Communication And Female Date Initiation: Differences In Perception Based On Sex Of Initiator, Lindsey Kay Odom

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

First dates represent an important early event in the development of dating relationships. Women initiating dates is a deviation from cultural norms or what society views as expected behavior. The deviation in behavior could have negative repercussions for women, which was investigated for the current study. College-aged participants (n = 232) completed an online survey regarding their perceptions of two hypothetical women who initiated dates. Informed by Expectancy Violations Theory, the expectedness and valence of the date-initiation behavior and mode of follow-up …

Situational And Sex Role Determinants Of Male Reactions To Female Assertion, Linda. Mesing

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation examined male reactions to female assertion as a function of attitudes toward women and situational context. Male college students observed videotapes of a female model behaving passively and assertively in each of two situations. Subjects completed an adjective rating scale of the model's behavior after each videotaped scenario. The Attitudes Toward Women Scale was completed by each subject, as well, and served to classify subjects as either liberal or traditional. Results indicated that the female model was given lower ratings of likeability in the assertive conditions than passive conditions, but was given higher ratings on ability/achievement measures …

The Effects Of Subject Assertiveness On Perceived Assertiveness Of Others, Lisa E. Robertori, Sandra D. Hulbert Jan 1984

The Effects Of Subject Assertiveness On Perceived Assertiveness Of Others, Lisa E. Robertori, Sandra D. Hulbert

Honors Theses

The effects of subject-assertiveness on perceived assertiveness in others were investigated. A subject's assertiveness level was determined by scores on the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule. Subjects were randomly assigned to watch a videotape portraying a low-, medium-, or high-assertive actor and then asked to rate the actor on a 14-item semantic differential scale and on the Impact Message Inventory. Several Pearson product-moment correlations revealed significant results, supporting the original hypothesis. Suggestions for future research are included.

Assertion Training Of Nursing Home Residents, Roberta Saul Feb 1978

Assertion Training Of Nursing Home Residents, Roberta Saul

Dissertations and Theses

The National Organization for Women use assertion training as a part of its strategy to overcome the oppression of women in our society. Certainly another group of people who suffer from oppression are the elderly. When a person in our society reaches age 65, he or she may suddenly be perceived as of decreased worth and may face forced retirement and quite often may have to adjust to a lifestyle of poverty. If an elderly person's physical health begins to wane, a nursing home may suddenly become the day to day environment he or she must accept.

A Study Of The Relationship Between Self-Concept, Public Image, And Consensus Rorschach Performance, Dale Sherman Walhood Jan 1975

A Study Of The Relationship Between Self-Concept, Public Image, And Consensus Rorschach Performance, Dale Sherman Walhood

Dissertations and Theses

Four measures of dominance were taken on college roommate pairs. Three of the measures were derived from Leary’s interpersonal system for diagnosing personality. The fourth measure was derived from the consensus approach to Rorschach administration. Dominance scores for self-concept, public image, predicated image (a new measure in which a person attempts to predict how a significant other sees him) and consensus Rorschach performance were computed. Predicted image correlated higher with self-concept than public image as predicted. Results suggest that dominance as measured by the Rorschach is related to both public image and self-concept. Submissive members appear to understand the structure …
