The Relationship Between Young Adult Suicidal Behavior And Difficulties Developing Intimacy, Problematic Family Relationships And Depression., Michael Edward Anthony. Oosterhoff Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Young Adult Suicidal Behavior And Difficulties Developing Intimacy, Problematic Family Relationships And Depression., Michael Edward Anthony. Oosterhoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Suicidal Behavior is an increasingly common problem that occurs with young adults. While there has been considerable research in this area there has been little detailed examination of the relationship of suicidal behavior with the salient developmental issues of young adulthood. A primary developmental issue facing young adults is the establishment of intimacy in interpersonal relationships. The establishment of intimacy is necessarily relational in nature and therefore the patterns of intimate relating exposed to while growing up likely have a significant effect on the later success in developing intimacy with others. Of the patterns of intimate interpersonal relating exposed to …

Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease: A Look At The First Ten Years Of Cerad Data., Nancy Justina. Fisher Jan 1998

Neuropsychological Subgroups Of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease: A Look At The First Ten Years Of Cerad Data., Nancy Justina. Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neuropsychological CERAD data from 960 patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 465 non-demented controls were examined, to investigate whether previously identified subgroups of patients could be replicated (i.e., externally validated) in this sample, and if so, whether these subgroups were specific to AD. Patient and comparison group data were subjected to separate Q-factor and cluster analytic procedures. Consistent with past research, three qualitatively distinct patient subgroups were reliably identified across classification methods: Subgroup 1 (LAD; n = 312) was characterized by severe naming impairment yet border normal figure copying skills; Subgroup 2 (LAD; n = 247) displayed average …

Gender Role Socialized Behaviours And Attitudes As Predictors Of Eating Pathology In An Undergraduate Female Sample., Jeremy. Frank Jan 1998

Gender Role Socialized Behaviours And Attitudes As Predictors Of Eating Pathology In An Undergraduate Female Sample., Jeremy. Frank

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gender role-socialization models posit that the higher prevalence rates of problematic eating patterns in girls and women are partly due to a socialization process whereby women are taught to view themselves in relation to others, to avoid confrontation, and to conform to societal ideals regarding beauty and thinness. In the current study, 236 undergraduate women completed measures of body dissatisfaction, externalized self-perceptions, weight status, perceived importance of their shape and weight, eating symptomatology, depression, and self-silencing behaviours and attitudes. Pearson product moment correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression analyses were computed to investigate the relationships between variables representing body dissatisfaction, gender …

Adolescent Problem Behaviours Associated With Parental Divorce, Interparental Conflict, And Parent-Child Relationships., Cheryl Robyn. Lavitch Jan 1998

Adolescent Problem Behaviours Associated With Parental Divorce, Interparental Conflict, And Parent-Child Relationships., Cheryl Robyn. Lavitch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to identify several variables (Parental Marital status, interparental conflict, parent-child relationships) related to the divorce process and the association that these variables have on adolescent problem behaviours (sexual activity, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking). Students (N = 2,087) from all high schools across Windsor and Essex county were included in this study. The age of the participants ranged from 14 year olds or younger to 18 year olds or older, with slightly more females (n = 1125) than males (n = 976) participating in this study. The participants completed a "Teen Health Centre Survey", …

An Examination Of Social Information Processing Patterns In Anxious Children., Catherine Anne-Marie. Bulow Jan 1998

An Examination Of Social Information Processing Patterns In Anxious Children., Catherine Anne-Marie. Bulow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined social information processing patterns in trait and socially anxious children using Dodge's Social Information Processing model (Dodge, 1986; Crick & Dodge, 1994). Based upon the current research (e.g., Bell-Dolan, 1995) and cognitive theories of anxiety (e.g., Beck, 1986), it was hypothesized that children reporting high levels of trait or social anxiety would demonstrate maladaptive social information processing patterns. Specifically, it was expected that anxious children, compared with non-anxious children, would focus more on hostile cues, make more negative attributions, and endorse more passive behaviours. Several levels of Dodge's model were considered including cue encoding, cue interpretation, …

Relations Of Autonomy And Sociotropy To Eating Disturbances In Female University Students And Women With Eating Disorders., Karen Joan. Narduzzi Jan 1998

Relations Of Autonomy And Sociotropy To Eating Disturbances In Female University Students And Women With Eating Disorders., Karen Joan. Narduzzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation assessed relations between personality factors and eating disordered attitudes and behaviours. Specifically, the study evaluated the degree of association between varying levels of eating disorders and the dimensions of Autonomy and Sociotropy, two personality traits suggested by past research to be linked with both depression and eating disorders. Autonomy measures a heightened focus on issues of self-definition and self-worth, whereas Sociotropy measures excessive investment in maintaining interpersonal relationships. This study utilized these measures, along with a projective test to evaluate a psychodynamic model of eating disorders. The model postulates that eating disturbances arise from an underlying anaclitic …

Neuropsychological And Socioemotional Sequelae Of Infantile Hydrocephalus In Three Etiological Groups: A Developmental Perspective., Simone W. A. T. Kortstee Jan 1998

Neuropsychological And Socioemotional Sequelae Of Infantile Hydrocephalus In Three Etiological Groups: A Developmental Perspective., Simone W. A. T. Kortstee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a group of 46 children, early shunted for hydrocephalus, were examined with regard to the development of their neuropsychological and socioemotional functioning. The purpose of this study was to test the model of Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD; Rourke, 1989, 1995), by studying a clinical group of children with assumed early cerebral white matter damage or dysfunction. As the NLD model predicts a specific course of development, children of two age groups (5--8 yrs (n = 23) and 9--14 yrs (n = 23)) were included in the study. A second purpose of the study was to investigate the …

The Development Of A Comprehensive Factor Analytically Derived Measure Of Spirituality And Its Relationship To Psychological Functioning., Douglas Andrew. Macdonald Jan 1998

The Development Of A Comprehensive Factor Analytically Derived Measure Of Spirituality And Its Relationship To Psychological Functioning., Douglas Andrew. Macdonald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was threefold and consisted of (a) developing a comprehensive and scientifically meaningful definition of spirituality, (b) constructing and validating a psychometric assessment instrument designed to tap the devised definition of spirituality and (c) examining the relation of spirituality to personality and psychopathology. Using a two stage methodology, the study first examined the emergent factors from a principal axis factor analysis of 11 measures of spiritual constructs with data obtained from 534 undergraduate students. Four stable factors and two less consistent ones, were found and labelled, Cognitive-Affective Orientation, Experiential/Phenomenological Dimension, Religiosity, Paranormal Beliefs, Existential Well-Being, Products …

Maternal Perceptions Of Support From Professionals And Daily Care-Giving Burden As Determinants Of Distress In Mothers Of Children With Developmental Disabilities., Lena Janine. Freeman Jan 1998

Maternal Perceptions Of Support From Professionals And Daily Care-Giving Burden As Determinants Of Distress In Mothers Of Children With Developmental Disabilities., Lena Janine. Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated whether the current movement toward family-centred health care service delivery effectively addresses the distress associated with the daily care-giving burden experienced by mothers of children with developmental disabilities. Participants were 37 mothers of children with developmental disabilities who are limited in their ability to perform daily activities independently. Participants were contacted by mail through the Children's Rehabilitation Centre (CRC). Participants provided demographic information and completed self-report questionnaires measuring maternal distress (i.e., Malaise Inventory, Mental Health Inventory) and perceptions of parent-professional interactions (i.e., Enabling Practices Scale). The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Classroom Edition was completed by teachers or …
