Abstract
Reflection on the influences and experiences of successful female head coaches of women sports is important to understanding the factors that have enabled them to obtain and sustain their leadership positions in a male-dominated profession. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the experiences of two female head coaches at a Southeastern land-grant university and to understand how they have sustained their role as a head coach in a world where female coaches are significantly declining. The traditional definition of leadership emphasizes the actions of individual leaders with culturally-ascribed masculine personality traits and behaviors who control all aspects of an organization. A new post-industrial paradigm, in contrast, defines leadership as interpersonal relationships. This evolving paradigm, with its emphasis on culturally-attributed feminine traits such as collaboration and participation, has allowed for a broader conceptualization of leadership that brings forth discussions on women leaders and their experiences. Black women are underrepresented in leadership positions within organizations. The extent to which self-efficacy influences the advancement potential of Black females is unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the self-efficacy beliefs of black women in leadership positions and to determine how Black women leaders' careers are influenced by their self-efficacy beliefs. Participants for the study were determined using convenient random sampling.
