The Association Between Premenstrual Changes And Neurotic Personality Traits And Neurotic Disorders: Fact Or Artifact Of Inadequate Method?, Elaine Marie. Lesonsky Jan 1988

The Association Between Premenstrual Changes And Neurotic Personality Traits And Neurotic Disorders: Fact Or Artifact Of Inadequate Method?, Elaine Marie. Lesonsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arguing that two related assumptions frequently made in studies of premenstrual changes--the assumption that premenstrual changes are related to neurotic personality traits and the assumption that premenstrual changes are related to affective disorders--are mistaken, the author attempted to test these assumptions. The author believes that previous research on this topic has been, for the most part, methodologically unsound. The present study was designed, not only to test these assumptions using a more suitable method, but also to demonstrate the effect of the errors in method. Participants were 189 women volunteers with a mean age of 25. Premenstrual changes were assessed …

Psychological Distress And Cognitive Coping Processes In Parents Of Infants With Down Syndrome., Brian S. Scott Jan 1988

Psychological Distress And Cognitive Coping Processes In Parents Of Infants With Down Syndrome., Brian S. Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main objectives of this study were: (1) to compare quantitatively the degree of psychological distress in parents of infants with Down syndrome to that in parents of infants without developmental delay, and (2) to determine to what extent the use of self-deception and cognitive approach and avoidance affected psychological distress. Psychological distress was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Profile of Mood States (POMS), and the intrusion subscale of the Impact of Event Scale. Cognitive processes were measured using the Miller Behavioural Style Scale, the Approach Avoidance Scale, and the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding. Results of …

Memory Functions In Reading And Arithmetic-Disabled Children., Clare F. Brandys Jan 1988

Memory Functions In Reading And Arithmetic-Disabled Children., Clare F. Brandys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two subtypes of learning-disabled (LD) children, with primary deficiencies in Reading (RD) and mechanical Arithmetic (AD) were compared to a group of age-matched normals on several memory tasks. Memory tasks were classified according to type and modality of material input, method of response, phonetic properties and visual features of the material encoded, and stage of memory process required. Results showed a double dissociation between the RD and AD groups: RD children evidenced mild difficulty with verbal memory tasks while AD children exhibited difficulty with nonverbal memory tasks. This latter result was particularly robust, suggesting marked difficulties in nonverbal and novel …

Psychological Sequelae Of Infantile Hydrocephalus., Jacobus. Donders Jan 1988

Psychological Sequelae Of Infantile Hydrocephalus., Jacobus. Donders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intellectual, neuropsychological, and emotional sequelae of infantile hydrocephalus were assessed in a sample of 48 five- to eight-year-old children who had been surgically treated for hydrocephalus in the first year of life. Children were given a comprehensive battery of psychological tests. Their parents completed questionnaires pertaining to the psychological adjustment of their child and to their own distress. The significance of a variety of medical history variables with regard to psychometric intelligence was assessed with stepwise discriminant analyses. This revealed that many medical history variables were neutral with regard to intellectual outcome. The presence of additional medical problems in …

A Comparison Of Attributional Processes And Self-Concept Among Behavioural Subtypes Of Learning-Disabled Children., Joan Elaine. Durrant Jan 1988

A Comparison Of Attributional Processes And Self-Concept Among Behavioural Subtypes Of Learning-Disabled Children., Joan Elaine. Durrant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to determine, using carefully-defined comparison groups, whether different behavioural subtypes of LD children form different beliefs regarding their academic and social successes and failures. The 60 subjects of the study comprised four groups of 15 children each: (1) non-LD, non-behaviour-disordered, (2) LD, non-behaviour-disordered, (3) LD demonstrating externalizing symptoms, and (4) LD exhibiting externalizing and internalizing symptoms. The spontaneous attributions of these four groups for hypothetical successful and unsuccessful outcomes in both the academic and social domains were compared. The Children's Cognitive Error Questionnaire was employed to assess subjects' negative distortions of academic and …

An Investigation Of The Personality, Symptomatic, Cognitive Processing, And Coping Factors Associated With The Agoraphobia Syndrome., Garry W. Fisher Jan 1988

An Investigation Of The Personality, Symptomatic, Cognitive Processing, And Coping Factors Associated With The Agoraphobia Syndrome., Garry W. Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was an attempt to integrate a range of presenting difficulties found in the agoraphobia syndrome with the goal of identifying a set of factors which may predispose an individual to respond to stressors in an agoraphobic manner. It was hypothesized that a group of clinical subjects would differ from a nonclinical contrast group on selected variables. In particular, differences related to overall personality functioning, style of forming cognitive attributions related to somatic symptoms, and in patterns of coping with stressful situations were predicted. The clinical subjects consisted of 50 male and female agoraphobics who …

Development And Validation Of A Revised Form Of The Dysfunctional Attitude Scale., Doris J. Swan Jan 1988

Development And Validation Of A Revised Form Of The Dysfunctional Attitude Scale., Doris J. Swan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A rational for developing the original Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS-100) was the measurement of cognitive vulnerability to depression (Weissman & Beck, 1978; Weissman, 1979). The present study was designed to develop and validate a rapid assessment instrument (RAI) based on the DAS-100 for use with university students. Various statistical procedures, including factor analysis, were used to develop a 20 item scale. The DAS-20 is a unidimensional scale measuring a construct that may be identified as Need for Approval. The reliability of the DAS-20 is satisfactory with an internal consistency Alpha coefficient of r =.88, and a test-retest stability coefficient of …
