The COVID-19 pandemic shed light on global mental health struggles, underscoring the need to prioritize wellbeing. Many disciplines currently research aspects of wellbeing, ranging from psychology, behavioral economics, public health, and public policy, to prevention, evaluation, and education. However, researchers have rarely integrated insights across disciplines or extracted meaningful nuance from real-world applications. Many wellbeing interventions can also fall short due to poor design and execution as well as inadequate application of systems thinking and culturally responsive lenses. Abstract
Problem: In September 2023, Hospital X identified a lack of utilization of the Inpatient Handoff Sepsis Bundle Checklist (IHSBC) in the medical-surgical unit with only 25% of nurses being familiar with it. This project aimed to improve the use of the IHSBC to maintain compliance of the sepsis bundle above the benchmark of 75%.
Context: A microsystem assessment was completed in a medical-surgical unit by CNL students at Hospital X. The students collaborated with Hospital X and identified the need to improve the socialization of the IHSBC in the medical-surgical unit.

Problem: Each year, thousands of patients sustain falls while hospitalized, resulting in an increase in serious injuries or death. In a Neuroscience Step Down Unit (NSDU), fall rates in 2022 were higher than the NDNQI benchmark. Despite a thorough fall prevention policy, nurses inconsistently implemented preventative interventions, resulting in increased falls.
Context: The NSDU is a 15-bed inpatient unit providing intermediate-level care for patients with neurological and neurosurgical diagnoses. The unit is part of a 459-bed academic medical center and safety net hospital providing tertiary and quaternary care in southern California.

Background: The American Diabetes Association (ADA) (2022) identifies comorbidity risk assessments and treatment planning as key health maintenance components for diabetic patients. However, many providers do not adhere to the recommended national guidelines (Brenner et al., 2020).

Background: Physical restraint and psychiatric emergency medication use, especially psychotropic medications, is problematic, negatively impacting patient safety on psychiatric units (Ambwani et al., 2021; Iuppa et al., 2013; Rahman, 2021). The Bröset Violence Checklist (Woods & Almvik, 2002), a short-term violence-predicting tool, has been used in the inpatient setting to predict violent outbursts and determine when high-level violence interventions are needed.

Heart failure is a serious chronic health problem requiring ongoing management to control disease progression. Consequences of inadequate heart failure management include acute exacerbation, worsening baseline status, and possibly death. Background: Total intubation time of post-op coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients is set by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) guidelines. STS states that post-op CABG patients need to be extubated within twelve hours of end anesthesia time with a recommendation of fewer than six hours. The project site had a total intubation time of greater than seventeen hours before removing the outliers. The current process does not result in a total intubation time of fewer than six hours. Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) care for critically ill newborn babies. Family Centered Care (FCC) is a relatively new standard of NICU care that allows for caregivers to be as much of a part of the NICU experience as health care providers. This thesis utilized a review of literature to identify research that shows that FCC is an effective way to improve outcomes for neonates and their caregivers. Many sources did provide evidence for this. Problem: Unplanned, inpatient surgical patients were experiencing poor outcomes and dissatisfaction with their overall care. This surgical patient population also lacked communication from their healthcare teams with regard to plans of care throughout their hospital stays.
Context: This was a quality improvement project for the unplanned, inpatient surgical patient population in the Central Valley of California. Approximately 13% of this hospital’s surgical patients required post-surgical care in the inpatient units. These patients, according to unfavorable HCAHPS scores, experienced unsatisfying care and insufficient communication from their healthcare teams, including physicians and nurses.

In collaboration with the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, I collected detailed information on the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea Latreille, 1802) of the refuge. I produced a comprehensive checklist of butterflies and skippers numbering 60 species. In addition, I collected data on flight periods as well as local plant community associations. Butterfly abundance surveys were conducted to assess seasonal habitat use across six site classes. Special emphasis was placed on pine forest at various stages of management for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis). Practice Problem:There was a report of a high rate of medication errors from inaccurate medication reconciliation during admission to a local hospital in South Texas. The medication error rate was 14.88% on 20 reviewed charts, and 85% of all evaluated charts contained at least one medication discrepancy.

This dissertation consists of three separate chapters: Blackbrush (Coleogyne ramosissima) natural regeneration in the Great Basin-Mojave Desert Transition Zone on two fires, Long-term Response to Fire in Eastern Mojave Desert semi-arid shrubland communities, and an Annotated Checklist of Gold Butte National Monument in the Mojave-Colorado Plateau Transition Zone. Transfusions are the most common procedure that hospitalized patients undergo. One of the risks associated with a transfusion is a transfusion related adverse event (TAAE). Transfusion associated adverse events can occur in any patient receiving a transfusion. Some patients are at risk of certain TAAEs (e.g., heart failure patients at risk of transfusion associated circulatory overload) while other events (e.g., allergic reactions) cannot always be anticipated. The severity of a TAAE can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening. Without proper preventative measures, T2D damages the microvascular within the retina causing diabetic retinopathy (Lima, Cavalieri, Lima, Nazorio, & Lim, 2016). Ineffective communication in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) is considered to have incidences of increased error, mortality, morbidity, which leads to decrease patient outcomes and quality of care. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to introduce a structured, standardized, and consistent handoff tool to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Anesthesiologists, and Post Anesthesia Care Unit Nurses (PACU) that may result in favorable perception of usage. Without a structured handoff tool, the organization risks the occurrence of increasing errors when the message is not transmitted effectively and efficiently every time. Poor and inadequate handoff, or transfer of care of the surgical patient care from the primary to the relief operating room registered nurse circulators, can result in irreversible patient harm, or sentinel events, such as retained foreign items. In this study, Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory was the framework for implementing the handoff safety checklist. Also, Donabedian's structure process and outcome was the model to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and improvement in the quality of patient handoff communication and improvement of nurse satisfaction over time. Job performance aids (JPAs) have been studied for many decades in a variety of disciplines and for many different types of tasks, yet this is the first known research experiment using JPAs in a quality assurance (QA) context. The objective of this thesis was to assess whether a JPA has an effect on the performance of a QA observer performing the concurrent dual verification technique for a basic assembly task.
