Effects Of Wave Action On The Structure Of Fish Assemblages Across An Exposure Gradient, Lauren Liddon Aug 2017

Effects Of Wave Action On The Structure Of Fish Assemblages Across An Exposure Gradient, Lauren Liddon

Master's Theses

Disturbance affects the function and diversity of ecosystems. Increased wave exposure to salt marsh can disturb sediments and cause a loss of habitat. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of increased wave exposure on diversity, abundance, and functional ecology of estuarine fishes. If increased wave exposure is acting as a disturbance to these habitats, ecological theory (Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis) predicts that diversity will peak at intermediate frequencies and intensities of disturbance. Fish were sampled from 10 sites monthly for 6 years. The sites were assigned to different exposure categories (Open, Intermediate, and Sheltered) using an exposure …

Cache Valley Resident Exposure To Pm2.5, Kristina Krepinski Jul 2017

Cache Valley Resident Exposure To Pm2.5, Kristina Krepinski

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Air pollution poses one of the largest environmental risks to human health, and greatly contributes to increased mortality within populations. Of the different types of pollutants, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has the most adverse health effects. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 is known to have serious health outcomes; however, evidence has indicated that even short-term exposure to moderate concentrations of PM2.5 is detrimental to human health. While PM2.5 does contribute to various respiratory conditions by affecting lung function, it also significantly affects the cardiovascular system. Elevated PM2.5 exposure increases risk for cardiovascular disease, congestive heart …

Vietnam Veterans And Illicit Drug Use, Joyce Roberts Jun 2017

Vietnam Veterans And Illicit Drug Use, Joyce Roberts

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This study examined the correlation between Vietnam veterans and dependency to illicit drugs, due to their exposure and accessibility during their deployment in Vietnam. This study consisted of a sample size of 58 respondents to a survey that was disbursed throughout 2 agencies that comprise of Vietnam veterans. The survey design was implemented to ensure the consistency and accuracy of the quantitative data. Furthermore, this study included a Chi-square test to determine relevance and implications to micro social work practices. As expected, there was a positively significant statistical relationship between the exposure and accessibility that some Vietnam veterans experienced during their …

Domestic Violence: How To Treat The Unseen Victims, Sarah Callahan May 2017

Domestic Violence: How To Treat The Unseen Victims, Sarah Callahan

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

Domestic violence is something that impacts families worldwide. One in three women in the US will experience domestic violence in their lifetime (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012); given this statistic, children will inadvertently be exposed to domestic violence as a result. Young children, whom are likely in the home with their parents, are highly vulnerable to domestic violence exposure, and the impacts that it has on mental health functioning. This qualitative research project focused on the question “What are the best methods of practice for working with children aged 2-6 who have been exposed to domestic violence and …

Bioaerosol Exposures From Three Utah Cattle Operations, Clark Evans Apr 2017

Bioaerosol Exposures From Three Utah Cattle Operations, Clark Evans

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Bioaerosol is a generic term used to describe dusts that are produced by and or contain biological material. These dusts can potentially contain the following hazardous agents; bacteria, viruses, bacterial endotoxins, and/or mycotoxins from mold spores. Respiratory inflammation, allergies, cancers, and infectious diseases can occur from exposure to a variety of bioaerosol agents. Controlling bioaerosol exposures is very complicated due to the limited amount of research available and because there are no established regulatory or authoritative exposure limits.

Three cattle operations, two beef and one Dairy, in Utah were investigated to establish exposure profiles of the full-time employees that directly …

The Relationship Between Near Shore Hardbottom Exposure And Benthic Community Composition And Distribution In Palm Beach County, Fl, Kristen A. Cumming Mar 2017

The Relationship Between Near Shore Hardbottom Exposure And Benthic Community Composition And Distribution In Palm Beach County, Fl, Kristen A. Cumming

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Anthropogenic changes to the landscape, storm events and sea level rise are contributing to the erosion of beaches leading to an increase of the sediment load in near shore marine environments. Palm Beach, Florida is host to unique near shore hardbottom habitats. These areas are distinct from the vast expanses of surrounding sediments and play and important role of habitat and shelter for many different species. In this study, remotely sensed images from 2000-2015 were used to look at the movement of sediment and how it contributes to exposure rates of near shore hardbottom habitats in Palm Beach, Florida and …

Intra-Exposure Levels Of Anxious Arousal In A Lab-Based Exposure Intervention For Fear Of Public Speaking, Matteo Bugatti Jan 2017

Intra-Exposure Levels Of Anxious Arousal In A Lab-Based Exposure Intervention For Fear Of Public Speaking, Matteo Bugatti

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Background. Exposure therapy is effective for addressing social anxiety and public speaking fears, yet there are differences in suggested exposure strategies among empirically supported, manualized treatments. Manualized exposure strategies differ in the relative theoretical emphasis that underpins the specific procedural approach. Some approaches rely more heavily on the principle of habituation and formal cognitive restructuring; alternative approaches emphasize inhibitory learning and the individual's response to his/her own negative emotions, while promoting present-focused awareness. Innovative process methods can shed light on the similarities and differences between these approaches. Objectives. The goal of this study was to examine differences in anxious arousal …

Risk Parameters And Assessment Of Dietary Dsrna Exposure In Folsomia Candida, Jeffrey Edward Noland Jan 2017

Risk Parameters And Assessment Of Dietary Dsrna Exposure In Folsomia Candida, Jeffrey Edward Noland

Theses and Dissertations--Entomology

Assessing the risk of transgenic crop products is essential when determining the safety of a crop for deregulation and commercialization. The Organization of Economic and Cooperative Development (OECD), International Standards Organization (ISO), and governmental regulatory agencies require a battery of tests to demonstrate the safety of a GM product against several surrogate species of organisms that perform various ecosystem services. Assays are performed using toxicology methods established for pesticides. These methods have been applied to testing the safety, specificity and fate of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry protein toxins engineered into crop plants and information exists on the effects on non-target …

Identifying And Reducing Technological Contributions To End-User Vulnerability, Lindsay J. Robertson Jan 2017

Identifying And Reducing Technological Contributions To End-User Vulnerability, Lindsay J. Robertson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

Essential life-needs are commonly supplied to end-users by complex and heterogeneous technological systems that have many potential failure-points and hence contribute vulnerability. The vulnerabilities under consideration in this study are those arising from the length and complexity of the technological system used to bring these life-needs to the end-user. Public awareness of dependence is evidenced at the corporate and national level by the expenditure of time and effort on infrastructure hardening, and at the individual level by a range of self-sufficiency and personal preparedness movements. Although the awareness of such dependence is commonly described using a term such as vulnerability, …
