Effects Of Bonding Pressure And Lamina Thickness On Mechanical Properties Of Clt Composed Of Southern Yellow Pine, Cody S. Bates Dec 2021

Effects Of Bonding Pressure And Lamina Thickness On Mechanical Properties Of Clt Composed Of Southern Yellow Pine, Cody S. Bates

Theses and Dissertations

This study produced cross-laminated timber panels at a range of four lamina thickness (5/8, 1, 1 1/8, and 1 1/4 inch) and three bonding pressures (50, 125, 200 psi), producing a total of 12 panels for mechanical testing. The goal of this study is to observe how the thickness and pressure trends affect the mechanical properties of CLT. Tests include flatwise bending, flatwise shear, internal-bond, and delamination. Results showed that bending MOE decreases as the panel thickness increases while bonding pressure had no significance. Bending MOR was less significant for the thickness and more significant for pressure compared to the …

Numerical Simulation Of Losses In Four-Way Pipe Junctions, Simon Barth May 2021

Numerical Simulation Of Losses In Four-Way Pipe Junctions, Simon Barth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To design pipelines, engineers need to know how much energy the fluid in the pipe has at different locations in the pipe network. The energy the fluid has comes in the form of pressure, velocity, and elevation. As fluid travels through a pipe, it loses energy for many different reasons. Some of those reasons include friction between the fluid and the pipe wall, shear forces within the fluid, changes in flow direction, changes in elevation, or various pipe fittings like elbows, tee’s, valves, reducers, and expanders. Many of the causes of energy loss are well researched. One cause of energy …

The Mediation Of The Cross: Spatiality And Syncretism In Pedro Páramo And Grande Sertão: Veredas, Faith Arianna Blackhurst Jun 2019

The Mediation Of The Cross: Spatiality And Syncretism In Pedro Páramo And Grande Sertão: Veredas, Faith Arianna Blackhurst

Theses and Dissertations

Juan Rulfo and João Guimarães Rosa stand at a literary crossroads, the intersection where traditional regionalists and celebrated Boom-era novelists meet. Although Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa chose the Mexican Llano Grande and the Brazilian sertão of Minas Gerais as the settings of their most celebrated novels, they go far beyond the techniques of traditional regionalism by distancing themselves from their national literatures. They universalize their narratives by incorporating universal religious themes, including the symbol of the cross. The symbol of the cross/crossroad has been analyzed and alluded to in a handful of essays on Pedro Páramo and Grande sertão: Veredas …

“‘Bere We Þe Cros’: The Persistence Of The Cross In English Ritual And Religious Practices From Bede To The Reformation”, David Black May 2018

“‘Bere We Þe Cros’: The Persistence Of The Cross In English Ritual And Religious Practices From Bede To The Reformation”, David Black

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Long before Christian missionaries arrived in England in the 7th century, the pagan population recognized the cross as a potent magical symbol. As a result, proselytizers shrewdly used the population’s familiarity with the cross, and their understandings of its power, to encourage converts to the new religion. Over the ensuing centuries of English Christian dominance, the magical aspects of the cross continued to develop both mythologically and theologically, without ever losing connection to their pagan origins. The Crusades, both through the propaganda of preachers and the massive influx of True Cross Relics, contributed in a substantial way to new …

Rising Above The Faithful: Monumental Ceiling Crosses In Byzantine Cappadocia, Alice Lynn Mcmichael May 2018

Rising Above The Faithful: Monumental Ceiling Crosses In Byzantine Cappadocia, Alice Lynn Mcmichael

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The design of Byzantine architecture created viewing conditions that reveal social and spatial contexts of Christian ritual, private devotion, and expressions of identity. This is apparent in the decoration of ceilings, which were crucial visual elements within spatial relationships in late antique and medieval architecture but are rarely discussed because few examples survive. However, Byzantine Cappadocia, a region that is now central Turkey, has a high number of extant medieval ceilings in its rock-cut architecture. About eighty monuments there have monumental ceiling crosses that were painted or carved in relief between the sixth and eleventh centuries. In this dissertation the …

Mercy Vs. Justice - Blood Of The Lamb, Ryan Murphy Apr 2018

Mercy Vs. Justice - Blood Of The Lamb, Ryan Murphy

Honors Projects

How did Christ's death save us? The Atonement is a Christian doctrine which has been heavily debated in how it should be understood since the beginnings of Christianity. This analysis covers the theological theories of the Atonement, narrates a Catholic layman's personal understanding that is based on scholarly research and is kept within the bounds of Catholic doctrine, and summarizes the thoughts and feelings of surveyed college-age Christians on the subject.

My Blood Of The (New) Covenant: An Assessment Of René Girard's Soteriology In Light Of The Covenantal Milieu Of The Last Supper Sayings, Benjamin Burkholder Jan 2015

My Blood Of The (New) Covenant: An Assessment Of René Girard's Soteriology In Light Of The Covenantal Milieu Of The Last Supper Sayings, Benjamin Burkholder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study assesses René Girard's claims regarding the Gospels' understanding of Jesus' death. Though Girard contends that the Gospels never depict Jesus' death as an atonement for sin, there are significant passages that Girard avoids discussing like the Last Supper sayings in the Synoptic Gospels. This dissertation investigates whether these central passages, along with other supporting texts in the Synoptics, jeopardize the viability of Girard's assertions, especially when they are read in light of restoration theology.

The core components of Girard's thought, his reading of salvation history, and the ways in which Girard's followers have adapted his thought are adumbrated …

Shaped By The Spirit: Spirit Christology As A Framework For Preaching Sanctification, Jonathan Rusnak Apr 2014

Shaped By The Spirit: Spirit Christology As A Framework For Preaching Sanctification, Jonathan Rusnak

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Rusnak, Jonathan W. "Shaped by the Spirit: Spirit Christology as a Framework for Preaching Sanctification." S.T.M. Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2014. 128 pp.

This thesis offers an account of preaching sanctification grounded broadly in the trinitarian economy of salvation and specifically in the person and work of Jesus Christ as receiver, bearer, and giver of the Holy Spirit. Grounded in atonement theory alone, other accounts of preaching sanctification are unable to address any number of concerns that arise in the sanctified life. In addition, atonement theory alone does not ground an account of preaching sanctification that maintains the nexus indivulsus of …

Salvation Triptych, Jeremy Bakken Sep 2013

Salvation Triptych, Jeremy Bakken

Music ETDs

Salvation Triptych is a three movement composition for choir, winds, strings, and percussion. The texts include the traditional Kyrie and two Christian texts from the 4th-5th Centuries: The Word of the Cross by Paulinus of Nola (trans. Helen Waddell) and two stanzas from a hymn by Ambrose of Milan. Movement I: Kyrie involves the greatest musical forces (SATB choir, flute, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass, timpani, gong, chimes, and wood block). Due to the brevity of the text, the choir entries are relatively short and temporally separated, allowing this longest of the movements to …

Silence, Word And The Loneliness Of Love: Kenotic Silence In The Dramatic Soteriology Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Jacqueline K. Marr Jan 2010

Silence, Word And The Loneliness Of Love: Kenotic Silence In The Dramatic Soteriology Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Jacqueline K. Marr

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between divine silence and the Word within the theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar. The idea of a kenotic distancing silence is discussed within the dialogic relations between the Father and his Word and traced from utterance in the immanent Trinity, through sending in the economy of salvation, to dying and descent into hell in the cross event. It is proposed that this distancing silence is part of the Father's generation of the Son to be his dialogue partner and, furthermore, may be seen continuing in the economy of salvation as part of God's offer …

Suffering And The Search For Wholeness: Beauty And The Cross In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Contemporary Feminist Theologies, Elisabeth T. Vasko Jan 2009

Suffering And The Search For Wholeness: Beauty And The Cross In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Contemporary Feminist Theologies, Elisabeth T. Vasko

Dissertations

The tension between the beauty of the cross and the violence of the crucifixion creates a dissonance within Christian theology. In terms of atonement theologies, this dissonance has been interpreted through the development of a converted sense of beauty in which the cross, as perceived and interpreted by the believer in the context of faith, expands Christian aesthetics. One of the more prominent examples of this construction can be found in the theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, wherein divine beauty culminates in Christ's kenotic self-surrender at the cross. In a feminist hermeneutic, the identification of divine beauty with crucified …

Neutron Cross-Section Sensitivity Studies In Higher Actinides For Criticality Safety In Reprocessing, Lawrence J Lakeotes Jan 2008

Neutron Cross-Section Sensitivity Studies In Higher Actinides For Criticality Safety In Reprocessing, Lawrence J Lakeotes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During reprocessing, the spent fuel rod can be divided up into its component parts for separation into different waste streams. These radioactive streams are then directed appropriately toward low-level waste (LLW) storage, high-level waste (HLW) storage, or reuse into a recycled fuel pin. [1]; The issue that requires evaluation is the nuclear reaction of the higher actinides in reprocessing in an aqueous solution with regard to small temperature changes. This will need an analysis of neutron cross section, which is the measure of the probability that a nuclear reaction will occur; The isotopes' cross sections need to be temperature corrected. …

Quantum Mechanical Hydrogen-Hydrogen Collisional Cross Section Calculation For Astrophysics, David Michael Archer Jan 2006

Quantum Mechanical Hydrogen-Hydrogen Collisional Cross Section Calculation For Astrophysics, David Michael Archer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to perform a quantum mechanical calculation of the collisional state-to-state cross sections for H-H2 required for astrophysical modeling. Previous quantum and semi-classical cooling rates computed from cross sections have shown unexplained discrepancies. This attempts to clarify the situation and provide reliable cross sections to the astrophysical community. As a side benefit of this calculation geometric phase effects in the H-H2 collision dynamics are investigated at higher energies than previously attempted. Cooling is critical to the formation of the first objects formed in the early universe, and other diverse phenomenon of interest to astrophysics. For …

Dna-Protein Cross-Linking By Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Gail L. Drew May 1997

Dna-Protein Cross-Linking By Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Gail L. Drew

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are natural plant compounds found in hundreds of plant species worldwide and are reported to have cytotoxic, carcinogenic, antimitotic, and genotoxic activity. PAs are metabolized by the cytochrome P450 (CYP) system to the pyrrole or the N-oxide form. The pyrroles are bifunctional electrophilic alkylators that bind cellular nucleophiles such as DNA and proteins and sirupt normal cell processes, including DNA replication and gene transcription and can cause megalocytosis. The pyrroles dehydrosenecionine (DHSN) and dehydromonocrotaline (DHMO) are among the most potent PA cross-linkers and inducers of megalocytosis. DHSN and DHMO-induced cross-links in cultured normal (MDBK) and neoplastic (MCF7) …

Charge-Transfer Cross Section Measurements Using Laser Ablation Ion Source And Reflection Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer, Jiebing Wang Jan 1996

Charge-Transfer Cross Section Measurements Using Laser Ablation Ion Source And Reflection Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer, Jiebing Wang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A new method is developed that combines the production of ions by laser ablation with a reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (RTOFMS) for charge-transfer cross section measurements. This method allows a specific charge-transfer channel of an ion-neutral pair to be measured at energies of about 0.1 KeV/amu. The charge-transfer cross section is determined by measuring the intensity ratio of the product ions to the parent ions after the charge-transfer reactions occur in the reflection drift tube of the RTOFMS. First, a calibration measurement of C{dollar}\sp{2+}{dollar} with H{dollar}\sb2{dollar} is carried out and the result agrees with previous measurements by other research groups. …

Cross-Validation With Learning-Disabled Students Of The Abbreviated Halstead-Reitan Battery For Older Children, Paul G Webb Jan 1986

Cross-Validation With Learning-Disabled Students Of The Abbreviated Halstead-Reitan Battery For Older Children, Paul G Webb

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The present study attempted to cross-validate a screening battery developed by Reitan and Herring (1985) from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery for Children. Twenty-eight average (AC) 9-11 year olds were compared to 28 learning disabled (LD) students of similar age and IQ using the Reitan and Herring (1985) screening battery, with the addition of two tactile-perceptual tests--Tactile Finger Recognition (TFR) and Finger-Tip Number Writing Perception (FTWP). The Screening Index score discriminated significantly (p {dollar}<{dollar}.0005) between the LD and AC groups. The mean Screening Index score of the LD group (.23) was over twice as high as the AC group's mean score (.10), with an overall classification rate of 76% (90% for ACs, 62% for LDs). Converted scores (impairment ratings) of the individual measures (7) in the screening battery revealed only three statistically significant differences between the groups (p {dollar}<{dollar}.05); however, only 24% or less of the LD subjects earned converted scores within the impaired range on these three measure suggesting little practical diagnostic differentation between the groups using Selz and Reitan's (1979) impairment levels for the individual measures for LD classification. The tactile-perceptual tests were better discriminators between the groups with all but one statistical comparison reaching significance, both for raw and converted score means. Total Error and Right Hand Error mean scores were the most discriminating measures, and of the two tactile-perceptual tests, FTWP was the better discriminator between groups. The Aphasia Screening Test of the screening battery provided maximum separation between the groups classifying 95% of the subjects overall--100% of the ACs and 90% of the LDs; Results of this study support the use of Reitan and Herring's (1985) screening battery with 9-11 year olds as a screening instrument for disabilities from diagnosed or suspected CNS dysfunction, e.g., learning disability. The screen battery is clearly enhanced for LD screening with the inclusion of both tactile-perceptual measures--TFR and FTWP. The AST appears to offer the greatest diagnostic power for 9-11 year old LDs.

The Nature And Significance Of Christ's Death As Reflected In Selected General And Pauline Epistles, Masao Shimodate May 1985

The Nature And Significance Of Christ's Death As Reflected In Selected General And Pauline Epistles, Masao Shimodate

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The death of Christ as the saving event was also the basis for Paul’s teaching on the sacraments. In the present study our interest is in the Lord's Supper rather than Baptism. Chapters 10: and: 11 of First Corinthians indicate what it was that Paul was particularly concerned about in this matter. These two chapters are the only places in which the Lord’s Supper is mentioned in the Pauline epistles.

A Study Of The Cross, Harold Krueger Jun 1950

A Study Of The Cross, Harold Krueger

Bachelor of Divinity

The scope of this thesis is: to give to the reader a clearer picture and understanding of that most sacred symbol, the cross. The history of the cross both before and after Christ will be considered first; the more important types of the cross will then be examined, and finally thought will be given to its liturgical use.

Inheritance Of Resistance To Six Races Of Bunt, To Awns And Kernel Color In A Wheat Cross, Marr D. Simons May 1950

Inheritance Of Resistance To Six Races Of Bunt, To Awns And Kernel Color In A Wheat Cross, Marr D. Simons

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wheat is the most important cereal crop of the world, and one of the most serious diseases affecting it over much of its range is covered smut or bunt (57). The word "bunt", according to Heald (48), is a contraction of an old English term, "burnt ear", which fittingly describes the ravages of covered smut.

Man's first knowledge of this disease is lost in antiquity, but it was first recorded by early Greek writers (97). Gaines (39), writing in 1928, stated that since 1924 stinking smut had been the most destructive parasite of wheat in America, causing losses of as …
