The Seeds Of Surreality, Cultivating The Dynamism Of A Nation: Winston Miranda And The Rhetoric Of Resilience In Post-Revolutionary Nicaraguan Art, Hiromi Holly Takahashi
Communication ETDs
Winston Miranda, a surrealist painter from the historic capital of Granada, Nicaragua, is creating a contemporary, post-revolutionary path that is distinct from yet informed by its revolutionary antecedents. In essence, his art is a literal and figurative bridge between war and healing. Critical research to date, however, has not considered the rhetorical implications of the role of art in Nicaragua after the revolutionary period (1990 to the present day). Henceforth, my thesis is a pentadic criticism of the post-revolutionary components of Mirandas surrealist oil paintings. By aggregating the literal and latent content of Miranda's artworks as a collective drama and …

Evaluation Of The Construct And Predictive Validity Of A Resiliency Matrix, Bobby R. Van Divner
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Following a comprehensive review of the literature, the present study undertook the development and evaluation of a Resiliency Matrix to assess for the presence of protective and vulnerability factors.
