A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Biofuels, Teresa Cristina Garcia Dec 2020

A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Biofuels, Teresa Cristina Garcia

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Brazil has the largest sugarcane acreage in the world (FAOSTAT, 2020) and is the world leader in the production of sugarcane-based ethanol (Sousa Junior et al., 2017). Due to the technical experience in the production of biofuels and the availability of sugarcane straw and bagasse, the country has a great potential to commercially produce second-generation ethanol (E2G) (Nyko et. al., 2010). In 2017, Brazil enacted a new National Biofuels Policy, called RenovaBio, to expand the production and use of biofuels in the country. This dissertation combines three essays that explore biofuels law and policy with a special focus on Brazil. …

Latino Suicide: Does Religious Contextual Influence Vary Between Latino Men And Latino Women?, Sierra L. Nelson Nov 2020

Latino Suicide: Does Religious Contextual Influence Vary Between Latino Men And Latino Women?, Sierra L. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have examined aggregate associations between religious contexts and suicide rates among religious denominations. Most early research examined this relationship among white Christians; more current research has examined black Christians. Though this research tradition was established by Emile Durkheim long ago, religious context’s relationship with suicide rates remains understudied among U.S. Latinos. Few studies examine suicide among this group; those that do compare U.S.-born and foreign-born Latinos (see Barranco 2016; Barranco and Harris 2019). Nevertheless, these studies overlook how the religious context—suicide rate relationship differs between U.S. Latino men and women. This study fills this gap by applying two competing …

Shakespeare And The Law: Analyzing Venetian Legal Context For The Merchant Of Venice, Catherine E. Carter May 2020

Shakespeare And The Law: Analyzing Venetian Legal Context For The Merchant Of Venice, Catherine E. Carter

Honors Capstones

William Shakespeare’s plays often involve legal systems, and comedic legal justice occurs most conspicuously and controversially in The Merchant of Venice. Studies of legal context for the play have focused on different branches of English law during Shakespeare’s lifetime. My project inquires further: to what degree did Shakespeare know about Venetian law and consider it when inventing this comedy? Act 4, Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice is one of the most obvious examples of Shakespeare’s impressive command and understanding of the law. While Shakespeare’s appreciation for the law has been noted by many scholars, the main question has …

An Analysis On Whether An Accounting Background Lays The Foundation For A Successful Transition Into Law School, Christopher M. Chimienti

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how an undergraduate degree in accountancy will assist in the study of law. To accomplish this, the paper looks at the course curriculum of a Northern Illinois University Accountancy major and the first year required courses in three law schools of varying rankings. Then, the skills and knowledge taught in each curriculum will be compared to see if there is any overlap. To supplement this analysis, I will host interviews with professional lawyers and law teachers who will give descriptions of the skills needed in everyday work. In addition to this analysis, …

Toward The Implementation Of Preventive Law In Community College Administration, Michael Joseph Heindl Aug 2011

Toward The Implementation Of Preventive Law In Community College Administration, Michael Joseph Heindl

Theses and Dissertations

As more students cross the threshold of higher education in Mississippi community and junior colleges, an increase in legal disputes inevitably will occur. Two important skills can help college administrators anticipate legal issues that may occur on their own campuses. The first is the ability of administrators to scan the broad legal environment. The second is their growing awareness of legal issues in all aspects of their own enterprise. In order to prevent causes of action from being initiated in a complaint, proceeding to discovery, and then possibly leading to trial, college administrators must recognize the importance of knowing what …

Children Giving Eyewitness Testmionies In A Court Of Law, Kaitlin Hargate Jan 2011

Children Giving Eyewitness Testmionies In A Court Of Law, Kaitlin Hargate

Honors Capstones

In a court of law, the issue of a child giving an eyewitness account has been debated among professionals. There is a significant amount of evidence suggesting that children are unable to give a reliable account. Their cognitive ability to perceive a questionable situation is not fully developed, and neither is their ability to recall memories. In order to examine the different variables surrounding this issue, a literature review was conducted. The results of numerous studies suggest that although children may not be the most reliable witnesses, sometimes they are the only witnesses. The following literature review discusses the conditions …

While it is commonly accepted and agreed upon that judges ought not to be partial, which (for reasons which will be discussed later) in the case of the judge necessarily implies corrupt, very seldom is there a reason given as to why the judge ought not to be partial to one litigant or the other. Perhaps this is because the judiciary is considered, as it was by the Founding Fathers, to be the weakest branch of government and therefore the least able to do harm, or perhaps it is because the answer to this question is considered too obvious and …
