Fan Perceptions Of Selling Alcoholic Beverages At A College Football Stadium, Danielle E. Hennessy Dec 2015

Fan Perceptions Of Selling Alcoholic Beverages At A College Football Stadium, Danielle E. Hennessy

Honors Theses

Consuming alcohol while watching a sporting event has become a tradition within the sport commnnity. Almost one in ten sports fans leave major league stadiums with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, with 40% of spectators consuming alcohol during the game (Lopatto, 2011). Due to this tradition, many colleges and universities have struggled to answer the question, should alcohol be sold at our athletic events? To answer this question research has been done on many factors including binge drinking, violence and safety, alcohol control policies, tailgating and attendance.

Exposure Of Neonatal Rats To Alcohol Has Differential Effects On Cytokine Levels In The Cerebellum And Hippocampus : Potential Role Of Microglia And Astrocytes, Lauren Topper Dec 2015

Exposure Of Neonatal Rats To Alcohol Has Differential Effects On Cytokine Levels In The Cerebellum And Hippocampus : Potential Role Of Microglia And Astrocytes, Lauren Topper

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Drinking during pregnancy can result in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), an umbrella term that encompasses a wide array of symptoms ranging from neurocognitive deficits to physical malformations. The mechanism for FASD is not yet fully understood, however recently, activation of the neuroimmune system has been suggested to play a role. Neuroinflammation, characterized by increased pro-inflammatory cytokine production and glial cell activation, has been observed following exposure to alcohol during the neonatal period. Furthermore, neuroimmune activation has been implicated in alcohol-induced neuronal death and/or damage. The studies herein investigate several components of the relationship between neuronal damage following developmental alcohol …

Detecting At-Risk Drinking In University Primary Care: Validity Of The Audit-C, Clare Elizabeth Campbell Dec 2015

Detecting At-Risk Drinking In University Primary Care: Validity Of The Audit-C, Clare Elizabeth Campbell

Dissertations - ALL

Research has shown that primary care physicians are more likely to discuss alcohol use with their patients when brief screens are routinely administered. One such screen, the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C; Bush, Kivlahan, McDonnell, Fihn, & Bradley, 1998), has yet to be validated for detecting at-risk alcohol consumption and negative drinking consequences among students presenting to a university student health service for primary care. Accordingly, the proposed study aimed to assess the construct validity of the AUDIT-C among students (N = 387) recruited from Syracuse University's University Health Service (UHS). Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analyses were used to …

Attentional Bias In Moderate And Heavy College Drinkers: An Eye-Tracking Study, Ansley Victoria Geno Nov 2015

Attentional Bias In Moderate And Heavy College Drinkers: An Eye-Tracking Study, Ansley Victoria Geno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral economic research regarding alcohol use aims to understand how substance use becomes favored over other rewarding non-substance activities (Meshesha, Dennhardt, & Murphy, 2014). The present study investigated attentional bias as an objective index of the relative valuation of substance-related rewards versus substance-free rewards among college students categorized as either heavy or moderate drinkers. The primary goal of this study was to assess the relative valuation of alcohol-related and alcohol-free rewards using multiple behavioral methods, such as attentional bias for alcohol measured via eye-tracking device, subjective ratings of the pleasantness of alcohol-related and alcohol-free stimuli, and measurement of recent activit …

Behavioral And Neural Mechanisms Of Impulsive Choice, Jesse Mcclure Nov 2015

Behavioral And Neural Mechanisms Of Impulsive Choice, Jesse Mcclure

Doctoral Dissertations

Impulsive choice is defined as the preference for a small immediate reward over a larger delayed reward. Individual variablity in impulsive choice correlates with many socially relevant behaviors. Although forms of impulsive choice have been studied in both behavioral ecology and psychology, the exchange of knowledge between these fields is just beginning. Drawing from both of these fields will improve our research methods allowing for a more detailed understanding of this complex behavior. Existing tasks to measure impulsive choice conflate the delay and quantity of the reward. To address this, I have drawn from foraging research to establish a method …

Effect Of Cultural Background And Training On Stigmatized Attitudes Among Healthcare Professionals: A Randomized Study Of Medical Students’ Attitude And Behaviors Toward Alcohol Dependent Individuals In The Middle East, Salman Alzayani

Doctoral Dissertations

Background The consumption of alcohol or drugs, as well as substance dependence do exist in the Middle East despite the religious, social and cultural constraints in the region. Stigma seems to exist in every area of life for individuals with mental illness and represents a major barrier to effective rehabilitation and reintegration of these patients. Aim To better understand the reasons behind stigmatizing attitudes toward persons with alcohol dependence and to evaluate the role of stigma in medical diagnosis and care. Methods The study consisted of two phases; Phase 1 examined whether medical students demonstrate stigmatized attitudes according to the …

Social Network Influences And College Student Drinking, Adrienne Borders Sep 2015

Social Network Influences And College Student Drinking, Adrienne Borders

Psychology ETDs

Heavy drinking among college students inhibits academic success and poses serious risks to others in the form of alcohol-related violence, sexual assaults, and automobile accidents (Hingson, 2010). Furthermore, data have indicated an increasing rate of heavy drinking among college students (Hingson, 2010; NIAAA, 2002; NIAAA, 2007). Research suggests that parents maintain ongoing influence on young adult alcohol use during the transition to college, even in the face of potentially negative influence from peers and perceived drinking norms. However, the variables used to demonstrate this have varied widely. This study aimed to develop a cohesive model of parent and peer influences …

Discrimination, Substance Use, And Cultural Buffers Among Native American College Students, Brenna L. Greenfield Sep 2015

Discrimination, Substance Use, And Cultural Buffers Among Native American College Students, Brenna L. Greenfield

Psychology ETDs

The negative effects of racial discrimination and microaggressions on health have been consistently documented, but only a handful of studies have examined this topic among Native Americans. The goal of this study was to test the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model (Walters, Simoni, & Evans-Campbell, 2002) among Native American college students attending two post-secondary institutions in the Southwestern United States. It was hypothesized that microaggressions would be positively related to substance use, and that cultural factors would attenuate the strength of this relationship. A total of 347 participants (65% female) completed a one-time online survey that included the Microaggressions Scale, the Actualization …

Zebrafish And Conditioned Place Preference: A Translational Model Of Drug Reward, Adam Douglas Collier Aug 2015

Zebrafish And Conditioned Place Preference: A Translational Model Of Drug Reward, Adam Douglas Collier

Master's Theses

Addiction and substance abuse commonly lead to negative outcomes such damaged health, domestic violence, child abuse, failure in school, and loss of employment. In the United States, hundreds of billions of dollars accrue annually in costs associated with healthcare, crime and lost productivity due to addiction. Efficacious treatments remain few in number, the development of which will be facilitated by comprehension of environmental, genetic, pharmacological and neurobiological mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of addiction. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has recently gained popularity as a model organism of complex brain disorders (e.g., substance use disorder). Behavioral quantification within the conditioned place …

The Effects Of Alcohol On The Interpretation Of Social And Emotional Cues: A Field Study Of College Student Drinking, Emotion Recognition, And Perceptions Of A Hypothetical Sexual Assault, Alexander James Melkonian

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol use and abuse among emerging adults is highly correlated with increased risk for sexual victimization. Alcohol myopia theory has been used to explain impairments in Social information processing resulting in decreased attention to environmental Social cues including risk factors for sexual assault as well as facial emotional recognition. Those with deficits in Social information processing may be at particular risk for the misperception of salient risk factors for sexual assault by victims, perpetrators, and bystanders when intoxicated. In this naturalistic field study, participants who had been consuming alcohol were recruited to engage in tasks of facial emotion recognition and …

The Effects Of Descriptive And Injunctive Peer Norms On Young Adult Alcohol Use, Samantha Paige Detore May 2015

The Effects Of Descriptive And Injunctive Peer Norms On Young Adult Alcohol Use, Samantha Paige Detore

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Descriptive peer norms refer to one’s perception of their peer’s alcohol use, while injunctive peer norms refer to one’s perception of their peer’s approval of alcohol use. Current literature has found that both norms are positively associated with alcohol use among young adults, but it remains unknown whether one norm has a greater influence on alcohol use than the other. The purpose of the current study was to explore this gap in the literature and examine the relative influence of both descriptive and injunctive norms on alcohol consumption. One hundred Caucasian, moderate-heavy drinking young adults completed a baseline questionnaire assessing …

Motivational Interviewing In Primary Care And General Health Care Settings: A Meta-Analysis, Michele Kathryn Olson May 2015

Motivational Interviewing In Primary Care And General Health Care Settings: A Meta-Analysis, Michele Kathryn Olson

Theses and Dissertations

The rate of mortality and morbidity due to alcohol consumption warrants a comprehensive and evidence-based investigation exploring the efficacy of behavioral interventions within a general health care setting as a means of alcohol reduction. A particular type of intervention, known as Motivational Interviewing (MI; Miller, 1983) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET; Miller, Sovereign, & Krege, 1988), both of which have seen surge in popularity, merits further inspection. Through electronic database searching, hand searching previous meta-analyses and systematic reviews, and searching the Motivational Network of Trainers bibliographic resource, 33 randomized controlled trials were located isolating the effect of motivational interviewing in …

Cue Reactivity To Images Of Alcohol: Creation Of A Standardized Picture Set, Kelsey M. Krueger May 2015

Cue Reactivity To Images Of Alcohol: Creation Of A Standardized Picture Set, Kelsey M. Krueger

Theses - ALL

To study alcohol approach inclinations in a laboratory setting, researchers commonly use cue reactivity paradigms involving presentation of alcohol cues and measurement of responses. However, available picture sets present potential limitations due to their multidimensional nature. A critical task was to develop a set of standardized images without brand labels, actors, or settings, in order to gain a clearer assessment of college students’ reactions to alcohol, and alcohol alone, while minimizing contextual influences. In Study 1, a set of images with satisfactory reliability was created. To replicate and expand upon these findings, Study 2 included a sample of 163 participants …

The Attitudes And Beliefs Of Special And General Educational Professionals Concerning Alcohol And Drug Problems, Troy Wayne Kieser May 2015

The Attitudes And Beliefs Of Special And General Educational Professionals Concerning Alcohol And Drug Problems, Troy Wayne Kieser

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Drug and alcohol abuse is one of the greatest challenges of public education. Substance abuse affects student academic performance. Teacher attitudes concerning substance use are linked to drug and alcohol use by students. The purpose of this study was to assertion teacher attitudes and beliefs about drug and alcohol use. The data were collected using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was a modified version of the Addiction Belief Inventory (ABI) based on the five constructs (e.g., coping, efficacy, disease, lack of efficacy, moral weakness) of substance abuse (Broadus, Hartje, Roget, & Cahoon, 2010; Luke, Ribisi, Walton, & Davidson, 2002). The participants …

Predicting Problematic Alcohol Use And Negative Alcohol-Related Psychosocial Consequences Of Use In A College-Aged Sample, Christa Murray Apr 2015

Predicting Problematic Alcohol Use And Negative Alcohol-Related Psychosocial Consequences Of Use In A College-Aged Sample, Christa Murray

Honors College Theses

Drinking motivation (Cooper, 1994), coping strategies (Laurent, Catanzaro, & Callan, 1996), and negative alcohol-related consequences (Young, 2003) are theorized constructs that have been demonstrated to be related to problematic alcohol use. These three areas of research vary in findings, which makes clarification of these findings vital to the understanding of problematic alcohol use. The purpose of the present study is to determine to what extent motivation to drink and styles of coping predict problematic alcohol use, as well as to what extent problematic alcohol use predicts the different consequences of use. Participants consisted of 71 undergraduate students (54.2% female; Mage …

Molecular Sites And Mechanisms Of Action Of Alcohol On The Nmda Receptor Glun2b Subunit, Yulin Zhao Apr 2015

Molecular Sites And Mechanisms Of Action Of Alcohol On The Nmda Receptor Glun2b Subunit, Yulin Zhao

Dissertations (1934 -)

Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are behavioral disorders involving altered synaptic transmission in the brain. The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, a subtype of glutamate-gated ion channel, has been shown to be one of the most important target sites of alcohol in the central nervous system. The NMDA receptor is formed between two obligatory GluN1 subunits and two GluN2 subunits (2A-2D). Previous studies have been mainly focused on the GluN2A subunit-containing NMDA receptor to study the molecular sites and mechanisms of alcohol action on the NMDA receptors. However, a major role for the GluN2B subunits in the action of alcohol has been pointed …

Measure Development Of An Assessment Of 'Hitting Bottom' For Individuals With Alcohol Problems, Megan Kirouac Jan 2015

Measure Development Of An Assessment Of 'Hitting Bottom' For Individuals With Alcohol Problems, Megan Kirouac

Psychology ETDs

Alcohol problems are a serious public health concern but few individuals with alcohol problems and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) ever receive formal treatment (SAMHSA, 2009). To understand and address this phenomenon, it is important to understand why individuals decide to seek treatment, which may help clinicians facilitate treatment entry and completion among individuals with AUDs. Research on reasons individuals cite for seeking treatment and their success in recovering from AUDs suggests that hitting bottom' may be important (e.g., Sobell, Sobell, Toneatto, & Leo, 1993). Accordingly, evaluating the concept of 'hitting bottom' may provide insight into why individuals seek and complete …

The Role Of Alveolar Macrophages In Pulmonary Inflammation After Intoxication And Burn Injury, Jill Ann Shults Jan 2015

The Role Of Alveolar Macrophages In Pulmonary Inflammation After Intoxication And Burn Injury, Jill Ann Shults

Dissertations

A positive blood alcohol concentration is detected in nearly half of burn patients admitted to the emergency room. The combined insult of being intoxicated at the time of burn injury results in more clinical complications, in comparison to non-intoxicated burn patients. Severe burn, with or without inhalation injury, is a common predisposing factor for the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Exacerbated pulmonary inflammation and a net result of insufficient gas exchange underlie the large percentage of burn fatalities due to pulmonary complications. Previous studies in our laboratory indicate a drastic elevation in pulmonary inflammation in a mouse model …

The Gut-Liver Axis Regulates Pulmonary Inflammation After Intoxication And Burn Injury, Michael M. Chen Jan 2015

The Gut-Liver Axis Regulates Pulmonary Inflammation After Intoxication And Burn Injury, Michael M. Chen

Dissertations

The increasing prevalence of binge drinking and its high association with traumatic injury warrant further investigation into the mechanisms underlying the worsened clinical outcomes associated with this combined injury. Existing literature suggests the liver is at the center of the postburn systemic response with crosstalk between the intestinal microbiome and the liver playing an important role after injury. There is a paucity in the literature, however, regarding the role of the gut-liver axis in the common clinical scenario of burns preceded by alcohol intoxication. Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrated intoxication potentiates postburn hepatic damage and IL-6 production in a …

Alcohol Consumption, Frailty, And The Mediating Role Of C-Reactive Protein In Older Adults, Mona Shah Jan 2015

Alcohol Consumption, Frailty, And The Mediating Role Of C-Reactive Protein In Older Adults, Mona Shah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Frailty is a well-established indicator of late-life decline and is accompanied by higher rates of comorbidity and disability. Meanwhile, an estimated 41% of adults over the age of 65 report consuming alcohol – an identified health risk and protective factor depending on dosage. Given that the demographic group of older Americans is projected to double by the year 2050, identification of frailty risk and protective factors is imperative. The goals of this thesis are to: (1) identify how varying levels of alcohol consumption relate to frailty, and (2) elucidate a possible mechanism that accounts for the relationship between alcohol consumption …

Habit Formation In A Rodent Model Of Alcoholism: Genetic Susceptibility, Alcohol-Specific Effects, And Pharmacological Manipulation, David Scott O'Tousa Jan 2015

Habit Formation In A Rodent Model Of Alcoholism: Genetic Susceptibility, Alcohol-Specific Effects, And Pharmacological Manipulation, David Scott O'Tousa

Open Access Dissertations

Habit formation is a well-characterized process involving a shift from response-outcome as the leading driving force underlying action to a stimulus-response mechanistic process. It is hypothesized that a transition from goal-directed behavior to habitual behavior is driven by a transition of the bulk of cognitive load from neocortical toward lower neurological mechanisms. While many neurotransmitter systems have a demonstrated involvement in this process, the dopamine system is particularly implicated. Habit formation is assessed through the maintenance of extinction responding for an undesired, or devalued, outcome.

Stand-Alone Personalized Normative Feedback For College Student Drinkers: A Meta-Analytic Review, 2004 To 2014, Keri Dotson Jan 2015

Stand-Alone Personalized Normative Feedback For College Student Drinkers: A Meta-Analytic Review, 2004 To 2014, Keri Dotson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Personalized normative feedback (PNF) has shown promise as a stand-alone intervention for reducing alcohol use among college students. PNF uses norms clarification to correct drinking norms misperceptions by highlighting discrepancies between personal alcohol use, perceived peer alcohol use, and actual peer alcohol use. Previous reviews of personalized feedback interventions have identified norms clarification as key a component, prompting researchers to study PNF as a single-component intervention for college drinking. As the number of publications focused on PNF effectiveness has increased in recent years, an empirical review of these studies is warranted to assess the potential impact of PNF as a …

Predictors Of Obesity Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Olawunmi Obisesan Jan 2015

Predictors Of Obesity Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Olawunmi Obisesan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Obesity has been identified as a significant risk factor for chronic diseases, contributing to health disparities in minority and vulnerable populations. Though research has identified an increased risk for obesity in the Hispanic immigrant population, there is little or no research on the heterogeneity of obesity predictors in specific immigrant populations in the United States. This study examined the predictors of obesity in the Nigerian immigrant population in the United States. Guided by the social ecological model and the segmented assimilation theory, this cross-sectional study collected primary data from 205 Nigerian immigrants in the United States using the CDC's Behavioral …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Clinical Intuition Among Alcohol And Drug Counselors, Zach Hansen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study investigates the experience of clinical intuition among alcohol and drug counselors. Clinical intuition has been acknowledged as an integral component to counseling by numerous influential theorists, and has recently been researched in the context of clinical psychology, and marriage and family counseling. However, little or no research has been conducted on clinical intuition among alcohol and drug counselors. In order to thoroughly describe the essence of clinical intuition among this population, phenomenological research methods were utilized. Five alcohol and drug counselors with varying backgrounds with between 5-40 years of experience participated in this study. Participants were interviewed, and …

Alcohol Sale Status And Violent Deaths In Kentucky, Usa: 2005-2012, Hanan Abdulghafoor Khaleel

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Alcohol is one of the major public health problems worldwide because of its association with many health and psychological problems. This study adds to the extant literature by examining the association between being a resident in a wet county and having an alcohol related violent death, an alcohol related suicide, or an alcohol related homicide victimization.

The first aim of this study is to determine whether residents of wet counties have a higher odds of alcohol related violent deaths than residents of dry/moist counties after adjusting for other confounding factors. The second aim is to determine whether residents of wet …

College Students’ Use Of Social Media To Communicate About Alcohol And Drinking Behaviors, Jenna E. Reno Jan 2015

College Students’ Use Of Social Media To Communicate About Alcohol And Drinking Behaviors, Jenna E. Reno

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Social networking sites (SNSs) are an increasingly popular channel for communication among college students. Often students disclose more freely via social networking sites than they would in other situations. These disclosures commonly include information about engaging in risky health behaviors (e.g., binge drinking). Study 1 examined students’ impression management goals and self-presentation tactics specifically related to self-disclosures of drinking behavior on SNSs. Findings suggest that students use differing self-presentation tactics across various SNSs in order to achieve their impression management goals and to avoid consequences associated with disclosing about risky health behaviors to certain audiences. Study 2 sought to develop …
