Effects Of Latinx Parental Deportation On U.S. Citizen Children: A Literature Review, Rafael Bernal Dec 2019

Effects Of Latinx Parental Deportation On U.S. Citizen Children: A Literature Review, Rafael Bernal

Psychology Honors Theses

Since the past presidential elections in 2016, the topic of deportation has become one of the most discussed subject matters by policymakers. Recent reports show that Latinx immigrants make for more than ninety percent of the total number of deportations; making them, without a doubt, a targeted population. Some research on this topic has focused on the effects on family dynamics and economic stability, while others focus on children’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional changes. Many of these deportees have reported being parents of U.S. citizen children. Therefore, this thesis reviews the literature on the effects of parental deportation in U.S. …

Hybrid Entrepreneurs’ Intention To Transition To Full Entrepreneurship: A Career Approach, Simoon Cannon Dec 2019

Hybrid Entrepreneurs’ Intention To Transition To Full Entrepreneurship: A Career Approach, Simoon Cannon

Business Administration Dissertations

Entrepreneurship research has examined the process of becoming an entrepreneur and the variables that predict this transition. Recent research has found that many entrepreneurs do not immediately jump into being full entrepreneurs but may rather transition into that state via a hybrid status in which they are employed elsewhere while working on an entrepreneurial venture. Some hybrid entrepreneurs fully intend to make that transition to full entrepreneurship, while others remain in their hybrid status and have no such intention. It is important to investigate what factors influence hybrid entrepreneurs to either remain in a hybrid status or become full entrepreneurs. …

Social Networks, Supportive Behaviors, And Perceived Social Support As Predictors Of Drug Court Completion, Tasha M. Ramirez Dec 2019

Social Networks, Supportive Behaviors, And Perceived Social Support As Predictors Of Drug Court Completion, Tasha M. Ramirez

AYSPS Masters Theses

Purpose: The understanding of sociodemographic variables and drug court completion is well documented in the drug court literature, but the application of theoretical predictors is often neglected, leading to a gap in theory and practice. To fill this gap, this study examined the utility of social support theory in explaining the differences between those who complete the drug court program and those who fail to do so. Using Cohen’s definition, social support was conceptualized as social networks, supportive behaviors, and perceived support.

Methods: Participant survey data and drug court data from the National Institute of Justice’s Multi-Site Adult …

Don Quixote: Freedom Of Interpretation Without Boundaries, Fabienne Payoute Dec 2019

Don Quixote: Freedom Of Interpretation Without Boundaries, Fabienne Payoute

World Languages and Cultures Theses

The objective of this thesis is to focus on techniques devised by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra to create several narratives around reality and the imagination. This thesis identifies these narratives, isolates them, and studies their functions within a larger narrative aim: the creation of the first modern novel. Cervantes uses different perspectives within a main plot and several subplots to create a complex narrative. This complexity is achieved by the creation of stories within stories, recounting the adventures of Don Quixote through different authorial voices, sources and times, as well as doppelgangers, pseudonyms, and an alter-ego. All the different narratives …

Criminalizing The School: An Investigation Of How Current School Safety And Disciplinary Policies Contribute To The Overrepresentation Of Traditionally Marginalized Students Within The Criminal Justice System, Dia Clark Dec 2019

Criminalizing The School: An Investigation Of How Current School Safety And Disciplinary Policies Contribute To The Overrepresentation Of Traditionally Marginalized Students Within The Criminal Justice System, Dia Clark

Educational Policy Studies Dissertations

This study focuses on the nature of school discipline policies and their impact on student sentiments about how they are viewed by school staff. The study follows the research to illustrate a connection between unremitting surveillance and discipline and corresponding higher levels of violence, drop-out rates, and student, as well as teacher, dissatisfaction. The study concludes that while violence must be met with consequences, too often the perception of potential student violence or criminal behaviors is influenced by racial bias. I contend that hostile school environments in which trust is lacking between school staff and students develops poor student self-perceptions …

Residential Mobility, Parental Stress, & Parenting, Chelsea Barrows Dec 2019

Residential Mobility, Parental Stress, & Parenting, Chelsea Barrows

Psychology Theses

The relationship between residential mobility, parental stress, and parenting is explored using a model based on the Family Stress Model. The roles of social support within this model are also explored. A secondary data analysis of the Fragile Families Child Wellbeing Study was conducted, providing a sample size of 4,300 families. The analyses did not support the indirect relationships hypothesized based on the FSM or stress buffering theories. However, residential mobility and parental stress had a direct effect on harsh parenting behaviors. Residential mobility was also found to reduce social support.

Associations Between Pupillary Response Patterns To Emotional Faces And Self-Reported Social Anxiety, Mary Fernandes Dec 2019

Associations Between Pupillary Response Patterns To Emotional Faces And Self-Reported Social Anxiety, Mary Fernandes

Psychology Theses

The present study examined associations between self-reported social anxiety (SA) and patterns of pupillary response to emotional faces that provided feedback to college student participants (n = 59) about their performance on a reaction time task. I hypothesized that self-reported SA would predict pupil dilation profile (peak, duration, and latency) in response to feedback stimuli of varying intensities (i.e., low vs. high intensity happy and angry). Results showed no evidence of significant associations between peak and sustained pupil diameter measures and SA; however, at 0.5 seconds post-stimulus onset, SA and pupil diameter were negatively associated, such that smaller pupil diameter …

Comparative Analysis Of Water Storage Dynamics And Storage-Discharge Relations Among Variably Urbanized Catchments Within South River Watershed, Dekalb County, Ga, Eimienwanlan Ibhagui

Geosciences Theses

The study of watershed storage is critical for understanding watershed hydrologic functions, ecosystem dynamics, and biogeochemical processes. However, few studies have quantified how much water lies in the subsurface in urban watersheds. In this study, dynamic storage was estimated, and storage-discharge relations evaluated in Atlanta, GA among variably urbanized watersheds. Streamflow data from 2012-2016 was utilized and the simple dynamical systems model employed. Dynamic storage values in these watersheds are small: ~3mm to ~9mm. The small dynamic storage values observed across the watersheds are linked to watershed urbanization; however, other subsurface properties of the watersheds may also account for this …

World Languages and Cultures Theses

The Effect Of Acute Heavy Metal (Cu And Cd) Toxicity On Ros Generation, Apoptosis, And Intracellular Glutathione Levels In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jesse Gardner Dec 2019

The Effect Of Acute Heavy Metal (Cu And Cd) Toxicity On Ros Generation, Apoptosis, And Intracellular Glutathione Levels In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jesse Gardner

Biology Theses

Heavy metal contamination is of growing concern as industrialization causes increasing levels to be released into the environment affecting all organisms. Cellular damage and coping mechanisms due to heavy metal toxicity vary depending upon the species of metal and organisms exposed. It is assumed that cellular damage can be attributed to the destructive effects of metal-induced ROS production, which is ameliorated, by the non-protein tripeptide glutathione, cycling between reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG). We investigate the effects of acute cadmium and copper treatment on Saccharomyces cerevisiae and determine some of the immediate cellular responses to the exposure of these metals …

Shock And The Poststructural In Watt And Murphy, Emily B. Davis Dec 2019

Shock And The Poststructural In Watt And Murphy, Emily B. Davis

English Theses

In Samuel Beckett’s early novel Watt, a servant’s stay in a manor house becomes the site of a great confrontation with the origins and limits of meaning. Murphy and Watt wearily engage with the Enlightenment rationalism that courses through many of his modernist contemporaries, only to subvert those ideas via processes of philosophical negation. This thesis argues that the novels’ negative, even abject gaze into the heart of anti-foundational truth – that reality is bound by subjectivity, and language is but a hollow vessel – leads to regressive disorder of speech and perception. A theoretical concept of shock …

Creative Industries: Behind The Scenes Inequalities, Sierra C. Nicely Dec 2019

Creative Industries: Behind The Scenes Inequalities, Sierra C. Nicely

Sociology Theses

Film has been a major influence since its creation in the early 20th century. Women have always been involved in the creation of film as a cultural product. However, they have rarely been given positions of power in major film productions. Using qualitative approaches, I examine the different ways in which men and women directors approach creating film. I examine 20 films, half were directed by men and half by women. I selected the twenty films out of two movie genres: Action and Romantic Comedy. These genres were chosen because of their very gendered marketing. My focus was on the …

Abundance And Distribution Of Invasive Woody Shrub Mahonia Bealei In The Metropolitan Atlanta Area, Adam W. Greim

Geosciences Theses

Woody invasive plants are a pernicious threat to the structure and function of ecosystems worldwide. However, due to the growing number of invasive species and the variable timeline of invasion, many invasive plants are unrecognized or underreported, leading to long-term ecological damage that is beyond the capability of cost-efficient management programs. Mahonia bealei is a woody shrub native to China that is invading the forests of the southeastern U.S. and is likely underreported. This study identified and mapped all occurrences of Mahonia bealei across 40 woodlots throughout DeKalb County, Georgia, and analyzed vital indicators in the habitats that may promote …

Computational Study On Protein Arginine Methyl-Transferases (Prmts), Zhenyu Wang Dec 2019

Computational Study On Protein Arginine Methyl-Transferases (Prmts), Zhenyu Wang

Chemistry Theses

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) are essential epigenetic players in living cells. The dysregulation of PRMTs is closely related to many diseases, including cancer. Based on previously reported PRMT1 inhibitors bearing the diamidine pharmacophore, a combinatorial high throughput screening strategy led to compound K313, which possesses a biochemical IC50 value of 0.84 µM against PRMT1.

Histone code is the post-translational modification patterns appear at histone, which regulates transcription and many other cellular events. H4R3 is one of the important substrates for both PRMT1 and PRMT5. PRMTs are important in establishing histone code. They are also regulated by the histone code. In …

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence And Current Signals From Metal Nanoclusters And Their Surface Assemblies By Prototype Tertiary Amines, Meijun Yi

Chemistry Theses

Interactions between metal nanoclusters and tertiary amine compounds are demonstrated to generate and strengthen the near infrared electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and current signals upon electrode activation. The catalytic effects of aqueous soluble gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) on the oxidation of prototype tertiary amine are firstly established in solution measurements with the materials system of Au22 lipoic acid (Au-LA) nanoclusters and a common pH buffer HEPES. The near IR ECL and current signals are correlated by potential scanning and step methods under systematic varied HEPES and nanocluster concentrations. Strategies to deposit the nanoclusters on electrode surface are developed to improve the …

World Languages and Cultures Theses

Validation Of A Modified Balloon Analogue Risk Task And The Role Of Hormones On Risk Behavior In Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus Apella), Olivia Tomeo Dec 2019

Validation Of A Modified Balloon Analogue Risk Task And The Role Of Hormones On Risk Behavior In Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus Apella), Olivia Tomeo

Psychology Theses

Risk-taking behavior often has uncertain outcomes, which can sometimes be harmful. However, risk behavior presumably evolved due to its advantageousness. A comparative approach can help us better understand the evolution of risky decision-making and its underlying mechanisms. Literature suggests that increased risk-taking is associated with elevated testosterone levels, but this finding is inconsistent. Other literature suggests that cortisol influences the relationship between testosterone and risk-taking behavior. The Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) is a standardized task that assesses risk-taking behavior in humans. I created a modified BART for standardized assessment of risk-taking behavior in adults, children, and nonhuman primates. The …

Residential Mobility In The Late Pre-Hispanic Osmore Drainage: Isotopic Analyses Of Hair From The Estuquiña, Danielle E. Carmody

Anthropology Theses

I examine, through isotopic analyses, individual and regional interactions in Peru following the collapse of the large polity, Tiwanaku. After its collapse in the 11th century, former territories experienced violent instability, as new communities formed during the Late Intermediate Period, or LIP (1000-1400s AD). I analyze naturally mummified human hair from the later LIP Estuquiña (1250-1470s AD) in the Moquegua Valley of southern Peru to examine patterns of regional mobility in the aftermath of political fragmentation. Reconstructing residential mobility through isotope analyses is methodologically established, and has been instrumental in understanding mobility, exchange, colonization, and regional interactions during Tiwanaku’s height. …

Anthropology Theses

To determine whether the size and shape of Parapapio molars are similar to closely related cercopithecid taxa including Cercocebus and Papio and different from more distantly related Colobus, three first permanent maxillary molar molds of Parapapio (MP77 broomi, MP221 whitei, and MP223 whitei) were compared to Cercocebus agilis (n = 11), Papio anubis (n = 10) and Colobus angolensis (n = 11) using buccolingual and mesiodistal lengths, occlusal area, and elliptical Fourier analysis. PC1, accounting for 35% of the variance, polarizes Parapapio and Colobus at opposite extremes from the other taxa, whereas PC2, explaining 19.76%, separates …

Fully Automated Enzymatic Synthesis Of Glycans, Jiabin Zhang Dec 2019

Fully Automated Enzymatic Synthesis Of Glycans, Jiabin Zhang

Chemistry Dissertations

Oligosaccharides, together with oligonucleotides and oligopeptides, comprise the three major classes of natural biopolymers. Automated systems for oligonucleotide and oligopeptide synthesis have significantly advanced developments in biological science by allowing non-specialists to rapidly and easily access these biopolymers. Researchers have endeavored for decades to develop a comparable general automated system to synthesize oligosaccharides. Such a system would have a revolutionary impact on the understanding of the roles of glycans in biological systems. The main challenge to achieving automated synthesis is the lack of general synthetic methods for routine synthesis of glycans. Currently, the two main methods to access homogeneous glycans …

Profiling Ubiquitin Chain Specificity And Topology Using Di-Ubiquitin Probes, Han Zhou Dec 2019

Profiling Ubiquitin Chain Specificity And Topology Using Di-Ubiquitin Probes, Han Zhou

Chemistry Dissertations

Ubiquitin chains of specific linkages are assembled by ubiquitin conjugating enzymes (E2s) and ubiquitin ligases (E3s) to encode unique signals in the cell. Nevertheless, ubiquitin chains are often trimmed by deubiquitinases to reverse encoded signals. Given that there are altogether eight linkage types of polyubiquitin chains, how E2s, E3s and DUBs mediate ubiquitin chains in a linkage-specific manner is still an open question. In this thesis, an interdisciplinary approach including organic synthesis, genetic code expansion, protein engineering has been investigated to stress this intriguing question. To this end, linkage-specific diUB featuring a thiol group embedded near the isopeptide bond site …

Public Health Theses

INTRODUCTION: The opioid epidemic continues to be a major public health issue across the United States. From 2010 – 2018 the rate of opioid overdose death in the state of Georgia increased more than 70%. Until 2013 prescription opioids were the driving force of this increase, although in recent years illicit opioids such as heroin and fentanyl have been rapidly increasing. The literature has demonstrated nationally that certain occupations that have an increased risk of injury also have a higher risk of opioid-involved death. Occupational data for the state of Georgia has never been analyzed for a potential relationship with …
