The Effects Of Coaching Provided Via Video-Conferencing To Caregivers Of Children With Asd, Kendra L. Antill
The Effects Of Coaching Provided Via Video-Conferencing To Caregivers Of Children With Asd, Kendra L. Antill
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The ability to communicate effectively to others is a pivotal skill necessary to get one’s needs and wants met; however, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have significant delays in communication skills. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices provide an alternative means for children with complex communication needs to express their needs and wants. Communication interventions involving AAC have been largely conducted in school and clinical settings, despite young children spending a significant amount of their time at home and in the community. Family involvement plays a critical role in improved outcomes for young children with disabilities. Recent shifts …
Curriculum Is A Map, Not A Gps: Culturally Responsive Reading Instruction In Urban Schools, Danielle Hay
Curriculum Is A Map, Not A Gps: Culturally Responsive Reading Instruction In Urban Schools, Danielle Hay
Culminating Experience Projects
With the literacy achievement gap growing, particularly in urban schools, many teachers are missing the training, tools, and support necessary to best meet the needs of their students beyond the curriculum given. This project argues the importance of sustainable teacher improvement through reflective, collaborative professional development and the support of a literacy coach. To attain the highest impact on student achievement, teachers must have a deep understanding of their students as well as evaluate their current teaching practices to identify where students may need additional support and what classroom practices may need to be adjusted. By providing students with a …
Quality Improvement Competency Development For Correctional Nursing Leaders, Angela Chandler
Quality Improvement Competency Development For Correctional Nursing Leaders, Angela Chandler
Dissertations
Nurse leaders are often promoted with little to no leadership development. Lack of development is a leading cause of turnover. Leadership development is crucial to retaining qualified leaders and the National Academy of Medicine identified that quality improvement (QI) competency development for nursing leaders is critical to improved healthcare. To invest in leader development and improve QI competence, a structured, weekly, coaching intervention was used for four consecutive weeks to reinforce QI concepts and assist in development of a QI project plan for nursing leaders. The Beliefs, Attitudes, Skills, and Confidence in Quality Improvement (BASiC- QI) instrument was used before …
Social Identity Threat: Implications For Coachability, Lauren Zervos
Social Identity Threat: Implications For Coachability, Lauren Zervos
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
A key predictor of employee performance and effective coaching interactions, coachability is defined as an individual’s willingness and ability to seek, be receptive to, and act on constructive feedback from others (Weiss & Merrigan, 2021). As such, it was predicted that there are certain social-psychological phenomena that impact one’s coachability. One phenomenon, social identity threat, referring to a threat to the self-aspect derived from membership in a particular social group or category (Steele et al., 2002; Tajfel & Turner, 2004), was used to explain the link between certain contextual and individual variables and employee coachability behaviors. Specifically, it was predicted …

Culminating Projects in Child and Family Studies
Early Intervention: Reducing the Impact of Risk Factors
The purpose of this paper was to identify some of the characteristics of children who are at an increased risk for developmental delays and therefore in need of early intervention services. This paper focused on the unique characteristics of two groups of children who are at an increased risk for developmental delays, children who are victims of abuse or neglect and children who are late talkers. Finally, this paper examined barriers to accessing early intervention services and potential solutions which may increase access to early intervention for the children and families who …

A Randomized Controlled Trial On Using Peer-Support Coaching To Improve Adherence To Online Self-Help For College Mental Health, Korena S. Klimczak
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Online self-help programs can serve as accessible mental health resources, allowing users to learn skills for improving their mental health at their own pace. The self-guided nature of these programs allows them to be cost-efficient as compared to traditional therapy and appealing to those who do not want to attend traditional therapy due to stigma or low-perceived need. However, these programs also struggle with low adherence rates, with typically only a small subset of users completing a given program in full. Coaching has been previously explored as a way to increase program adherence, adding a low-intensity human component to self-help …
The Impact Of Intensive Advising Within Trio Student Support Services On Good Academic Standing And Student Perception: An Explorative Study, Mariesha Shaw
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Challenges in bachelor’s degree attainment for disadvantaged students (e.g., low income, first generation and disabled) within higher education is a social problem. TRiO SSS, a federal program, has been implemented at a private university in Texas to meet the needs of disadvantaged students and positively influence good academic standing, which would lead to higher bachelor’s degree attainment. Intensive advising, which is holistic meetings conducted with participants to meet academic and personal needs, is one intervention utilized in the TRiO SSS program. The purpose of this study is to assess the role and influence of intensive advising by examining whether it …
Exploring The Underrepresentation Of Women Coaches In Canadian University Sport, Hayley Finn
Exploring The Underrepresentation Of Women Coaches In Canadian University Sport, Hayley Finn
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Currently, there are disproportionally few women who hold coaching positions within Canadian university sport. To investigate the gender gap, this dissertation explores the institutional practices that inform women coaches’ working realities. Applying Smith’s (1987) institutional ethnography as a mode of inquiry directed the exploration towards the everyday practices and processes that inform experience, to better understand current barriers and supports in place. In this study, particular attention is given to social relations, which Smith (2005) calls the relations of ruling that coordinate activities and experiences of individuals within organizations. Institutional ethnography aims to explicate these relations of ruling by exploring …
Principles Of Coaching For Coaching Of Principals: A Self-Directed Approach, Suzanne M. Kimball
Principles Of Coaching For Coaching Of Principals: A Self-Directed Approach, Suzanne M. Kimball
Theses and Dissertations
Research on school districts has repeatedly found that focusing on student learning and instructional leadership is a key component to effectiveness (Murphy & Hallinger, 1988; Leithwood, 2010; Anderson & Young, 2018). Districts are currently undergoing a redefinition of roles in order to specifically support principals as instructional leaders in their schools. This qualitative case study describes how one district began to develop a system for supporting principals through incorporating leadership coaching. This study shares the perspectives of principal supervisors and other district specialists as they built their own capacities to be effective coaches. The complexity of simultaneously developing skills in …
Head’S Up! Examining The Relationship Between Field Of View And Head Position In Ice Hockey Players, Kristine E. Walker
Head’S Up! Examining The Relationship Between Field Of View And Head Position In Ice Hockey Players, Kristine E. Walker
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Ice hockey is a dynamic, fast-paced game where players need to be aware of multiple factors, devoting appropriate attention to varying salient aspects to enhance performance. The term “keep your head up” is ubiquitous encouragement because if players do not, their visual field (what they can see) is compromised, performance (what they can do) decreases, and likelihood of injury increases. Head-down behaviour is problematic and is observed at all skill levels. Head position (HP) behaviour has not been quantified objectively in any sport. Through collaboration with an NHL player development coach, their practice-based knowledge and tacit experience informed the direction …
Increase In 1rm Back Squat After Abdominal Stabilizing Maneuvers, Caro Els
Increase In 1rm Back Squat After Abdominal Stabilizing Maneuvers, Caro Els
All NMU Master's Theses
Increasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) during free weight exercises can protect the lumbar spine from excess movement; a cause of lower back pain. Abdominal bracing (AB) and abdominal hollowing (AH) are two stabilizing maneuvers that increase IAP. Previous literature primarily compared AH and AB in therapy settings on bodyweight single joint movements. The effect of AB and AH during a multi-joint movement involving a maximum or near maximum external load is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of AB and AH on lower limb muscle activity and the maximum amount of external weight lifted during a …

Finding Tov: A Workbook, Playbook Sketchbook & Coaching Framework, Henry John Graf V
Doctor of Ministry
Need, Problem, Opportunity (NPO)
In telling a more accurate story about the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (TKGE), I want to guide creatives to find and live their tov.
Key Benefits
Two key benefits emerged in the process of this research. First, anchoring TKGE in tov has evangelistic impact. Nones and Dones are the fastest growing religious demographics in America. Releasing tov from morality and mediocrities addresses the theodicy and brings gospel back to TKGE. Second, people are invited and, more importantly, equipped to participate in living their miyn as tov.

The Recovery Coach: An Intentional, Relational Interventionist As A Response To The Covid-19 Incomplete Grade Trend, Melanie A. Turrano
The Recovery Coach: An Intentional, Relational Interventionist As A Response To The Covid-19 Incomplete Grade Trend, Melanie A. Turrano
Education Doctorate Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed many crises in education; fair and just grading was but one. During that tumultuous time, colleges improvised and created many “hold harmless” grading policies to provide empathy and understanding to students as well as to retain students otherwise negatively impacted by the inequities in their personal lives as well as the socioeconomic digital divide. One “due no harm” policy enacted at the community college where this study occurred was the encouragement of Incomplete (I) grades that prevented student failure in the short term, but traditionally results in long-term failure when the grade of Incomplete (I) converts …

How Principals Influence, Facilitate, And Support Instructional Coaching Programs, Nadine Y. Norris
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative, multicase study examined how principals perceived the role of instructional coaches and how they facilitated, influenced, and supported teachers’ professional learning through the instructional coaching program. Including the researcher as a participant, 16 participants from three suburban school districts—including district-level administrators, principals, instructional coaches, and teachers—engaged in semistructured interviews. This study was framed by Desimone’s core conceptual framework for professional development and Spillane’s distributed leadership model. Data analysis revealed principals viewed instructional coaches as their partners in instructional leadership and professional learning facilitators. Principals facilitated and influenced the instructional coaching program by empowering teachers, promoting collaboration, and establishing …

Discipleship Coaching For Empowering Members At Norwalk Seventh-Day Adventist Church, John W. Strehle Jr.
Professional Dissertations DMin
Problem
Based on members' feedback, there were concerns of judgmental and critical attitudes at the Norwalk Seventh-day Adventist Church. A study in 2009, “Christ’s Mission in Norwalk” by Monte Sahlin, Senior Consultant for Center for Creative Ministry, indicated a need for personal involvement in the Norwalk church in meeting the challenges of one another and the community. Yet, the judgmental and critical atmosphere was limiting the lay involvement. Likewise, the Natural Church Development (NCD) survey confirmed in 2014 that Loving Relationships was a minimum factor for the Norwalk Church. The survey showed that the community was not relying on friends …

Wholistic Stewardship Revitalization Strategy At Pueblo First Seventh-Day Adventist Church Rocky Mountain Conference, Anton Kapusi
Professional Dissertations DMin
Problem
During the last decade, I observed, in my role as pastor and director, that many churches were overcome with a low level of members-involvement throughout the Conferences I served, especially in the current local churches I pastor, reflected in spiritual discouragement, indifference, and apathy. Upon closer observation of the Pueblo First local church members' relationship and collaboration, I found that only the worship service and two Bible study groups were functioning, with about a dozen individuals in total attending. Some other ministries were also functioning, like the ACS and ACS Disaster Relief, in addition to the church building and …

The Effects Of Transformational Leadership Coaching On Player Mental Toughness, Richard Anthony James Finch
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mental health in adolescents is a growing concern, with between 10 and 20% experiencing problems globally. In this study, transformational leadership coaching was assessed to determine if it effectively reduced the prevalence of mental health issues in adolescents by assessing their mental toughness. No previous studies have examined the relationship between these variables in this population. Transformational leadership theory is the theoretical framework for this study which empowers individuals, developing confidence and producing leadership qualities. Mental toughness is a six-factor construct consisting of life and emotional control, commitment, challenge, interpersonal confidence, and confidence in one's abilities and assessed using the …

Principal Supervisors Coaching Practices For Developing School Principals' Instructional Leadership Capacity, Jamila M. Mannie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Across the United States performance expectations of principal supervisors are shifting from a focus on compliance to a focus on instructional leadership development. The problem addressed in this study was that principal supervisors were applying feedback and coaching approaches inconsistently as they addressed school principals’ growth as instructional leaders. The conceptual framework was transformational leadership, through which leaders encourage, inspire, and motivate employees to innovate and create change that can help grow and shape future academic success for the students they serve. The research questions were designed to explore how principal supervisors provide feedback and coaching to develop school principals’ …

Activating The Patient: A Nurse Led Coaching Intervention To Engage Health Information Seeking Behaviors Using The Ideal Discharge Framework And Get Well Network, Korinne Callihan
DNP Projects
Background: Cardiovascular (CV) patients are often overwhelmed by the unexpected emergence of the health condition, volume of knowledge for self-care mastery and acceptance of the responsibility for self-care upon care transition to the home setting. Low health literacy levels have been linked to poor outcomes in CV patients, requiring investigation into appropriate methods for patient education. The Get Well Network (GWN), an interactive digital patient education care plan at UK HealthCare (UKHC), is underutilized in this patient population.
Purpose: the purpose of this study is to assess the effect of a nurse-to-patient coaching intervention using the IDEAL discharge framework from …
Coaching And Training Paraprofessionals To Implement Communication Strategies In The Classroom With Students With Disabilities, Andrea Grace Antoniewicz
Coaching And Training Paraprofessionals To Implement Communication Strategies In The Classroom With Students With Disabilities, Andrea Grace Antoniewicz
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effects of a training and coaching intervention on increasing paraprofessionals use of communication strategies to increase the participation between students with disabilities and paraprofessionals. Students with CCN struggle to interact with peers and communicate appropriately, and therefore need guided instruction by adults. To encourage interactions across contexts, paraprofessionals must first learn how to use communication strategies. This skill also was chosen to extend our knowledge on coaching paraprofessionals to use different communication strategies to promote communication with students with ESN and CCN.

Authorship & Agency: Exploring Coaching As A Tool For Student Success, Allison Rebecca Lake
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
Coaching has emerged as a new, innovative practice within higher education. However, we have only begun to understand the true impact of coaching for college students. Research from individual coaching programs has shown that students who participate in coaching sessions are more likely to be retained, have higher GPAs, and engage in self-regulated learning. However, little research has been done to explore coaching from the student perspective. We do not yet understand how students utilize coaching as a tool to optimize their student experience. The goal of this project was to explore how coaching impacts the student experience and to …

Associations Between Years Of Teaching Experience And Classroom Management Practices, Responsivenss, And Acceptability To A Coaching Intervention, Nicole M. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to bridge the research-to-practice gap related to in-service supports and professional development by identifying factors associated with teacher use of evidence-based classroom management practices and responsiveness to a coaching intervention. Years of teaching experience was identified as a teacher-level intervention determinant with a strong research base in the classroom management literature; however few studies used direct observation of behavior to report difference among teacher behavior. This study used quantitative statistical methods to analyze data from a multi-year parent study investigating the effects of a coaching intervention (BEST in CLASS-Elementary) aimed at increasing the use of evidence-based practices …
Comparison Of In-Person And Virtual Coaching Of Preservice Special Education Teachers, Sydney Green
Comparison Of In-Person And Virtual Coaching Of Preservice Special Education Teachers, Sydney Green
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
Traditionally, university supervisors have provided coaching to special education preservice teachers after direct observations of sessions within the classroom. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many public school districts in the United States enforced visitor restriction policies that made face-to-face observations difficult or impossible. When faced with this challenge, university supervisors were forced to consider alternative ways to provide feedback. Many questioned whether virtual coaching was as effective as in-person coaching in increasing teacher behaviors. Presently, there are limited studies that suggest one delivery method is more effective or efficient than the other. This study used a Repeated Acquisition …
The Effects Of Autonomy-Supportive Vs Controlling Feedback On The Performance Of Novice Jugglers, Dominique Mullicane
The Effects Of Autonomy-Supportive Vs Controlling Feedback On The Performance Of Novice Jugglers, Dominique Mullicane
WWU Graduate School Collection
Coaches tend to take on many roles with their athletes (Conroy et el., 2006). In the majority of previous studies that use the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) as a theoretical framework applied to sport, athletes have preferred the autonomy-supportive coaching style over the controlling-coaching style (Amorose & Anderson-Butcher, 2015) and autonomy-support is correlated with key variables including autonomous forms of motivation, well-being, and enjoyment (e.g., Amorose & Anderson-Butcher, 2015; Felton & Jowett, 2013). Of course, many athletes want coaches who help increase their sport performance. Yet, the extremely limited research on the effects of autonomy-supportive coaching on participants’ …
