Help Seeking Behaviours Of Adolescents In Foster Care: Multiple Perspectives, Emily Marie Johnson Sep 2019

Help Seeking Behaviours Of Adolescents In Foster Care: Multiple Perspectives, Emily Marie Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents in foster care experience higher rates of mental health and behavioural problems compared to those who have never been in care (e.g., Pecora, Jensen, Romanelli, Jackson, & Ortiz, 2009). It is thus vital that they acquire help seeking skills, as this may reduce psychological distress (Ciarrochi, Deane, Wilson, & Rickwood, 2002). Given that previous research has identified unique aspects in the help seeking process of youth in care (Blower et al., 2004; Pryce, Napolitano, & Samuels, 2017; Stanley, 2007; Unrau & Grinnell, 2006), the present study sought to gain a deeper understanding of this process from multiple perspectives, and …

Social Information- Processing Variables Predict Hemoglobin A1c Trajectories In Youth With Type 1 Diabetes, Mary Elizabeth Keenan Apr 2019

Social Information- Processing Variables Predict Hemoglobin A1c Trajectories In Youth With Type 1 Diabetes, Mary Elizabeth Keenan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Predicting long-term trajectories in HbA1c can inform interventions to improve health outcomes for those with type 1 diabetes (T1D) throughout the lifespan. Higher negative attributions of friends’ reactions (NAFR) while participating in health behaviors is related to higher anticipated adherence difficulties (AAD), higher diabetes-related stress (DS), and higher HbA1c, cross-sectionally. The purpose of the present study was to determine if these social information- processing variables can predict membership into empirically derived subgroups of longitudinal HbA1c trajectories in youth with T1D. One hundred ninety-five adolescents with T1D completed the Diabetes Stress Questionnaire and the Attributions of Peer Reactions scale. HbA1cs were …

Investigation Of Intergroup Bias In Two Neuromaturationally Distinct Age Cohorts: An Erp Study, Reuven M. Hanna Jan 2019

Investigation Of Intergroup Bias In Two Neuromaturationally Distinct Age Cohorts: An Erp Study, Reuven M. Hanna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Currently, sociological investigation of adolescent behavior focuses on the intersection of biography, history, and structure to explain adolescent risk-taking, reward-seeking, impulsivity, novelty-seeking and peer-salience. However, the preponderance of the evidence points away from social ecology and to a significant neuromaturational restructuring event between the 12th and 25th years of life as the root of adolescent behavioral tendencies. As a result, sociological social psychology can benefit from engaging in basic research using neuroscience methods. The present study expands the dual systems model of brain development to account for maturational changes in the social brain network as a way to explain social …

Mama Bear Conversations: A Template Analysis Of Mothers Message Board Discussions Of Hpv Vaccination And Weight Management For Their Pre-Adolescent And Adolescent Children, Kristin Whitten Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growth of the Internet has allowed users to gather in online spaces to share thought processes and information about any number of topics, and mothers in particular have found value in these communities as they seek to navigate the rough waters of motherhood. The aim of this research is to examine three message board forum threads at Cafemom.com where mothers gather to discuss two specific health care concerns for their pre-adolescent and adolescent children: human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and weight management. In an attempt to understand how mothers gather in these spaces to discuss these important pre-adolescent and adolescent …
