Geographies Of Displacement: The Evolution Of The Champ De Mars Settlement In Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Austin Swift

Open Access Theses

On the 12th of January 2010, a massive earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. One of the worst natural disasters to ever strike the Western Hemisphere, the capital of Port-au-Prince was severely damaged. In the aftermath of the earthquake, internally displaced people (IDPs) sought refuge by erecting hundreds of informal camps throughout the city. At the epicenter of this cataclysmic event was the burgeoning Champ de Mars tent city. Located in central Port-au-Prince, the Champ de Mars quickly transitioned from green space to slum. For two years, the eleven sites would emphasize patterns of insecurity and urban transition in …

Program Development For Occupational Therapy Education In Haiti: Strategic Planning And Case Statement, Janet O'Flynn

Doctor of Occupational Therapy Doctoral Projects

The profession of occupational therapy is not yet recognized in Haiti. An opportunity opened in 2012 to start professional educational programs in occupational therapy and physical therapy at a Haitian university. Operational planning, strategic planning, and fundraising began informally. In 2015 a formal planning process was held. The method for this case study was program development, using mission and vision, SWOC analysis, and goal setting. A Logic Model was used for writing a case statement and letters of inquiry for grant funds. Conclusions were that fundraising work was crucially important, flexibility was needed to respond to unpredictable external factors, and …

Dominican And Haitian Relations: Changing Constitutions And Migrant Rights, Tiffany Busch May 2015

Dominican And Haitian Relations: Changing Constitutions And Migrant Rights, Tiffany Busch

Honors Projects

The Dominican Republic and Haiti share the island of Hispaniola. The two nations’ shared history can best be described as tumultuous. The French and Spanish long fought for control over the small island before ultimately becoming two independent nations. Tensions still exist between the nations. The Dominican Republic, operating under antihaitianismo, fears that the influx of Haitian people will be detrimental to the country’s economic and cultural well-being. As a result, deportations have increased. Human Rights Watch has condemned the Dominican Republic for its unethical deportation methods. Moreover, the Dominican Republic enacted a new constitution in 2010 with more …

Language (Re)Appropriation In The Francophone Caribbean Region: Challenges And Perspectives, Marky Jean-Pierre Apr 2015

Language (Re)Appropriation In The Francophone Caribbean Region: Challenges And Perspectives, Marky Jean-Pierre

Doctoral Dissertations

The development of the subject depends on whether the subject re-appropriates his/her creation or remains alienated by it. In Material Culture and Mass Consumption. Daniel Miller describes the challenges and perspectives for the subject to re-appropriate his/her creation and what happens when he or she remains alienated by it. Miller combines the work of Hegel, Marx, Simmel, and Munn in an attempt to frame his theory of culture. The key concept that reverberates throughout Miller’s reflection on Hegel, Marx, Simmel, and Munn is his notion of “objectification;” however, an analysis of his work suggests that perhaps Miller’s greatest achievement …

Empowerment Unit Plan For Haitian Restavek Children, Ashley Craig Jan 2015

Empowerment Unit Plan For Haitian Restavek Children, Ashley Craig

HIM 1990-2015

Restavek, French for "one who stays with", is a word used to describe child slaves in Haiti. These children are given away by their parents at a young age because of financial hardships or for hopes of life in the urban areas to be better than life in the rural areas. The Restaveks, far from their family and anyone they know, end up as slaves without access to education, healthcare, and sometimes food. As a result, many of these children suffer from malnutrition, abuse, and illnesses. The majority of Restaveks are young girls. In the communities, they are shunned and …

Putting Government In Its Place: Cultural Racism, Sentiment, And Neoliberalism In Contemporary United States Responses To Natural Disasters Abroad, Corinne Wohlford Mason Jan 2015

Putting Government In Its Place: Cultural Racism, Sentiment, And Neoliberalism In Contemporary United States Responses To Natural Disasters Abroad, Corinne Wohlford Mason

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

The reasons for American distrust of government are multiple, and enumerating them is beyond the scope of this project. However, this distrust in the government supports the values of neoliberalism, especially the ideal of limited government. Rhetorically separating government and sentiment has serious effects on what kinds of change are possible in a world where there are no sanctuaries from the effects of the free market. Relegating government to the role of supporting the free market is loss for vulnerable people—especially black people—everywhere. Yet doing so makes Americans feel good about themselves. As Obama claimed in his Newsweek piece, indeed, …

Resipwosite, Benefis Mityel And Solidarite: A Case Study Of Global Service Learning Partnerships In Post-Earthquake Ayiti, Jessica Darnell Murphy

Dissertations

The purpose of this case study was to study select long-term successive partnerships between American universities of the Haiti Compact and various non-government organizations working in Ayiti (Haiti) despite contextual tensions of historic relations between Ayiti and the West, disparate global status of Ayiti and the United States of America, and the unprecedented impact of the 2010 earthquake in Ayiti and subsequent response from U.S. institutions of higher education. The Haiti Compact was a unique case for study due to its formation (1) as a resource of aggregated American student volunteerism and activism to be used in assistance to Ayisyen …

Effectiveness Of An Artisanal Mcphail Trap For Mass Trapping Tephritid Fruit Flies In Haiti, Fractyl Mertilus

LSU Master's Theses

Three field experiments were conducted in a mango orchard in Croix-des-bouquets (Haïti) to develop an effective artisanal McPhail trap, less expensive than the commercial traps, for mass trapping Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) and Anastrepha suspensa (Loew). A field trial conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of two newly made artisanal trap models (AT1 and AT2) with the commercial McPhail trap (MP) demonstrated that the artisanal traps yielded similar results in the average number of fruit flies caught (8.9±2.6, 13±2.9, and 16±4.1 respectively). Moreover, the cost-efficacy ratio was a lot higher in the artisanal trap models (AT1: 0.42 $ per flies caught, AT2: …

American Food Aid: Disruption And Development In Haiti, Kaitlyn Vitez

UVM Honors College Senior Theses

In this senior thesis, the state of American foreign aid in the form of food aid is evaluated for its effectiveness, as well as its impacts on the Haitian state, people, and food system. A historical context is offered to map changes to Haitian food production and foreign intervention into the Haitian food market and agricultural sector. From this research, I detail the decision making processes in food aid distribution, and gain insight into the US government’s own evaluations into the work it has done to alleviate global food insecurity. The discussion of Haiti's future also talks about common global …

Factors Influencing Sustainable Cocoa Production In Northern Haiti, Wegbert Chery Jan 2015

Factors Influencing Sustainable Cocoa Production In Northern Haiti, Wegbert Chery

LSU Master's Theses

Given the environmental concerns on the one hand, especially soil erosion and deforestation, and the hope that the global cocoa market offers on the other hand, cocoa production is a potential candidate to simultaneously guarantee a competitive return to investment for farmers in northern Haiti and mitigate the negative environmental impact of farming practices. It becomes crucial for policy makers and investors to know and understand the key elements of the decision to produce cocoa. Though there has been substantial effort to improve the cocoa sector in Haiti, cocoa production systems in Haiti lag behind in the area of sustainability. …
