Discrete Implementation Of A Discontinuous Conduction Mode Flyback Regulator, Joseph Even Dec 2021

Discrete Implementation Of A Discontinuous Conduction Mode Flyback Regulator, Joseph Even

Theses

This paper discusses the design of a flyback regulator implemented without a dedicated flyback controller integrated circuit (IC). Instead, all aspects of the voltage-mode controller are implemented discretely using a series of timing ICs, logic gates, and comparators. Utilizing a flyback transformer and an optoisolator, galvanic isolation is maintained in the design of a 12V-25V input, 5V/1A output, DC-DC flyback regulator with a constant switching frequency of 100kHz and fixed duty cycle of 0.443. After performing calculations to determine performance parameters, parts are selected to meet design specifications, schematic capture and printed circuit board (PCB) layout are performed, the PCB …

Impulsive Control For The Short Time Convergence Of The Second Order System, Svetlana Green Jan 2015

Impulsive Control For The Short Time Convergence Of The Second Order System, Svetlana Green

Theses

This paper proposed impulsive control algorithm for dynamic systems in the presence of unknown bounded disturbance. The impulsive control functions instantaneously (or in a short time) drive the system’s states to the origin (or to its small vicinity). The proposed sequential impulsive algorithm is comprised of the series of impulses described by Dirac delta function and its derivative. In order to apply these solutions to physical systems, the approximations of delta-type impulses are described in terms of physically realizable functions given by a piecewise-constant approximation. The efficacy of proposed control technique is confirmed via simulation of a case study, specifically, …

Unmanned Ground Vehicle Navigation And Coverage Hole Patching In Wireless Sensor Networks, Guyu Zhang Apr 2013

Unmanned Ground Vehicle Navigation And Coverage Hole Patching In Wireless Sensor Networks, Guyu Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a study of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) navigation and coverage hole patching in coordinate-free and localization-free Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Navigation and coverage maintenance are related problems since coverage hole patching requires effective navigation in the sensor network environment. A coordinate-free and localization-free WSN that is deployed in an ad-hoc fashion and does not assume the availability of GPS information is considered. The system considered is decentralized and can be self-organized in an event-driven manner where no central controller or global map is required.

A single-UGV, single-destination navigation problem is addressed first. The UGV is equipped …

Application Of Sliding Mode Controller And Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Controller To A Pmsm Speed System, Yang Zhao Jan 2013

Application Of Sliding Mode Controller And Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Controller To A Pmsm Speed System, Yang Zhao

ETD Archive

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a popular electric machine in industry for its small volume, high electromagnetic torque, high reliability and low cost. It is broadly used in automobiles and aircrafts. However, PMSM has its inherent problems of nonlinearity and coupling, which are challenges for control systems design. In addition, the external disturbances such as load variation and noises could degrade the systems performance. Both sliding mode control (SMC) and active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) are robust against disturbances. They can also compensate the nonlinearity and couplings of the PMSM. Therefore, in this thesis, we apply both SMC and …

Viscosity Regulation In Polymer Extrusion, Diane K. Haberbusch Jan 2013

Viscosity Regulation In Polymer Extrusion, Diane K. Haberbusch

ETD Archive

The interesting background and history of polymer extrusion are first introduced in this thesis. The complexity of the extrusion process is described, along with sources of disturbances. A literature review of the types of controllers that have been used for viscosity regulation in polymer extrusion is given, including the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) proportional-integral (PI) controllers. Polymer viscosity in extrusion is difficult to model accurately and its regulation is prone to disturbances. Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) is the right method for addressing the model inaccuracies and facilitates a straightforward solution to accommodate industrial needs with parameters that can be easily tuned …

On The Analysis And Design Of Disturbance Rejecter, Jason Tatsumi Jan 2013

On The Analysis And Design Of Disturbance Rejecter, Jason Tatsumi

ETD Archive

In this thesis, the impact of the disturbance rejecter concept and the enforced plant has been explored. In order for the active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) to provide a reasonable alternative to the industry standard PID controller, it is necessary to develop tuning procedures capable of providing adequate performance with reasonable stability margins. A focus should be placed upon the disturbance rejecter, as it is the heart and soul of ADRC. In this thesis, transfer function analysis of the enforced plant has been performed to connect ADRC with the tools from classical control. The relationship between the gain parameter and …

Process Study And Control Of Electron Beam Melting Technology Using Infrared Thermography, Jorge Mireles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

An IR camera was installed in an Arcam A2 system (Arcam AB, Mölndal, Sweeden) and layer-by-layer image acquisition was achieved. The camera's capability to detect manufacturing defects was evaluated by implementing computer vision techniques using LabVIEW measurement and programming software (National Instruments, Austin, TX). Thermal maps acquired by the IR camera allowed layer-by-layer part temperature to be recorded. A core objective of this research was to study the impact of processing temperature on EBM-fabricated Ti-6Al-4V parts and achieve controlled mechanical properties. In this research, build variations were achieved by modifying parameters that change processing temperature from the standard processing temperature. …

Practical Solutions To The Non-Minimum Phase And Vibration Problems Under The Disturbance Rejection Paradigm, Shen Zhao Jan 2012

Practical Solutions To The Non-Minimum Phase And Vibration Problems Under The Disturbance Rejection Paradigm, Shen Zhao

ETD Archive

This dissertation tackles two kinds of control problems under the disturbance rejection paradigm (DRP): 1) the general problem of non-minimum phase (NMP) systems, such as systems with right half plane (RHP) zeros and those with time delay 2) the specific problem of vibration, a prevailing problem facing practicing engineers in the real world of industrial control. It is shown that the DRP brings to the table a refreshingly novel way of thinking in tackling the persistently challenging problems in control. In particular, the problem of NMP has confounded researchers for decades in trying to find a satisfactory solution that is …

An Active Disturbance Rejection Control Solution For Electro-Hydraulic Servo Systems, Xiao Wang Jan 2012

An Active Disturbance Rejection Control Solution For Electro-Hydraulic Servo Systems, Xiao Wang

ETD Archive

The intriguing history of disturbance cancellation control is reviewed in this thesis first, which demonstrates that this unique control concept is both reasonable and practical. One novel form of disturbance cancellation, ADRC (Active Disturbance Rejection Control), attracts much attention because of its good disturbance rejection ability and simplicity in implementation. Hydraulic systems tend to have many disturbances and model uncertainties, giving us a great motivation to find out a good control method. In this thesis, electro-hydraulic servo control problem is reformulated to focus on the core problem of disturbance rejection. An ADRC solution is developed and evaluated against the industry …

Implementation Of An Advanced Controller On A Torsional Mechanism, Chintan Trivedi Jan 2011

Implementation Of An Advanced Controller On A Torsional Mechanism, Chintan Trivedi

ETD Archive

The hardware implementation of an active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) is presented in the thesis for a mechanical torsional plant. ADRC is a novel disturbance rejection control technique that is not completely dependent on mathematical models of physical systems. In ADRC framework external disturbances, system uncertainties, and internal dynamics of the system are estimated as a generalized disturbance by an extended state observer and the generalized disturbance is effectively canceled by a PD controller. A torsional plant represents a class of rotational systems. Its control challenges are the vibrations caused by mass imbalance, centrifugal imbalance, and the imbalance caused by …

Attitude Control Of A Satellite Simulator Using Reaction Wheels And A Pid Controller, Ryan E. Snider Mar 2010

Attitude Control Of A Satellite Simulator Using Reaction Wheels And A Pid Controller, Ryan E. Snider

Theses and Dissertations

Attitude requirements of a satellite are determined by its mission: telecommunications, optical imagery, and meteorology to name a few. A satellite's ability to orient its mission critical hardware (solar arrays, attitude sensors, etc.), as well as its mission specific payload, is incumbent upon the performance of the satellite's attitude control system (ACS). For a highly accurate ACS and for moderately fast maneuverability, reaction wheels are preferred because they allow continuous and smooth control while inducing the smallest possible disturbance torques. The objective of this research is to design, build, test, and evaluate the performance of a reaction wheel ACS on-board …

A Comparative Study On Fault Detection And Self-Reconfiguration, Ning Ge Jan 2010

A Comparative Study On Fault Detection And Self-Reconfiguration, Ning Ge

ETD Archive

Extended State Observer (ESO) and the Alpha-Beta-Gamma Tracker are introduced and compared. In comparison, the ESO is found to be more noise resistant. The extended state used for the estimation of the general system dynamics in real time makes it suitable for fault detection. Four control schemes are proposed for self-reconfiguration upon fault detection. These schemes are Active Disturbance Rejection Control, Tracker-based Feedback Control, Fuzzy Logic Control and Tracker-based PID Control. To compare their control performance, these schemes are applied to three different applications namely Active Engine Vibration Isolation System, Three-Tank Dynamic System and MEMS Gyroscope System. The advantages and …

On Active Disturbance Rejection Control;Stability Analysis And Applications In Disturbance Decoupling Control, Qing Zheng Jan 2009

On Active Disturbance Rejection Control;Stability Analysis And Applications In Disturbance Decoupling Control, Qing Zheng

ETD Archive

One main contribution of this dissertation is to analyze the stability characteristics of extended state observer (ESO) and active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). In particular, asymptotic stability of the dynamic system that describes the estimation error and the closed-loop system is established where the plant dynamics is completely known. In the face of large dynamic uncertainties, the estimation error, the closed-loop tracking error, and its up to the (n-1)st order derivatives are shown to be bounded. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the error upper bounds, in general, monotonously decrease with the observer and control loop bandwidths. The second contribution is …

Robotics Control Using Active Disturbance Rejection Control, Ousama Said Khairallah Jan 2009

Robotics Control Using Active Disturbance Rejection Control, Ousama Said Khairallah

ETD Archive

Conventional robotics control has been set in stone since the sixties. The world has been waiting too long for a new age of control to change the world of Robotics. Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) is a newly reformed Control methodology. It has been used, in very limited applications, as a replacement for PID control. In this thesis, I will cover the different aspects of the kinematics and dynamics of a robotic manipulator. I will also examine the feasibility of using ADRC to control a robotic manipulator. To explain ADRC, a simple example that demonstrates the concepts and theory of …

Load Frequency Control Of Multiple-Area Power Systems, Yao Zhang Jan 2009

Load Frequency Control Of Multiple-Area Power Systems, Yao Zhang

ETD Archive

In an interconnected power system, as a power load demand varies randomly, both area frequency and tie-line power interchange also vary. The objectives of load frequency control (LFC) are to minimize the transient deviations in theses variables (area frequency and tie-line power interchange) and to ensure their steady state errors to be zeros. When dealing with the LFC problem of power systems, unexpected external disturbances, parameter uncertainties and the model uncertainties of the power system pose big challenges for controller design. Active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), as an increasingly popular practical control technique, has the advantages of requiring little information …

Engineering Tools For Variable Stiffness Vibration Suppression And Isolation, Michael F. Winthrop Jan 2005

Engineering Tools For Variable Stiffness Vibration Suppression And Isolation, Michael F. Winthrop

Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of smart materials, the concept of semi-active control or dynamic control of stiffness and/or damping for vibration control of structures has become practical and has seen limited use. Semi-active control has advantages over active and passive control methods, since it provides almost as much capability as active control while requiring much less power. Its main disadvantage is its inherent nonlinearity, greatly complicating engineering design. The purpose of this research is to extend semi-active control vibration isolation tools and methods considering space launch and on-orbit systems.

Development Of Vibration And Sensitivity Analysis Capability Using The Theory Of Structural Variations, Ting-Yu Rong Jul 1994

Development Of Vibration And Sensitivity Analysis Capability Using The Theory Of Structural Variations, Ting-Yu Rong

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the author's previous work entitled "General Theorems of Topological Variations of Elastic Structures and the Method of Topological Variation," 1985, some interesting properties of skeletal structures have been discovered. These properties have been described as five theorems and synthesized as a theory, called the theory of structural variations (TSV). Based upon this theory, an innovative analysis tool, called the structural variation method (SVM), has been derived for static analysis of skeletal structures (one-dimensional finite element systems).

The objective of this dissertation research is to extend TSV and SVM from one-dimensional finite element systems to multi-dimensional ones and from statics …

Investigation Into Model-Based Fuzzy Logic Control, Michael W. Logan Dec 1993

Investigation Into Model-Based Fuzzy Logic Control, Michael W. Logan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the feasibility of a proposed hybrid linear/Fuzzy controller for nonlinear plants. The proposed controller concept is based on the use of multiple linearizations of a nonlinear plant, which describe the dynamics of perturbations about equilibrium points throughout the desired envelope of operation. A bank of linear compensators is developed, each corresponding to a linearized plant about a different equilibrium. The multiple control signals generated by the bank of compensators are then weighted and summed using Fuzzy Logic to produce a composite control perturbation signal, which is used to drive the nonlinear plant. Experiments were conducted to test …

Modal Control Of Flexible Beam Using Smart Mateirals, Sujata Mallepalle Jan 1993

Modal Control Of Flexible Beam Using Smart Mateirals, Sujata Mallepalle

Theses

In this work, the dynamics and control aspects of a vibrating flexible beam using modal analysis are studied. To damp the vibrations of the system, the vibrations of each mode has to he controlled, which can he done if we know the individual mode shape. and the resonance frequency. These quantities can be derived mathematically or measured experimentally with a spectrum analyzer. Individual modal velocities can be computed by integration of the product of beam velocity and the mode shape, over the interval of beam length. The integration is carried out using numerical methods. The necessary discrete ordinates are obtained …
