Background: Resilience, well-being, and psychological empowerment are associated with improvement in job satisfaction and nurse retention rates. The Community Resiliency Model (CRM) can promote emotional regulation, well-being, and create an internal state of balance in response to work-related stressors. Educating nurses on how to use CRM enables the recognition of changes in thoughts, emotions, sensations, and internal or external stimuli, which can promote resilience, well-being, and psychological empowerment.

Problem: In the United States, one in three nurses experience symptoms of burnout, and doctoral nursing students are additionally challenged to juggle multiple school, work, and life demands (Reith, 2018; Woo et al., 2020). Latino children face multiple adversities and social determinants of health compounded by ACEs. Background: Nurse managers are at risk for experiencing stress and burnout. The peer support program was implemented to increase resilience among nurse managers.
Methods: A one-group pretest and posttest design was employed to examine the impact of peer support on nurse manager resilience. The nurse managers participated in bi-weekly 30-minute peer sessions over 12 weeks. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale was utilized prior to and following the intervention along with demographic and satisfaction surveys.

Despite the association between nursing students’ exposure to suffering and the development of compassion fatigue, little research exists regarding promoting nursing students’ adaptation to caring for suffering patients and families. As a possible nursing shortage is projected, it is imperative to better understand the factors that impact this adaptation to ensure that nursing students can successfully transition into their nursing role. COVID-19 accelerated the rate in which nurses were unable to maintain resilience and reduce burnout. This evidence-based DNP project obtained data from a therapeutic/expressive writing intervention and group resilience discussion with Women’s Care Center (WCC) nurses to improve resilience acuity and reduce symptoms associated with burnout syndrome. A review of previous studies indicated therapeutic/expressive writing and group resilience discussions have been beneficial in improving resilience and reducing burnout. The American Heart Association stresses the importance of structured debriefing as a continuous quality improvement strategy for patient care. Nurse managers experience high levels of stress due to the complex bureaucratic and chaotic nature of the job, which can lead to burnout. In nurse managers, burnout negatively impacts the ability to meet the strategic goals of the quadruple aim: patient quality, patient satisfaction, cost savings, and employee well-being. Strategies to address burnout include minimizing or removing unnecessary causes of stress and provide the skills to protect against burnout. Resilience is a competency nurse leaders must have to withstand overwhelming job-related stress. The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM), founded by Dr. James Gordon, provides communities with evidence-based Mind-Body Skills Groups (MBSGs) that foster self-care, self-awareness, and self-expression. MBSGs range from 8 to 12-week series on various mind-body practices wherein group members meet, practice, and reflect on the impact of mind-body skills in their lives. Research has demonstrated that participants in MBSGs have positive outcomes. Healthcare professionals (HCPs), especially nurses, gain resiliency from MBSGs. SN may be exposed to reports of trauma, a widespread and costly public health issue. This study sought to explore the experience of the SN when exposed to reports of trauma from those in their care. This scholarly work recognizes the profound impact of toxic stress on children as a result of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). According to the MDH (2011), ACEs are the main contributor to toxic stress within children. ACEs include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, mental illness of a household member, drug or drinking problems of a household member, divorce or separation of parents, domestic violence between adults in the household, and incarceration of a household member (MDH, 2011). The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between CF and resilience in LTC nurses. Watson’s caring theory was the theoretical foundation for the study. A survey containing demographic questions and items from the Professional Quality of Life Measure and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale survey was administered online to 111 LTC nurses from 10 states across the Eastern Seaboard. A simple linear regression analysis was performed to identify if there was an association between CF and resilience. The results indicated that the model was significant (p<.001). Results revealed an inverse relationship that with higher resilience scores, CF scores were lower and when CF was high, resilience was lower. The study may promote positive social change by highlighting the need for LTC facility managers to identify strategies that foster increased LTC nurse resilience such as improving work environments and developing programs that promote mental and emotional health of LTC nurses. Implementation of these strategies may reduce CF and promote nurse job retention and ultimately improve patient care. Recommendations for future research include quantitative studies to consider the effect of age, length of time in practice, and education level on resiliency and CF and qualitative studies on strategies for increasing resiliency among nurses in LTC facilities.

Nursing burnout is directly linked to patient outcomes, nurse retention, and the resilience of our nurses. A large healthcare organization’s 26-bed, medical-surgical, telemetry, COVID-19 overflow unit was significantly impacted. Many healthcare organizations have adopted advocacy for attaining joy in work as an extra dimension of the Institute for Health Improvement’s Triple Aim. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include 10 traumatic events of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction that occur before 18 years of age. Adverse childhood experiences affect greater than 60% of the population, and approximately one in six individuals affirm that they have experienced four or more types of ACEs.
