Colonial Legacies In Morocco’S Urban Spaces: Policies Of Modernization And Preservation, Christina Gnedash

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Globalization has touched Morocco through the historical process of colonization. Though the colonizer has left, a relationship remains and Morocco like many other countries is far too entangled in the global system of economics and politics to withdrawal. The restructuring of urban spaces and the preservation of cultural and historical sites have contributed to the country’s economic dependence on and the expansion of the tourist industry at the expense of local communities and certain industries. Culture has become a commodity that is profitable and thus countries besides Morocco continue to present an inauthentic and static experience for visitors that perpetuates …

Implementing The Hmong Culture Into Classrooms, Chee Vang

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this capstone was to raise awareness of the importance of implementing the Hmong culture into classrooms, especially due to many Hmong students’ lack of academic performance in schools. Hmong students have suffered tremendously in school due to language barriers and culture shock. The research involved interviewing a sample of Fresno County teachers and students. Fresno has the largest population of Hmong people in California. The results suggest that creating a diverse and comfortable environment for Hmong students requires incorporating their culture into classrooms by using icebreakers or teaching a whole unit about the Hmong people. Multiculturalism & Multicultural Education : Where Do Minority Teachers Teaching Minorities Fit?, Jessica Salas

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Upon the abundance of literature pertaining to multiculturalism and multicultural education, there appeared to be a large gap in the research: how do minority teachers teach minority students when in reality, they are both the majority? Key elements for the study consisted of teacher surveys and one-on-one interviews with both students and teachers. Ultimately, a research report filled with the analyzed data was created and presented …

Film And Its Influence On The Public Perception Of Motorcycle Culture, Solomon Kamman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

My capstone research project deals with the film industry and how it has influenced the public's perception of the motorcycle culture. In my paper I argue that the biker culture has been grossly misunderstood due to films such as "The Wild One," and "Easy Rider." Through exploitation, as well as the use of specific cultural influence, these movies were greatly effective in creating an image of the biker culture that created fear and hatred towards a misunderstood group. In order to show the reality behind the motorcycle culture, I explore the contemporary demographics of the riders.

Parental Empowerment Through Involvement : Presented To ..., Anneliese Neitling

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of my research was to investigate the effect of an adaptation of a parent involvement program model for the families and students in the middle school. By means of the parent involvement program, my goal was to assess and improve the relationship between the school and parents. Crossing the bridge between different cultures and closing the gap for minority-low socio economic families presents yet another challenge for schools. Therefore, increasing parent involvement can be problematic for educators and administrators who work with disadvantaged families. Given the need for an increased amount of parent involvement, I decided to create …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In this action research project the author employed a qualitative, case study approach to interview seven parents/guardians of extreme language minority students who attended the elementary school at which he worked. Both professional and popular literature are reviewed in the relevant areas: language diversity and policies, demographic trends in the U.S., relative effectiveness of language programs in schools, transfer of skills from L1 to L2, culture's effects on learning, comparative learning styles, SES's effects on …
