The increased appearance of intervenors at the Supreme Court of Canada has received much attention since the advent of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Political scientists have studied the quantitative increase in cases with intervenor presence, but have yet to take the next logical step. The next step is to analyse the influence of intervenors at the Supreme Court and this requires that a new method of data analysis be utilized. This paper traces the historical creation and development of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) as an advocate of the interests of small-medium sized business in Canada. The evolution of the CFIB is assessed from its inception as the Canadian Council on Fair Taxation to fight the 1969 White Paper on Taxation to its current position in the 1990's. Paul Pross's theory of institutionalization is used as a theoretical framework for analysing the development of the association. This thesis examines the concepts of direct democracy, which is defined as direct rule of the people, removing the necessity for elected representative. A review of the literature on the concepts shows that direct democracy enjoys broad appeal with writers such as Benjamin Barber, John Stewart Mill, Thomas Cronin and James Fishkin. Yet, it has been thought that direct democracy is not practical where the population, exceeds a few thousand, or is spread over a vast region. The following study examines the NDP and the union vote. The NDP and labour unions have been officially linked since the NDP's formation in 1961. Despite the initial optimism of the NDP-labour link, the change from the CCF to the NDP has resulted in limited electoral success, especially at the federal level. The partnership between labour and the NDP has met with limited electoral fortunes. Although their tendency to vote NDP is higher than that of other groups, the vast majority of union members still vote for other parties.
