A Menace To Math: When Numbers Attack And Anxiety Strikes Back, Celycia Rogers
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In this Capstone Project, the researcher examined educators' perspectives on math anxiety and investigated their personal experiences with math to identify effective approaches for reducing math anxiety. Addressing math anxiety is essential to reduce the tension and fear individuals experience in math-related situations due to environmental factors and teaching methods. The primary stakeholder perspective obtained for this study was that of educators, as they have the most significant influence on student's math comprehension and emotional associations with the subject. Following interviews with participating educators and a review of relevant literature, three emergent themes were identified: making math fun, phasing out …
Parents' Experiences At A Mathematics Workshop Focused On K-2 Content, Abigail W. Wilkerson
Parents' Experiences At A Mathematics Workshop Focused On K-2 Content, Abigail W. Wilkerson
Honors College Theses
Parents’ beliefs towards math have been shown to impact their children’s academic achievement in the subject (Elliott & Bachman, 2018; Maloney et al., 2015). With the constant changing of math standards, the math taught in today’s schools may be different from the way parents were taught math. This change can lead to feelings of discomfort or nervousness when the subject is brought up. A parent workshop geared towards helping parents better understand the way math content is being taught can help them to feel more comfortable with math and more prepared to help their children. To help combat this issue, …
Addressing The Failures Of Modern Math Instruction: Insights From Classical Christian Education, Carol L. Reid
Addressing The Failures Of Modern Math Instruction: Insights From Classical Christian Education, Carol L. Reid
Master of Arts in Classical Studies
Following the Covid 19 pandemic, standardized mathematics test scores for American 4th and 8th graders plummeted dramatically. While many have been quick to blame the sudden and chaotic quarantine-mandated movement onto virtual platforms of learning, the history of American public education reveals a centuries-old struggle for math proficiency amid inconsistent attitudes about the relevance of math, appropriate objectives for math proficiency, and the mechanisms by which numeracy should be evaluated. From the mid-19th century, during what the author will refer to as the modern education era, objectives have endured constant recalibration as oscillating priorities have dictated math skill prioritization. The …

The Effects Of Isolated Affordances On Preschool Counting Improvement When Using A Digital Coloring App, Katherine Papazian
The Effects Of Isolated Affordances On Preschool Counting Improvement When Using A Digital Coloring App, Katherine Papazian
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Counting is an important preschool math skill that is necessary for building a strong foundation in mathematics. Previous research has demonstrated that guided counting activities can improve counting ability in preschoolers and that drawing on paper while learning can deepen processing, but research has not included digital drawing as a potential means of deepening processing while children count. This study developed a novel touch-screen app, which used a guided coloring activity to encourage effective counting skills and serve as a home numeracy tool that could be employed by all parents, including those with math anxiety. To evaluate the benefits of …
An Update On The Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale: Current Evidence Of Reliability, Edward Worden
An Update On The Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale: Current Evidence Of Reliability, Edward Worden
Master's Theses
The psychometric properties of the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS) are often reassessed not using the population for which it was developed. While the scale was initially created for US undergraduate students, research has focused on testing the reliability of the AMAS within other populations, often modifying and translating them for use with children or speakers of other languages. The “replication crisis” calls into question the reliability and reproducibility of findings from many disciplines, including the social sciences, so in order for researchers to have a high degree of confidence in their data and results, measurement tools must be periodically …

Increasing Introductory Biology Students' Modeling Mastery Through Visualizing Population Growth Models, Samantha Rae Wasson
Increasing Introductory Biology Students' Modeling Mastery Through Visualizing Population Growth Models, Samantha Rae Wasson
Theses and Dissertations
In introductory biology, college students are taught to predict how populations will grow and change over time by using population growth models. These models are commonly represented as mathematical equations. However, students consistently struggle when math and biology concepts intersect in the classroom, and these struggles lead to suboptimal understanding of how mathematical population models are designed and used. Education literature suggests that students may struggle with population modeling because of math anxiety, the high cognitive load of the task, and the lack of scaffolding for abstract concepts. In our study, we sought to improve student mastery modeling exponential growth, …
Using Sports To Develop Community In The Mathematics Classroom, Benjamin Lawson
Using Sports To Develop Community In The Mathematics Classroom, Benjamin Lawson

The Role Of Math Anxiety And Math Self-Efficacy Levels On High School Equivalency Student Math Performance, Barbara A. Clarke
The Role Of Math Anxiety And Math Self-Efficacy Levels On High School Equivalency Student Math Performance, Barbara A. Clarke
Doctor of Education Dissertations
One of the most predominant measures of a community’s appeal is the high school graduation rate. National “best places to live” ratings utilize educational statistics to rank the quality of life in a community (Morse & Brooks, 2020). Additionally, an individual’s future prospects depend on a high school credential (HSC) as the minimum needed for postsecondary academics or gainful employment. One hindrance high school equivalency (HSE) students encounter is the inability to perform math sufficiently to earn an HSC due to the affective state of math anxiety and reduced math self-efficacy, particularly under pressure on tests/assessments. This quantitative study, using …

The Role Of Numerical Processing And Working Memory Capacity On The Relationship Between Math Anxiety And Math Performance, Pilar Olid
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Math anxiety refers to a negative emotional response to math-related stimuli. Studies have found a negative correlation between math anxiety and math performance—as math anxiety increases, math performance decreases. According to Attentional Control Theory (Eysenck et al., 2007), anxiety impairs executive functions via depletion of working memory (WM) resources. Therefore, math anxiety affects math performance by consuming WM resources. Additionally, poor math performance is attributed to poor numerical processing (NP), which is the ability to estimate quantities. Recent research suggested that math anxiety affects arithmetic indirectly through working memory capacity (WMC) and NP, and that math anxiety affects numeracy—ratios, fractions, …

Honors Projects
Assessment plays a necessary role in the high school mathematics classroom, and testing is a major part of assessment. Students often struggle with mathematics tests and examinations due to math and test anxiety, a lack of student learning, and insufficient and inefficient student preparation. Practice tests, teacher-created review sheets, and student-created test sheets are ways in which teachers can help increase student performance, while ridding these detrimental factors. Student-created test sheets appear to be the most efficient strategy, and this research study examines the effects of their use in a high school mathematics classroom.
