Predicting The Psychosocial Outcome Of Traumatic Brain-Injured Adults., Andree. Tellier Jan 1990

Predicting The Psychosocial Outcome Of Traumatic Brain-Injured Adults., Andree. Tellier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The serious nature of the psychosocial maladjustment of many traumatic brain-injured (TBI) patients has led researchers to attempt to predict the eventual level of recovery of these patients. The ability to predict the psychosocial adjustment would be invaluable for several reasons: it would allow professionals to provide patients with more accurate information concerning their likely level of recovery and also bring their family's expectations to realistic levels; it could also help professionals identify sooner patients in greatest need of counseling. Numerous studies have demonstrated the predictive superiority of neuropsychological variables over that of the initial indices of severity such as …

Long-Term Psychosocial Outcome After Severe Closed Head Injury: A Controlled Study., Chris. Paniak Jan 1990

Long-Term Psychosocial Outcome After Severe Closed Head Injury: A Controlled Study., Chris. Paniak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychosocial functioning was examined in 57 severely head injured patients at least two years after the termination of post-traumatic amnesia. A group of 50 nonbrain-damaged spinal cord injured patients matched on age, education, sex, premorbid socioeconomic status, and marital status served as controls. Results on the Katz Adjustment Scale - Relative's Form indicated that only some of the difficulties commonly reported after closed head injury are more frequent with head injury than with spinal cord injury. Results on the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale - Self-Report form suggested that the head injured patients minimized many of their difficulties. Head injured …

This research focused on the parental stress and the coping of mothers with a son who is trainable mentally retarded and living in the home (n = 18, Group DD). These mothers were compared to a normative group of mothers (n = 12, Group NM) and a group of mothers with sons in treatment for behavior problems (n = 10, Group BP). All of the mothers had a son between the ages of 6 and 12. The groups were compared on the factors comprising McCubbin and Patterson's (1981) Double ABCX Model of Family Adjustment and Adaptation (e.g. stressors, resources, perception …

Purpose In Life, Depression, And Outcome Of Treatment For Alcohol Dependence., Jodie L. Waisberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of studies have linked the development of substance abuse problems to a lack of purpose or meaning in life, and a few studies have demonstrated an increase in sense of life purpose through substance abuse treatment programs. The present study extended past research by examining the relationship of purpose in life to treatment outcome assessed three months post-treatment, and by examining the relationship between depression and sense of purpose in life. One hundred and forty-six people in inpatient treatment programs or awaiting treatment for alcoholism (in some cases in addition to other drug addictions) comprised the subject sample. …

Bulimia: A Systems/Communications Critical Methodological Analysis., Richard J. Holigrocki Jan 1990

Bulimia: A Systems/Communications Critical Methodological Analysis., Richard J. Holigrocki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intent of the research is to present a critical methodological analysis of the clinical phenomenon referred to as bulimia. Specifically, the project is a theoretical analysis of bulimia from the Systems/Communications (S/C) perspective. It is termed a "critical" analysis because it constitutes an ongoing critical (self-reflective) commentary on a topic. In practical terms, the present methodological approach has two aspects. The first is the utilization of the S/C model or framework to provide a "reasonable" and coherent "explanation" of many of the clinical phenomena associated with bulimia. In practice this means selecting excerpts from a series of nine recorded …

The Rules Of Parent Care: Adult Children And Their Aging Parents., Olga W. Malott Jan 1990

The Rules Of Parent Care: Adult Children And Their Aging Parents., Olga W. Malott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An ethogenic approach that started with accounts provided by adult children of aging parents, was used to identify social rules. Two groups of subjects, 170 adults who were care providers, and 150 university students participated. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 caregivers to obtain accounts of parent care experiences. Out of 241 embedded statements, 65 rule-like statements were identified. Subjects rated the importance of the 65 statements with reference to one of ten parent care vignettes designed to tap situational factors. A set of 15 general social rules of parent care were identified by the sample of adult children, while …
