Implementation Of A Mindfulness Intervention To Increase Adolescent Resilience In An After-School Program: A Quality Improvement Project., Katie Thomas

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: Globally, fourteen percent of adolescents ages 10 to 19 years old suffer from mental health problems (World Health Organization, 2021). Resilience is a fundamental concept of the mental health promotion framework (CAMH, 2022).The WHO (2020) “Guidelines on Mental Health Promotive and Preventive Interventions for Adolescents” includes the recommendation that universal interventions to promote mental health and reduce mental disorders should include social and emotional learning (SEL), such as emotional regulation, mindfulness, stress management, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are one evidence-based method of accomplishing this goal (Sapthiang et al., 2018). Purpose: The purpose of …

A Mixed Methods Assessment Of Menstrual Hygiene Management And School Attendance Among Schoolgirls In Edo State, Nigeria., Madeline Tomlinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Menstrual hygiene in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) is limited and has been linked to many health, educational and social effects. However, the prevalence, details, and impact of menstrual hygiene management have not been well characterized in rural and peri-urban settings across Nigeria. The overall purpose of this research was to investigate menstrual hygiene management (MHM) among adolescent schoolgirls in peri-urban areas of Edo State, Nigeria; and to determine the educational consequences associated with poor MHM. MHM was measured using previously validated questions that were adapted after a formative assessment of MHM within the Edo State community. We used a mixed methods …

Implementation And Evaluation Of Asthma Education Cell Phone Application: Asthmaxcel, Within An Allergy And Asthma Specialty Practice., Michael Stefan Swift

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Abstract

Background: Asthma is the leading chronic illness among pediatric patients. One of the most significant obstacles facing asthma care is adherence to asthma management plans. In the pediatric population, adolescents (ages 12-17) traditionally have poor asthma management. Research shows that adolescents respond well to technology-based education and that improving adolescent healthcare literacy leads to better asthma control.

Environment: This project took place at an allergy and asthma specialists office. This private practice includes primary care allergy, asthma, and immunology services that follows roughly 120 adolescents with asthma.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to provide the allergy and …

The Effects Of Self-Regulated Strategy Development Instruction On Argument Writing Skills Of Adolescents With Mild Disabilities., Stacy Crawford Bewley May 2020

The Effects Of Self-Regulated Strategy Development Instruction On Argument Writing Skills Of Adolescents With Mild Disabilities., Stacy Crawford Bewley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics (2012) indicates that a large majority of students with disabilities continue to perform at basic proficiency or below in the area of writing, which has serious implications for post-secondary academic endeavors and successful transition into the workforce (US Department of Labor, 2014; Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2017). Therefore, it is imperative to identify and implement effective writing interventions for this population of students. Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) has been widely researched in elementary and middle school settings, but much less research has been conducted with high school students. The purpose of …

Handgun Carrying Patterns And Suicide Risk Among Youth., Teresa Jane Mcgeeney May 2019

Handgun Carrying Patterns And Suicide Risk Among Youth., Teresa Jane Mcgeeney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent data have shown marked increases in carrying of handguns among youth. Though firearms are often discussed using a lens of prevention of violence towards others, the majority of firearm deaths are suicides. Youth suicide has also seen steady increases across the United States in the past decade, demanding urgent solutions to curb this concerning trend. Klonsky and May’s Three Step Theory (3ST) outlines three primary steps that lead to death by suicide and proposes that access to and familiarity with lethal means, such as firearms, make up a critical component of the etiology of suicide. With youth suicide and …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Longitudinal Relationship Between Adolescent Depression And Academic Achievement., Rachel E. Buehner May 2017

A Meta-Analysis Of The Longitudinal Relationship Between Adolescent Depression And Academic Achievement., Rachel E. Buehner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers in the fields of both education and mental health endeavor to develop and implement interventions which will bring children and adolescents greater academic success and optimally address mental health issues. Educators seek to target risk factors which might impede a student’s success in the classroom, while mental health providers seek to reduce issues within a child’s environment which might be risk factors for depression. Evidence for a cross-sectional relationship between adolescent depression and academic achievement is well-supported, with depression and achievement being negatively correlated in adolescents. The longitudinal relationship between these two variables is not fully understood, however. While …

Racial Identity Attitudes, Perceived Barriers, Career Self-Efficacy, And Career Outcome Expectations Among African American Male Adolescents., Norman L. Townsel 1960- Dec 2012

Racial Identity Attitudes, Perceived Barriers, Career Self-Efficacy, And Career Outcome Expectations Among African American Male Adolescents., Norman L. Townsel 1960-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) holds that self-efficacy and outcome expectations are primary predictors of career choice goals and actions, with contextual influences moderating those choices and actions. Racial identity research indicates that African American adolescents perceive more barriers than their White counterparts. The current study hypothesized that chronological age, racial identity attitudes, and the perception of barriers would be significant influences on self-efficacy and outcome expectations for African American adolescents. The study explored the research question using two separate stepwise regression analyses. The first analysis explored racial identity attitudes, age, and perceived barriers in relation to self efficacy. The …

Adolescent Steroid Use : A Logistic Regression Analysis., Anthony Gennaro Vito 1987-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study compared the criminological theories of peer association and low self-control and its effect on adolescent steroid use. The data for this study comes from the 12th grade survey of the 2009 Monitoring the Future Project Form 6. The purpose of the Monitoring the Future Project (MTF) is to understand changes in values, behaviors, and lifestyle orientations of the American youth. The study found that peer association, low self-control and the sex of the adolescent are all significant predictors of adolescent steroid use.
