Randomized Algorithms For Resource Allocation In Device To Device Communication., Subhankar Ghosal Dr.
Randomized Algorithms For Resource Allocation In Device To Device Communication., Subhankar Ghosal Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In device to device (D2D) communication, two users residing in close proximity can directly communicate between them, through a common channel, without the need of a base station. A pair of D2D users forms a link and a channel needs to be allocated to it. The interference relationship among the active links at time t is modelled as an interference graph g(t). To establish interference-free communication, we have to assign a channel vector C(t) and a power vector corresponding to the active links such that the required signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) is satisfied for each link. Since …
Understanding Your Cultural Identities: A Self-Study Of The Impact Of One’S Cultural Identities On Interpreting Interactions, Shelby L.W. Sammartino
Understanding Your Cultural Identities: A Self-Study Of The Impact Of One’S Cultural Identities On Interpreting Interactions, Shelby L.W. Sammartino
Education Doctorate Dissertations
There is a disproportionality of students of color receiving office referrals for disrespect and defiance because disrespect and defiance are subjective in interpretation by teachers in the classroom. This self-study aims for the researcher to identify and understand the construction of their cultural identities, so they can determine how their cultural identities impact their interpretation of interactions with students concerning disrespect and defiance, how their cultural identities impact their choice of behavior management technique in interactions concerning disrespect and defiance, and how their cultural identities impact their discipline decisions in interactions concerning disrespect and defiance. The data to determine the …
Improving Nursing Shift Handoff Reports: A Quality Improvement Project, Nathan Mm Secrest
Improving Nursing Shift Handoff Reports: A Quality Improvement Project, Nathan Mm Secrest
Master's Projects and Capstones
Nursing shift-to-shift handoff report can greatly impact a patient’s quality of care. According to the Joint Commission, “an estimated 80 percent of serious medical errors involve miscommunication between caregivers when patients are transferred or handed-off” (Inadequate handoff communication, 2017). In total, this quality improvement (QI) project worked with three hospital inpatient units on three different floors in an urban California (CA) city. Each unit and even shifts within each unit varied, leading to the conclusion that interventions should be trialed by units with the most buy-in, then adjusted to the unique needs of each unit. For our main intervention we …
“Surfaces And Appearances”: Character, Physiognomy, And Communication In Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S A Message From The Sea, Rachel Gouff
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes the way physiognomy works within Charles Dickens’s and Wilkie Collins’s novella, A Message from the Sea. The novella develops and promotes a version of physiognomy with limits, illustrating these limits through the experiences of its characters and through the symbolism of various objects such as tombstones, ghosts, and—most notably—the message in the bottle. Physiognomy, used repeatedly by various characters throughout the text, is nearly always able to correctly predict people’s general moral character. However, using physiognomy alone leaves a character’s history, motivations, and deep emotions as indecipherable as the parts of the bottle’s message where the ink …
An Examination Of The Associations Between Relationship Education, Trust, Communication, Relationship Satisfaction, And Sexual Satisfaction, Samantha Baker
An Examination Of The Associations Between Relationship Education, Trust, Communication, Relationship Satisfaction, And Sexual Satisfaction, Samantha Baker
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Relationship education courses are commonly used by couples seeking to increase their relationship and sexual satisfaction. In this study, I examined the mediating roles of trust and communication between marriage education classes and relationship and sexual satisfaction. This study used data from the Couple Relationships and Transition Experiences (CREATE) study, a longitudinal, nationally representative survey of newlywed couples. While the present study did not find a significant relationship between marriage preparation and relationship and sexual satisfaction, it does not rule out the possibility of a relationship existing due to some limitations of the present study. This study did find significant …

Communicating Multiplicative Reasoning Through Semiotic Resources, Emilie N. Eisenberger
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The importance of fostering in students the requisite language to understand what is being communicated and how to communicate their understanding requires educators to conceptualize themselves as teachers of language and content. It is possible to engage in activities of the mathematics classroom and through that participation engage in language practices and mathematical practices simultaneously. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of semiotic resources, and modality, with a student-generated tool on students’ communication of multiplicative reasoning.
The study design was a qualitative case study that included a single third-grade class with an in-depth look at six …

The Role Social Media Influencers Play In A Company's Brand, Taylor Todi
Theses
Influencer marketing is a tactic that many companies have had to integrate into their businesses to better communicate with consumers. The purpose of this research is to analyze the role influencer marketing plays in a company's brand. This study assesses the way consumers build trust and relationships with companies through the help of influencers. There are many variables that come into play, for example, emotional attachment, authenticity, and loyalty are just three that have been measured in previous studies. These same variables are used in this research to see if they can also apply to a company that uses influencers …
The Importance Of Hand Motions For Communication And Interaction In Virtual Reality, Alex Adkins
The Importance Of Hand Motions For Communication And Interaction In Virtual Reality, Alex Adkins
All Dissertations
Virtual reality (VR) is a growing method of communication and play. Recent advances have enabled hand-tracking technologies for consumer VR headsets, allowing virtual hands to mimic a user's real hand movements in real-time. A growing number of users now utilize hand-tracking when using VR to manipulate objects or to create gestures when interacting with others. As VR grows as a tool and communication platform, it is important to understand how the rising prevalence of hand-tracking technology might affect users' experiences.
The goal of this dissertation is to investigate, through a series of experiments, how using hand motions in VR influences …

Cultivating Christian Community In A Post-Covid Era, Susie M. Lloyd
Journalism
This study focuses on how to meet the needs of young adult Christians through community and resources, all of which aim to help them live more like Jesus. There are many online resources for Christians, but society lacks a “one-stop shop” website that has every resource a young adult following Jesus could need. These resources include an online community where people can choose what mode of community they need, whether that be one-on-one discipleship or mentorship, consistent group meetings with people their own age, an accountability partner, or just a friend who shares similar beliefs and values. In an era …

This qualitative research study is an exploration of how college students navigate code-switching between their home and academic environments. Data were collected from five participants using interview and small group methods. Through the lenses of Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) and Memorable Messages (MM) frameworks, the researcher explores how key MMs affect how participants coordinate and manage meaning in communications with others in their home and college environments. Findings were fourfold: 1) participants chose between following established and creating new rules when code-switching; 2) participants shared experiences and strategies regarding knowing when and how to code-switch; 3) preparing audiences for …
The Parkinson’S Prison And The Hero’S Journey To Escape: Improvisation And Storytelling In Parkinson’S Disease, Robert David Cochrane
The Parkinson’S Prison And The Hero’S Journey To Escape: Improvisation And Storytelling In Parkinson’S Disease, Robert David Cochrane
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world, with leading researchers calling it a pandemic. While there is no cure, pharmaceuticals and surgical interventions increase people with Parkinson’s (PWP) ability to lead longer and more productive lives. However, there is a lack of care available for PWP supporting their social and emotional domains. PWP report high levels of stress, anxiety, and isolation due to the chronic and unpredictably progressive nature of the disease. This leads to a vicious cycle of loss of confidence, decreased activity and socialization, and increased falls.A common phrase in the PD community …
Ecology And Evolution Of Social Information Use, Clare T. M. Doherty
Ecology And Evolution Of Social Information Use, Clare T. M. Doherty
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Sociality is a strategy many animals employ to cope with their environments, enabling them to survive and reproduce more successfully than would otherwise be possible. When navigating their environments and making decisions, social individuals often use information provided by conspecifics (in the form of social cues and signals), thereby increasing the scope and reliability of the information they can gather. However, social information use may be influenced by many factors, including key differences in context across the physical and social environment. My thesis asks and answers a series of questions regarding the trade-offs in social information use across different contexts, …

From The First Encounter: A Communication Program For High Volume, High Acuity Patient Care Locations, Shazam Bacchus
Student Scholarly Projects
Effective communication is a true value to healthcare organizations. Far too many communication sessions are detrimental to patient health outcomes. National data and hospital records are proven information to suggest communication is a major barrier to overall patient satisfaction. Organizations struggle to increase market share and patient satisfaction with a likelihood to recommend because of poor communication by physician and nurses. The use of a strategic communication tool like AIDET plus the Promise can influence the improvement of an organization’s quality of care.
This paper examines the use of AIDET plus the Promise as a strategic communication tool. High volume, …

Abstract
Sustainability is integrated into the higher education institutions as a new culture. Since the emergence of various declarations and policies, higher education institutions have integrated, implemented and practiced sustainability in the form of campus operations, community engagement and academic programs. As a result, some institutions have started communicating about their sustainability practices through their websites to inform their stakeholders. It is also noted that prospective students prefer to study in institutions that communicate about sustainability on their websites. However, there is a gap in research to understand the strategies used by higher education institutions to communicate sustainability. This content …

A Bedside Handoff Tool To Enhance Fall Safety Measures In The Emergency Department, Isha Adora Godbold
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: The Emergency Department (ED) is a fast-paced environment where the risk of communication failure enhances due to the variation in patient acuity, variety of shift options, and constant interruptions (White- Trevino & Dearmon, 2018). Ineffective communication can lead to increased adverse events, medical errors, and poorer patient health outcomes (Campbell & Dontje, 2019). Additionally, medical errors, such as falls, are more likely to occur during handoff when nurses change shifts (Campbell & Dontje, 2019). The most reoccurring medical error in the ED is patient falls.
Purpose: This quality improvement project aims to introduce a structured handoff rounding

Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Frequently, communication from the Quality Department (QD) needs to be filtered through several organizational layers without first-hand knowledge of what message was given to frontline staff. Current mechanisms of communication between the QD and front-line microsystem teams have barriers preventing them from being consistent and reliable.
Context: Research has found that collaborating with and supporting frontline staff was key to establishing a culture that supports change and a focus on safety. Establishing open communication and effective teamwork with individuals on the frontline leads to shared values within a team and better collaboration which drives performance improvement.
Interventions: For trended …

Bullies, Browbeaters, And Bulldozers: Expectancy Violation And Management Intervention Processes Of Workplace Bullying, Kylie T. Julius
Masters Theses
Bullies, browbeaters, and bulldozers are a prevalent problem within workplaces (Namie, 2017), resulting in extreme emotional effects for employees, and intense impact on the bottom line of organizations (Olive & Cangemi, 2015). As workplace bullying continues to occur throughout many organizations, expectations for communication and behavior are repeatedly violated. Thus, expectancy violations theory (EVT) provides framework for the following workplace bullying behavior research. The relevant literature regarding EVT was reviewed and its framing of intervention processes of workplace bullying, emotional cognitive response, and perceived organizational value of bullies (high-value bullies) was established. The purpose of the proposed empirical study is …

The Unexplored Impacts Of Communication Elements In Marketing, Can Trinh
The Unexplored Impacts Of Communication Elements In Marketing, Can Trinh
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation includes two essays that examine how the use of different marketing communication approaches influences consumers. In the first essay, I propose that the use of human silhouettes, when compared to images of attractive human models, enhances marketing communication effectiveness by reducing the extent to which consumers experience self-threat when viewing an ad. In addition, I predict this effect holds for appearance-related products only and strengthens as consumers’ level of appearance-related self-esteem decreases. Five studies reported in this essay provide converging evidence in support of these expectations.
In the second essay, I investigate into how the use of puns …

Communication About Pornography And Relationship Quality In Different-Gender Couples, Rachel Ann Augustus
Theses and Dissertations
Scholars have begun to suggest factors that explain and influence the association between pornography use and relationship outcomes but further work is still needed. Communication about pornography is one variable that may be influential but it has yet to be considered in this way. Using a dyadic sample of 713 different-gender couples, I used Actor-Partner Structural Equation Modeling to analyze associations between pornography use (male pornography use, joint pornography use and female pornography use) and relational quality (from the perspective of each partner, respectively), associations between communication about pornography and relationship quality. Communication about pornography was also considered as a …
