Theses and Dissertations

Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus truncatus) in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) have experienced four Unusual Mortality Events (UMEs). This stock is considered immunocompromised and is routinely subjected to persistent anthropogenic stressors such as fishing gear entanglement, vessel strikes, contaminants, and harmful algal blooms. Previous body condition assessments of this stock have involved invasive capture-release examinations or subjective methods using lateral body images. To improve precision, we investigated the use of photogrammetry data collected from noninvasive unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) combined with models developed from capture-release data to estimate morphometric parameters and subsequently determine the body condition of …

However, the deployment of such swarms in an adversarial environment poses significant challenges. This work provides an overview of the current state of research on …

Employing Thermal Imagery From Small Unmanned Aerial Systems To Model The Energy Balance Of Urban Runoff, Gregory M. Dieter Oct 2023

Employing Thermal Imagery From Small Unmanned Aerial Systems To Model The Energy Balance Of Urban Runoff, Gregory M. Dieter

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The hydrologic urban heat island occurs when thermally polluted stormwater runoff is exported from hot urban centers to fragile downstream ecosystems. Mitigating runoff with higher temperatures requires an understanding of the relationship between land surface temperatures (LST) and stormwater runoff; however, LST is difficult to define due to the complexity of heterogenous urban catchments. Therefore, this thesis combines in-situ monitoring with thermal imaging via small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) to understand how urban catchment heterogeneity influences runoff temperature. Based upon this data, a framework for modeling heat flux in stormwater runoff using sUAS LST datasets is presented. Monitoring was conducted …

Coverage Problems In Rechargeable Iot Networks, Zilin Song Jan 2023

Coverage Problems In Rechargeable Iot Networks, Zilin Song

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

Coverage is required by various applications that leverage Internet of things (IoT) networks to monitor one or more targets. A specific coverage requirement could be to ensure all targets, e.g., the ingress/egress of a building, are monitored by a sensor node for the longest time period possible. Another requirement could be coverage quality, which relates to the number of samples collected by sensor devices. The coverage quality or lifetime of targets, however, is limited by the energy of sensor devices. This is because the operational time of fixed or mobile sensor nodes, e.g., unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), is a function …

Sustainable Sidedress Nitrogen Applications For Early Corn And Cotton Crops Using Small Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Nolan Parker Aug 2022

Sustainable Sidedress Nitrogen Applications For Early Corn And Cotton Crops Using Small Unmanned Aerial Systems, James Nolan Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen run-off from agriculture have been linked to human health problems on a global level. Large-scale conventional producers struggle to redefine themselves as sustainable because reducing nitrogen (N) inputs without justification or validation may lead to severe profit losses. Small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) sensing may allow for decreased N runoff. Failure to address this problem will exacerbate already excessive N runoff into the Mississippi River and beyond. The purpose of this study was to reduce fertilizer N input using sUAS technology to assess crop canopy needs. In 2020 and 2021, variable rate nitrogen (VRN) side-dress N application maps were …

Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) As A Tool For Investigating Edge Influences In New Hampshire Forests, Heather Marie Grybas

Doctoral Dissertations

The continued decline in forest cover across New England becomes more concerning when faced with the fact that these same forests may be playing an important role in the fight against climate change. New Hampshire, in particular, is experiencing a 0.27% annual net loss in forest cover as of 2018. Increased population growth and accompanied development has resulted in the removal of forest cover and the fragmentation of once continuous forest blocks. Fragmentation can lead to further degradation of the remaining forest stands via alterations of the biotic and abiotic process at their edges. The use of unmanned aerial systems …

Effects Of Aggressive Reed (Phragmites Australis) On Aquatic Communities In A Kansas Reservoir, Allison Pardis Jan 2022

Effects Of Aggressive Reed (Phragmites Australis) On Aquatic Communities In A Kansas Reservoir, Allison Pardis

Master's Theses

Phragmites australis is an Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) in Kansas, a non-native reed that threatens lake and river ecology, displaces desirable species, impedes movement of wildlife and humans, that can have detrimental economic effects on communities. The majority of Phragmites research is in brackish ecosystems and the effects of Phragmites in freshwater systems and especially on fishes is undocumented, even as many states and agencies invest substantial resources in management. As freshwater systems face a biodiversity crisis, prevention and control of invasive species is critical. Effective management therefore requires a thorough understanding of the effects these invaders have on ecosystems …

Persistent Stealthy Attacks And Their Detection In Large Distributed Cyber-Physical Systems, Simon Bech Thougaard Jan 2022

Persistent Stealthy Attacks And Their Detection In Large Distributed Cyber-Physical Systems, Simon Bech Thougaard

Doctoral Dissertations

"Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are increasingly targeted by attackers using a wide and evolving array of methods. When these systems are distributed, every node represents a potential vulnerability, and secure system design must take this into account. Distributed CPSs also have the potential to better detect and handle attacks, by leveraging redundancies of physical measurements between adjacent nodes. The main purpose of this research is to determine the conditions that render a distributed CPS more resistant to attacks, and the conditions that render it more vulnerable. The work is centered around two separate applications: The Smart Grid and Autonomous Drone Swarms. …

Extending Multi-Beam Sonar With Structure From Motion Data Of Shorelines For Complete Pool Bathymetry Of Reservoirs, Izaak Brandt Cooper Oct 2021

Extending Multi-Beam Sonar With Structure From Motion Data Of Shorelines For Complete Pool Bathymetry Of Reservoirs, Izaak Brandt Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

Bathymetric mapping is an important tool for reservoir management, typically completed before reservoir construction. Historically, bathymetric maps were produced by interpolating between points measured at a relatively large spacing throughout a reservoir, typically on the order of a few, up to 10, meters or more depending on the size of the reservoir. These measurements were made using traditional survey methods before the reservoir was filled, or using sonar surveys after filling. Post-construction issues such as sedimentation and erosion can change a reservoir, but generating updated bathymetric maps is difficult as the areas of interest are typically in the sediment deltas …

Small-Target Detection And Observation With Vision-Enabled Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Hayden Matthew Morgan May 2021

Small-Target Detection And Observation With Vision-Enabled Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Hayden Matthew Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on vision-based detection and observation of small, slow-moving targets using a gimballed fixed-wing unmanned aircraft system (UAS). Generally, visual tracking algorithms are tuned to detect motion of relatively large objects in the scene with noticeably significant motion; therefore, applications such as high-altitude visual searches for human motion often ignore target motion as noise. Furthermore, after a target is identified, arbitrary maneuvers for transitioning to overhead orbits for better observation may result in temporary or permanent loss of target visibility. We present guidelines for tuning parameters of the Visual Multiple Target Tracking (Visual MTT) algorithm to enhance its …
