Spain is a complex country divided into a number of contrasting regions with widely varying economic and social structures as well as different historical, political, and cultural traditions that includes different languages. This extreme complexity is related to its national diversity and also to the political and social articulation of nationalist claims within the state. This study arrives at five conclusions. The Icrc And Neutrality In Modern Civil And Ethnic Conflict (Red Cross)., Michelle Charmaine Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Neutrality is the primary focus of the thesis, for it is a controversial and complex issue which the ICRC places at the heart of its mandate of humanitarian activity. The controversy surrounding neutrality is not new. Since its inception in 1864, the ICRC has met with criticism concerning its neutral mandate. There has been a general loss of respect for the ICRC neutrality, particularly in cases of civil conflict. Honor Without Women: Honor And The Legitimization Of Murder In The Criminal Courts Of Lebanon., Randa Bassem. Serhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Honor crimes are the killing of women, and occasionally men for deviation from sexual norms and expectations. This phrase is an oxymoron which binds the notion of what is socially condoned, honor, with what is condemned and punished, a crime. The bulk of the data collected for this exploration is composed of investigative literature and Lebanese criminal court records. The court archives serve the purposes of displaying a discourse of honor in a controlled setting, and demonstrating the de facto handling of such crimes. Through examination of the transcripts of the 36 honor crimes tried in 1995, the boundaries of …

An Analysis Of Yasir Arafat's Media Image In "The New York Times" In The Pre- And Post-Handshake Periods (1988--1996)., Rosa M. Regula

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study asks if a change in Yasir Arafat's media image in The New York Times coincided with the signing of the first peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (P.L.O.). Evidence suggests that when American decision-makers modify their views on a particular character, they project this new position to the media, which in turn alters the American public's mental picture of the enemy through the newspaper's use of language. This paper examines how all three factors interconnect in the characterization of Arafat in The New York Times in the periods before and after the handshake. Chapter One …
