Theses and Dissertations

There are many national and international schools in Cairo today, and every year lots of parents make educational choices for their children. Those choices are based on various factors. This research explores the factors that influence parents to select a certain school type and not the other. It is an initial step into school research as an attempt to help educators and administrators understand parents’ and students’ priorities, needs and expectations when choosing a school. The research questions are: (1) What are the most and least important factors that parents consider when choosing a national/ international school for their children? …

Influence Of Social Media In Stages Of Democratization, Ira David Sternberg Dec 2014

Influence Of Social Media In Stages Of Democratization, Ira David Sternberg

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Internet and social media have become a pervasive part of our global environment over the last few decades, utilized primarily for commerce, communication, and entertainment. The last several years, however, have seen an increase in the application of social media in political discourse and activities, primarily in developed democracies and autocracies. Does that mean social media can influence democratic transition and consolidation in the 21st century? Are the examples of the Green Movement in 2009 and the Arab Spring in 2011 a validation of social media in service to democracy, or is social media also a tool for surveillance …

The Egyptian Uprising And April 6th Youth Movement Split, Somaia Metwalli El Sayed Oct 2014

The Egyptian Uprising And April 6th Youth Movement Split, Somaia Metwalli El Sayed

Theses and Dissertations

Few months after the Egyptian uprising, a considerable number of April 6th Youth movement announced their split. Knowing that the movement was already suffering from internal disputes over a number of issues, the research problem is centered on questioning whether and how the uprising played a role in such incident. Academic scholarship on social movements developed partial and action-oriented theories to explain different processes and dynamics of movement’s collective action. However, little work has been done on the trajectory of social movements in the Middle East, especially after radical forms of change as revolutions, uprisings or upheavals. It is argued …

Religion Is Not The Answer: How To Turn Restlessness Into Meaningful Change - The Egyptian Conundrum, Alain C. Seckler Oct 2014

Religion Is Not The Answer: How To Turn Restlessness Into Meaningful Change - The Egyptian Conundrum, Alain C. Seckler

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The situation in Egypt and elsewhere in parts of the Arab world is to some extent reminiscent of the situation that prevailed before 1914 in Europe, where a motley array of unharnessed popular micronationalisms (today, instrumentalized religious fervor) combined with big power politics and interests and led to the cataclysm of war. With regard to Egypt, there is also a huge generational gap, with 2/3 of Egypt's population below the age of 35 years. The so-called "solutions" of the past, whether religious or secular, will no longer work if the voice of the young people is not heard by their …

From The Forefront To The Sidelines: Youth In Post-Revolution Egypt, Khadiga Omar Oct 2014

From The Forefront To The Sidelines: Youth In Post-Revolution Egypt, Khadiga Omar

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the reasons for the declining role of youth as effective political players since the Egyptian Revolution in 2011. Particularly looking at the “Revolutionary Youth”, this study investigates why their activism over the course of the past four years could not translate into political power that would lead to the realization of the goals of the revolution. Resource Mobilization Theory, Political Opportunity Structure and Framing constitute a tri-lens through which the political experience of the youth is analyzed in this research. This thesis argues that a) the youth’s organizational dilemma; b) their reliance on protest as the exclusive …

Evaluating The United Nations Development Assistance Framework (Undaf) As A Strategic Programming Tool At The National Level, With Special Reference To Egypt, Rasha Mahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

The unique character of the United Nations (UN) imposes strategic challenges on the organization’s leadership and management structures at the national and the international level. In response to these challenges, the UN reform efforts, introduced in 1997, paved the way for the UN system effectiveness, efficiency and coherence. Emerging from the reform, the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) engages various development stakeholders in identifying and achieving national development priorities. This review found that the UNDAF is an effective strategic instrument that well-positions the UN at the national level and it enhances national capacities and supports national governments in identifying …

Tax Changes In Very Different Economies, Jeffrey Condon Jul 2014

Tax Changes In Very Different Economies, Jeffrey Condon

Economics Dissertations

Despite the prevalence of computable general equilibrium (CGE) models applied to tax changes of varying types, little work has been done focusing on state level comprehensive tax reform or on tax reform in countries undergoing a regime change. This research develops and applies methodologies for analyzing fiscal policy changes under these two very different economic scenarios. The findings for each application are relevant to policy makers as they weigh the effects of tax reform. The models developed for the two scenarios offer guidance to future modelers in studying similar economies and the contrast of the two provides a framework for …

Revisiting The Spiral Of Silence In A Social Media Environment: Egypt’S 2014 Presidential Election As A Case Study, Heba T. Saleh Elshahed Jul 2014

Revisiting The Spiral Of Silence In A Social Media Environment: Egypt’S 2014 Presidential Election As A Case Study, Heba T. Saleh Elshahed

Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of the Internet and anonymous features of online media, users have established novel platforms to voice their opinion freely without fear of negative feedback. This thesis explores the application of a long-standing public opinion theory– the spiral of silence by Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann–within the prevalent Social Networking Sites (SNS), particularly Facebook. When applying spiral of silence to online mediated environment, it seems intuitive that the lack of verbal cues and anonymity offered would serve to undermine the fear of isolation and restlessness that results in unwillingness to express minority views. This research contributes to understanding how the spiral …

Brothers In Motion: Religious Practice, Political Action, And The Mobilization Of The Early Muslim Brotherhood, Ian Henry Vandermeulen Jun 2014

Brothers In Motion: Religious Practice, Political Action, And The Mobilization Of The Early Muslim Brotherhood, Ian Henry Vandermeulen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In light of Randy Martin's proposal to use dance as an analytic tool for understanding social movements, this article seeks to reconstruct the early mobilization of the Muslim Brotherhood as "bodies in motion." Through a re-examination of both primary and secondary source material, this study highlights the ways in which founder Hasan al-Banna appropriated both Islamic and colonial choreographic logics into the Muslim Brotherhood's pious training regimen, scouting programs, political expression, and social welfare projects. I argue that the Muslim Brotherhood was mobilized through al-Banna's revival of traditional Islamic practices concerning the body, reconfigured for the goal not of otherworldly …

Amethyst, Apotropaia, And The Eye Of Re, Laurel Hackley Jun 2014

Amethyst, Apotropaia, And The Eye Of Re, Laurel Hackley

Sociology, Egyptology & Anthropology Department Theses and Dissertations

Two specific aspects of Middle Kingdom Egyptian apotropaia, amethyst amulets and inscribed ivory wands, are connected by their religious, magical, and mythological connotations. The shared significance of these objects is made clear by iconographic similarities and textual references. The wands in particular are shown to represent a particular mythological moment, the return of the Solar Eye of Re to Egypt. Both amethyst objects and ivory wands reference this important mythological event in ways that illustrate the multi-level importance of the myth in the cultural landscape of the Middle Kingdom Egyptians.

Beyond The Rhetoric Promises Of The Egyptian Sexual Harassment Law: A Study Of The Relationship Between Law And Domination, Nihal Mostafa Abdel Akher Jun 2014

Beyond The Rhetoric Promises Of The Egyptian Sexual Harassment Law: A Study Of The Relationship Between Law And Domination, Nihal Mostafa Abdel Akher

Theses and Dissertations

After decades of male supremacy, it is not surprising to find that social institutions, including the government and the legal system, have a role in maintaining and reproducing the established order of domination. This study seeks to understand the relationship of law to domination. It argues that law serves the dominant society in two ways. The first is that law legitimates power of the established order, relations of domination, and itself. This happens when the practice of law reinforces the established order of domination while maintaining its own principle of fairness. This means that law proclaims a deceitful image of …

Herding Behavior In The Egyptian Stock Market, Noha Allam

Theses and Dissertations

This paper tests for the existence of herding behavior in the Egyptian stock market using daily and monthly data of listed companies on the Egyptian stock Exchange. We follow the methodology of Christie and Huang (1995) and Chang, Cheng, and Khorana (2000) to test for the presence of herding behavior in general, during up and down times (times of stress in the market), and during bearish and bullish market phases. We also split the sample into pre-revolution and post-revolution periods to test the effect of 25th January, 2011 revolution on herding behavior in the market. We found that: first, the …

Spatial Model For The Management Of A System Of Infrastructure Facilities, Sherif Omar Jun 2014

Spatial Model For The Management Of A System Of Infrastructure Facilities, Sherif Omar

Theses and Dissertations

Infrastructure asset management is an important tool that provides decision makers with optimized plans for the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of systems of infrastructures facilities. The optimization is performed in terms of a limited budget and a pre-defined duration. The first step of this thesis was to create three optimization models. First, a standard model that fragments the asset into fractions distributed over the possible conditions to which actions are applied until the assets reach the targeted conditions over the plan's horizon and within budget. Second, was a robust model that assessed the worst case scenario by the integration of …

Family Law And Citizenship: The Case Study Of Egyptian Baha'is, Vargha Dana Jun 2014

Family Law And Citizenship: The Case Study Of Egyptian Baha'is, Vargha Dana

Theses and Dissertations

After a four-year legal battle in 2009, Egypt’s Supreme Administrative Court granted Egyptian Baha’is the right to obtain national identification cards. However, members of this minority group have continued to struggle to access basic rights of citizenship. Non-recognition of Baha’i marriage is the chief source of disenfranchisement of Baha’is in Egypt. This study argues that marriage as the legal instrument of creating a family, can act as the precursor to citizenship. By sanctioning certain types of marriages and prohibiting others, the state translates its specific ideology into creation of politicized legal entities known as citizens. The state’s aspiration is to …

Quotas In Egypt: Understanding The Implementation And Discourse About Introducing Quotas For Women In The People’S Assembly Between Women’S Groups, Members Of Parliament And Political Parties From 2005-2012, Kristen Anne Belle-Isle

Theses and Dissertations

Quotas for women in Egypt are controversial. The debate about quotas began in the 1970s and has exploded into current debates since January 25th, 2011. Quotas are one vehicle of increasing women’s political representation that became popular after the Beijing Platform for Acton was announced in 1995. This research examines why certain actors in Egypt called for the use of a quota for women at the national level in Egypt. I consider this question in the last few years of Hosni Mubarak’s rule and in the post-Mubarak transitional phase that began in February 2011. I examine the time frame in …

Language Attitudes In An Egyptian Discourse Community, Emily Reigh

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates language attitudes in an elite university in Egypt, addressing all codes spoken in the community: Fusha (Classical Arabic/Modern Standard Arabic), Egyptian Arabic, English and Egyptian Arabic-English code-switching. Some attitudinal research in the region has been conducted (e.g. Bentahila, 1983; Chakrani, 2011; Lawson & Sachdev, 2000), though most neglects to position the discourse community in larger society and uses limited methodological approaches. In this study, attitudes are interpreted with attention to prevailing language ideologies, including the notion of a standard language, tension between modernity and tradition and language as symbolic capitol. Overt and covert attitudes in terms of …

Revolutionizing The Revolution: An Examination Of Social Media's Role In The Egyptian Arab Spring, Needa A. Malik

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

By asserting that no revolution occurs singularly, I propose that revolutions occur in a multiplicity. Within the framework of the Arab Spring Revolutions, another revolution has been occurring concurrently: a social media revolution. This revolution is taking place in the digital, social media age. It is a revolution that has been tweeted, facebooked, recorded, documented and shared instantaneously on platforms that obeys few lines of political sovereignty. Revolution and political action can now truly be shown from the perspective of the common citizen. Activists have discovered a greater platform for their voices to be distributed and causes promoted. The Arab …

The Power Of Corrupt Political Environments And Its Effects On Museums: A Look At Egypt’S Modern-Day ‘Indiana Jones’: Dr. Zahi Hawass, Christine Smith May 2014

The Power Of Corrupt Political Environments And Its Effects On Museums: A Look At Egypt’S Modern-Day ‘Indiana Jones’: Dr. Zahi Hawass, Christine Smith

History Theses

Egypt has been a nation plagued with political corruption since the early years of colonialism. After being under French and then British domination throughout the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, the 1952 Revolution under Egypt’s Free Officers gave, Egypt a rare opportunity for independent political and cultural growth. Although change occurred politically―as seen in the Suez Crisis―Egypt’s antiquities remained stagnant and still under the influence of foreigners. Egypt’s antiquities were directly supervised by the British and the French until that time, but remained influenced even after the political revolution. There were few Egyptians involved in preservation …

L’Imaginaire D’Albert Cossery – Une Modalité De Transcender Le Temps Et L’Espace, Lavinia Adina Horner May 2014

L’Imaginaire D’Albert Cossery – Une Modalité De Transcender Le Temps Et L’Espace, Lavinia Adina Horner

Masters Theses

This thesis offers an analysis of the works of Albert Cossery, an Egyptian writer who wrote novels in French, even though all of them – with the exception of a single book – describe only the country he left behind – Egypt. In order to continue to live mentally in « Egypt » while in Exile, and to cope with the malady of nostalgia, he recreated his own Egypt in his books with the help of the five senses, which made this imaginary Egypt plausible. He also played the role of his characters, thus defying time and space. Although he …

"Legless Birds": A Re-Examination Of The Motivating Factors Behind Hieroglyphic "Mutilation", Ashley R. Stanton Apr 2014

"Legless Birds": A Re-Examination Of The Motivating Factors Behind Hieroglyphic "Mutilation", Ashley R. Stanton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has often been assumed that the "mutilation" of animate hieroglyphic signs in ancient Egypt was meant to protect the deceased from harm in a tomb context. Using a semiotic perspective, this study will encourage a re-evaluation of this dominant explanation. The Egyptian hieroglyph can be interpreted on both iconic and symbolic levels, making a unilateral reading of any given sign unlikely. "Mutilation" has been expressed in many different ways throughout Egyptian history, from both outside and inside a funerary context, and to several different ends. This study will examine the "mutilation" of bird-signs in the late Middle Kingdom and …

Nut, The Zodiac, And Sothis: An Iconographic Analysis Of Five Coffin Lids From The Roman Period Soter Group, Elizabeth Anne Golden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Greek zodiac became known to Egypt during the Graeco-Roman period and can be seen primarily in temples. This imagery is not limited to temples, however, and can be seen on five coffin lids from the Soter group along with related figures of Nut and Sothis. The function of the zodiac figures was to represent the passage of time. In this study, I will identify the Osirian and solar roles of the sky goddess Nut on the interior of coffins. I will then discuss the coffin lids as a form of archaizing of Middle Kingdom star charts on coffin lids …

This is a qualitative exploratory study that examines the representation of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) in contemporary Egyptian newspapers. It aims to reveal the linguistic features that contribute to the construction of a positive or negative image of the MB in the data. The study uses the Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) in analyzing its data. This approach mainly looks at representation strategies, in particular, nomination, predication and argumentation strategies, which are primarily manifested through lexical choices. The data for the study consist of 18 articles from two Egyptian newspapers, Al-Hurryya wa Al-Adala "Freedom and Justice" and Al-Wattan "The Homeland". The …

Taking a case study approach, the study particularly focuses on female employees' involvement in training and developing activities for skill and capacity building. The findings of this study show that most of the female employees in the case study hold administrative positions. The interviews also reveal the payment inequality between male and female employees in the case study organization. …
