Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explored the effects of exposure to natural green spaces on symptoms of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among diagnosed college students. Six students from three universities in the San Francisco Bay Area were interviewed regarding the impact of experiences in urban green spaces and wilderness on their perceived attentional functioning, stress, and mood. The study sought to: 1) contribute to the growing base of literature and research on Attention Restoration Theory (ART); 2) offer a potential non-pharmacological alternative treatment for ADHD; and 3) further develop within the field of social work an understanding of the natural environment as it …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Career Ideation : An Application Of Hope Theory And Social Cognitive Career Theory, Miya V. Drucker Dec 2012

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Career Ideation : An Application Of Hope Theory And Social Cognitive Career Theory, Miya V. Drucker

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explores hope theory (Snyder, 1991) and social cognitive career theory (Lent, Hackett and Brown, 1994) perspectives related to the impact of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on a young adult's professional identity and career ideation. Hope theory posits that there are three primary influences on one's sense of hope, these are: selfagency, pathways and attainment of goals. Social cognitive career theory posits that career ideation and performance is manifested by the interplay of multiple factors, including: selfefficacy, outcome expectations, goals, and negotiation of supports and barriers. The scientific and counseling literatures have not adequately explored the effects …

The Relationship Between Religion And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Philip B. Mason Dec 2012

The Relationship Between Religion And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Philip B. Mason

Theses and Dissertations

Research shows that religious people have higher levels of self-control. Scientists also hypothesize that individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are less likely to participate in religious services which require long periods of attention and self discipline. However, little research has investigated the potential relationship between ADHD and religious participation. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), this study finds (1) mothers’ prayer frequency is marginally related to children’s ADHD symptoms and diagnosis although other religious indicators are not significantly related, (2) childhood religious involvement and affiliation are not significantly related to ADHD symptoms and diagnosis, …

Maddy The Mathasaurus: An Interactive Math Game That Introduces The Concept And Properties Of Multiplication And Designed With Consideration For Children With Adhd, Mansi Vora

Theses

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is one of the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder in kids, and is estimated to affect about 8-10% of school-aged children. Research shows that out of these children about 26% particularly have Math learning disabilities. The cognitive ability to understand and solve complex mathematical problems requires high level of concentration over a longer duration of time. This ability is disrupted in certain children due to ADHD. Therefore these students are likely to receive lower grades or even failure in standardized measures. However, if an educational environment is created that is specifically targeted towards reducing the …

Examining Attention, Impulsiveness, And Cognitive Failures In Driving Behaviors, Russell Thomas Fox Aug 2012

Examining Attention, Impulsiveness, And Cognitive Failures In Driving Behaviors, Russell Thomas Fox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dangerous driving behaviors are influenced by multiple factors including cognitive processes such as impulse inhibition and attentiveness. Impulsiveness, inattention, and cognitive failures have been linked to other risky behaviors, but a comprehensive evaluation using multiple methods of measurement of these has never been conducted to analyze their impact on dangerous driving. The purpose of this study was to examine influences of attentional abilities, impulsiveness, and cognitive failures on reported and demonstrated dangerous driving behaviors. Seventy-five participants completed a self-report dangerous driving measure, a self-report ADHD measure, a self-report impulsiveness measure, a continuous performance task to measure behavioral impulsivity and inattention, …

Adhd Problem Recognition For Latino Parents: The Role Of Cultural Factors And Parental Cognitions, Brian W. Schneider Jul 2012

Adhd Problem Recognition For Latino Parents: The Role Of Cultural Factors And Parental Cognitions, Brian W. Schneider

Dissertations (1934 -)

Latino youth experience similar or higher rates of mental health problems including ADHD, as compared to non-Latino children in the United States. They also are less likely to receive services due to a variety of access barriers and cultural factors which Latino families commonly experience. Behavioral help-seeking models have been developed to help explain the discrepancies between need and utilization for ethnically-diverse youth. Little research to date has investigated the impact of culture and parental beliefs of child behavior throughout the help-seeking process, including the beginning stage of problem recognition. Thus, the goal of the current study was to examine …

The Impact Of Mindfulness Training On Hyperactive Behaviors Demonstrated By Elementary Age Children With A Diagnosis Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jessica A. Carboni

Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations

Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent childhood disorders in the United States. Although many children with an ADHD diagnosis are prescribed medication to control symptoms, behavioral concerns are still regularly noted in the classroom, home, and other settings. Therefore, school psychologists are often called upon to assist teachers and families with developing intervention procedures. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between mindfulness training, the cognitive processes of attention regulation, and behavior of children who have been diagnosed with ADHD. This study utilized a multiple baseline across participant’s design where each …

Increased Modulation By Cognitive Control Region During Fmri Working Memory Task Suggest Inefficiencies In Network Connectivity In Children With Adhd, Ashley Burgess

Honors College Theses

Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder common among children and adolescent populations whose symptoms are believed to be caused by deficits in executive functioning processes such as working memory. Using fMRI analyses, differences in the modulatory influence exhibited by the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) on cortico-striatal regions implicated in working memory (2-back) (Owen et al 2005) was assessed between children with ADHD (twenty-three participants; mean age 6 yrs: 6.4-14.9 yrs) and healthy controls (twenty-six participants; mean age 10.1yrs: 6.3-14.1 yrs). Modulatory influence is defined as the degree to which one region exerts control on another region …

Analysis Of Induced Gamma Oscillations With A Data Alignment Technique In Autism And Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder., Eric Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often lack the ability to recognize and properly respond to emotional stimuli. These emotional deficits are also observed in children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but are often overshadowed by the focus on limited attention span. A growing body of research suggests that there may be links between ASD and ADHD, which requires further study. Investigation of this hypothesis often relies on the Theory of Mind (ToM) construct to frame experiments that explore the relationship between these two conditions. Many experiments utilize electroencephalographic (EEG) data to quantitatively assess brain activity. The …

Analysis Of Eeg Rhythms Using Custom-Made Matlab Application For Processing Of Data Collected During Neurofeedback Training In Adhd Subjects., Brent Hillard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that is prevalent throughout the world. It is believed that 5% of school aged children suffer from ADHD, with some estimates indicating as high as 10% may suffer from the disorder. Primarily, three subtypes of ADHD have been associated with certain electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities. The most common treatment for ADHD is medication. However, neurofeedback is considered an efficacious treatment for ADHD. It is proposed that neurofeedback training aimed to mitigate inattention and low arousal in ADHD will be accompanied by changes in EEG bands' relative power. DATA COLLECTION: Patients were 18 children …

Dissertations

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood psychiatric disorders and is associated with a variety of difficult behaviors. In addition, parents of children with ADHD experience significantly greater parenting stress and psychological distress than parents of children without ADHD. However, social support is a beneficial coping tool associated with increased mental and physical well-being in those experiencing stress. Although many turn to family and friends for social support, people sometimes go outside of their immediate support network and seek support groups. In recent years, Internet support groups have become a popular alternative to face-to-face support groups. However, …

How Successful Is Homework Success For Children With Adhd?, Alexis Resnick Jan 2012

How Successful Is Homework Success For Children With Adhd?, Alexis Resnick

Theses and Dissertations

ADHD-diagnosed children generally display multiple difficulties with academic functioning (DuPaul, 2007; Loe & Feldman, 2007; Raggi & Chronis, 2006; Rogers, Wiener, Marton, & Tannock, 2009) and tend to show more frequent and intense homework problems than their peers (Power, Karustis, & Habboushe, 2001). Traditionally, treatments for ADHD have included medication and/or behavioral interventions (DuPaul & Weyandt, 2006; Loe & Feldman, 2007); however, interventions targeting the homework problems of children with ADHD have been limited. One such intervention for the treatment of children with ADHD and homework problems, the Homework Success Program (HSP), has yet to be empirically evaluated with individual …

The current study examined the confined, combined and collateral effects of a daily report card (DRC) and a homework self-monitoring intervention (HSM). Four 4th or 5th grade students with ADHD, who often had problems staying on task and completing classwork and homework accurately were randomly assigned to one of two conditions in a multiple baseline design. Initially each student received either a DRC or HSM and was then given whichever intervention they had not yet received in addition. As expected, both the DRC and HSM improved the initially targeted behavior as found in previous research; the DRC improved on task …

The Influence Of The Method Of Cerebral Protection During Neonatal Cardiac Surgery On The Development Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Joseph J. Sistino Jan 2012

The Influence Of The Method Of Cerebral Protection During Neonatal Cardiac Surgery On The Development Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Joseph J. Sistino

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Complex congenital heart disease is a common birth defect requiring surgery soon after birth. Surgery can use a complete interruption of cerebral blood flow (DHCA) or it can be performed using regional low flow perfusion (RLFP). Either approach places the neonate at risk for oxygen deprivation resulting in neurodevelopmental impairment and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). RLFP has been widely adopted but its effect on ADHD has not been elucidated. We extracted surgical records data and surveyed parents of 5-16 year old children who had neonatal surgery using DHCA or RLFP in 1995-2006 to determine the prevalence of ADHD after DHCA …
