Relationship Of Age Of Onset And Other Dimensions Of Trauma To Dissociation In An Adult Clinical Population, Amineh Abbas
Relationship Of Age Of Onset And Other Dimensions Of Trauma To Dissociation In An Adult Clinical Population, Amineh Abbas
Masters Theses
This study examined four dimensions of trauma and how they affected levels of dissociation in male and female adult outpatients. These dimensions are age of onset, multiple trauma, chronicity, and recency. Two hundred forty-five adult outpatients at the University of Tennessee Psychological Clinic were administered the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Traumatic Experiences Checklist (TEC) as part of the routine intake procedure. Of those individuals, 177 patients reported trauma and were included in the final study sample. All four dimensions of trauma were found to be significantly correlated with dissociation. In addition, multiple trauma was found to be the …
Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, And Burnout Among Police Officers Who Have Experienced A Previous Perceived Trauma, Laura M. Battle
Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, And Burnout Among Police Officers Who Have Experienced A Previous Perceived Trauma, Laura M. Battle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a difference between levels of compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and burnout among police officers in regard to years of experience adn whether or not they had experienced a previous perceived trauma. Commissioned police officers from a large urban police department in the Mid-South (N = 1,390) participated in the survey, which included a demographic survey, a trauma indicator, and the ProQol inventory which is comprised of three sub-scales: compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and burnout. Each of the three sub-scales have a range from 0 (low compassion fatigue, high …
Disclosure And Health: Enhancing The Benefits Of Trauma Writing Through Response Training, Andrea Konig
Disclosure And Health: Enhancing The Benefits Of Trauma Writing Through Response Training, Andrea Konig
Theses and Dissertations
Writing about a personal traumatic event has been found to have psychological and physical health benefits. Focusing on traumatic memories in writing may be a form of exposure. In imagery exposure and trauma writing, greater physiological reactivity was predictive of better outcomes. Given the importance of physiological output in emotional processing, response training was developed and found to be effective in increasing appropriate physiological reactivity in imagery exposure. If response training amplifies physiological reactivity and the benefits of writing, the hypothesis that writing is a form of exposure would be strengthened, and training may be a valuable tool to improve …
Long Term Effects Of Chronic Variable Stress Administered During Different Developmental Stages In Mice, Henry Boeh
Long Term Effects Of Chronic Variable Stress Administered During Different Developmental Stages In Mice, Henry Boeh
Dissertations (1934 -)
A number of studies have suggested that the occurrence of past trauma can increase an individual's chance of developing PTSD from a new traumatic experience later in life. Trauma that occurs during childhood appears to have a particularly strong effect on this risk increase. Furthermore, conditioned fear responses have been shown to incubate over extended periods of time in animal models. To further investigate the role these phenomena play in the development of PTSD, this study exposed juvenile and adult mice to 7 days of chronic variable stress (CVS). One month later, a Pavlovian delay fear conditioning procedure was used …
Trauma In Adults With Developmental Disabilities : An Analysis Of Trauma Theory And Behavior Modification, Lauren Rae Rosenblum
Trauma In Adults With Developmental Disabilities : An Analysis Of Trauma Theory And Behavior Modification, Lauren Rae Rosenblum
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explored the phenomenon of trauma in adults with developmental disabilities. The study examined adults with developmental disabilities' vulnerabilities to abusive conditions and systemic oppression, increasing the populations' risk of traumatization. The study analyzed trauma theory and behavior modification, comparing the prevalence and treatment implications of each theory on adults with persons with developmental disabilities. Furthermore, findings indicated that there were limitations in research and access to trauma-based therapy, while behavior modification was predominantly used as a treatment remedy. This report concludes with recommendations for the social worker and mental health fields.
Narratives Of Resilience : Stories Of Survival Among Rwandan Women Who Endured The 1994 Genocide, Leah Krieger
Narratives Of Resilience : Stories Of Survival Among Rwandan Women Who Endured The 1994 Genocide, Leah Krieger
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative thesis explores resiliency factors of 17 Rwandan women who survived the 1994 genocide. The psychological symptoms of trauma and resiliency research are explored as well as narrative healing techniques. The thesis uses secondary data of unedited testimonies collected after the genocide in Rwanda and qualitatively codes for resiliency. The research shows that the following factors aided in resiliency with this population: courage, a belief in God, carrying on the legacy of their family, communal support and a purpose in life. This body of work emphasizes the potential for not only healing after a trauma, but also increased growth, …
Neural Correlates Of Attention Bias In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Fmri Study, Negar Fani
Neural Correlates Of Attention Bias In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Fmri Study, Negar Fani
Psychology Dissertations
Attention biases to trauma-related information contribute to symptom maintenance in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); this phenomenon has been observed through various behavioral studies, although findings from studies using a precise, direct bias task, the dot probe, have been mixed. PTSD neuroimaging studies have indicated atypical function in specific brain regions involved with attention bias; when viewing emotionally-salient cues or engaging in tasks that require attention, individuals with PTSD have demonstrated altered activity in brain regions implicated in cognitive control and attention allocation, including the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and amygdala. However, remarkably few PTSD neuroimaging studies …
Mothering And Surrogacy In Twentieth-Century American Literature: Promise Or Betrayal, Kimberly C. Weaver
Mothering And Surrogacy In Twentieth-Century American Literature: Promise Or Betrayal, Kimberly C. Weaver
English Dissertations
Twentieth-century American literature is filled with new images of motherhood. Long gone is the idealism of motherhood that flourished during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in life and in writing. Long gone are the mother help books and guides on training mothers. The twentieth-century fiction writer ushers in new examples of motherhood described in novels that critique the bad mother and turn a critical eye towards the role of women and motherhood. This study examines the trauma surrounding twentieth-century motherhood and surrogacy; in particular, how abandonment, rape, incest, and negation often results in surrogacy; and how selected authors create characters …
Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Trauma Writing: Impact On Hiv/Aids-Targeted Quality Of Life, Rachel A. Ruffin
Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Trauma Writing: Impact On Hiv/Aids-Targeted Quality Of Life, Rachel A. Ruffin
Open Access Dissertations
Expressive writing has been linked to positive psychological and health outcomes in general and medical populations, but research examining this intervention in HIV is limited. Higher levels of emotional expression (EE) and depth processing (DP) during writing have been linked to better health status in HIV. Expressive writing has been shown to improve health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in other populations, but has not been examined in HIV. HRQoL is often compromised in HIV+ individuals and therefore improvements in this area are an appropriate goal of psychosocial interventions. This longitudinal study used HLM analyses to examine the relationship between levels …
Embodied Culture: An Exploration Of Irish Dance Through Trauma Theory, Erica Burgin
Embodied Culture: An Exploration Of Irish Dance Through Trauma Theory, Erica Burgin
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines traditional Irish dance as a locus of cultural memory, inscribed on the body. The native people of Ireland experienced invasion and oppression for nearly a millennium, beginning with Viking invasions at the end of the 8th century and ending in the 1940s, when the British finally departed Ireland, now an independent country. During the years of English rule, the British imposed harsh laws and sought to eradicate all vestiges of Irish culture in an attempt to diminish Irish identity. Through the ages, the definition of what it means to be Irish has changed widely, frequently resulting in …
Maternal Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Parenting, Family Functioning, And Child Outcome, Desiree Alana Sutherland
Maternal Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Parenting, Family Functioning, And Child Outcome, Desiree Alana Sutherland
Dissertations
Although a good deal of research has been conducted examining the effects of parental psychopathology of various types (i.e. maternal and paternal depression and schizophrenia, paternal PTSD), very few studies have investigated the influence of maternal PTSD on mothers’ parenting and their children’s behavioral and psychological functioning. This paucity of research is in spite of the fact that women exhibit higher lifetime PTSD prevalence rates than men. The current study examined the influence of maternal PTSD and trauma on mothers’ parenting, family functioning, and children’s psychological well-being in a sample of 125 mothers and 34 mother-child dyads. Mothers provided self-report …
Counselor Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Training And Implementation Of Self-Care Strategies Related To Trauma Work, Leslie Midtbo Culver
Counselor Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Training And Implementation Of Self-Care Strategies Related To Trauma Work, Leslie Midtbo Culver
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Various forms of trauma are regularly reported across the spectrum of counseling settings and the potential negative psychological effects on counselors who are repeatedly exposed to traumatic material are well documented. However, many researchers suggest that vicarious traumatization can be prevented and mitigated with personal and professional self-care strategies. The American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics indicates that counselors have a professional responsibility to engage in self-care activities, as efforts to ensure the psychological health of counselors will have a direct effect on their ability to help clients. The purpose of this mixed-method, descriptive, correlational research was to explore …
Pathway Semantics: An Algebraic Data Driven Algorithm To Generate Hypotheses About Molecular Patterns Underlying Disease Progression, Mary Frances Mcguire
Pathway Semantics: An Algebraic Data Driven Algorithm To Generate Hypotheses About Molecular Patterns Underlying Disease Progression, Mary Frances Mcguire
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
The overarching goal of the Pathway Semantics Algorithm (PSA) is to improve the in silico identification of clinically useful hypotheses about molecular patterns in disease progression. By framing biomedical questions within a variety of matrix representations, PSA has the flexibility to analyze combined quantitative and qualitative data over a wide range of stratifications. The resulting hypothetical answers can then move to in vitro and in vivo verification, research assay optimization, clinical validation, and commercialization. Herein PSA is shown to generate novel hypotheses about the significant biological pathways in two disease domains: shock / trauma and hemophilia A, and validated experimentally …
The Effectiveness Of A Personalized School-Wide Crisis And Trauma Management Training Program On Sense Of Preparedness For School Counselors-In-Training, Elizabeth Keller-Dupree
The Effectiveness Of A Personalized School-Wide Crisis And Trauma Management Training Program On Sense Of Preparedness For School Counselors-In-Training, Elizabeth Keller-Dupree
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of a personalized school-wide crisis and trauma management training program for master's-level school counselors-in-training. The study began with Pilot Study 1: Crisis Training Need Assessment which sought to best identify the crisis training needs for a specific geographic region. Results from Pilot Study 1 supported that unexpected student and teacher death was the crisis category which affects students the most and is in need of further training at the master's level. Next, Pilot Study 2: Crisis Training Feedback sought to obtain comments and suggestions from masters- and doctoral-level counselors-intraining regarding …
Writing Out The Storm : Trauma And The Work Of Composition., Scott L. Rogers
Writing Out The Storm : Trauma And The Work Of Composition., Scott L. Rogers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The discourses of "trauma" and "post-trauma" have become pervasive in representations of life as it is lived in contemporary globalized culture. As new media technologies make the world more accessible, we become accustomed to overwhelming social, political, and personal circumstances, and we come to see "trauma" everywhere, all the time. My dissertation project responds to the presence of "trauma" in the writing classroom, as it appears purposefully in pedagogies designed to respond to it, and as it appears naturally through the interests and experiences of students and teachers who come into contact with national, natural, or personal disaster. Specifically, I …
Rewrite, Jamie Lawyer
Rewrite, Jamie Lawyer
Theses and Dissertations
“Rewrite” is a photographic project that utilizes the domesstic space as a stage for emotional projection of a traumatic memory. The work considers the relationship that exists between an individual and the rooms and objects within a home space in an attempt at understanding an individual’s mental state. “Rewrite” explores the ways in which we exist through our home and how a juxtaposition of objects and materials can create meaning. The photographs are a visual interpretation of the emotions surrounding sexual abuse/assault/rape as they have related to my own personal history and conversations I have had with women close to …
The Lived Experience Of Mental Health Workers In A Residential Treatment Facility Who Work With Multiply Traumatized Children And Self-Identify As Experiencing Vicarious Trauma And Compassion Satisfaction, Debra Hyatt-Burkhart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Examination of the work of providing trauma-focused treatment has been, heretofore, accomplished primarily through a lens of pathology. It cannot be ignored that many professionals who work with traumatized individuals suffer negative effects. What has been discounted is the experience of individuals who experience negative effects and also experience psychological benefit and personal growth from their work with trauma survivors. Literature regarding vicarious trauma and secondary traumatic stress is abundant, but few studies have been conducted that have been specifically designed to explore the experience of vicarious posttraumatic growth in providers of psychotraumatology.
In order to add to the insubstantial …
How To Make Love In A Graveyard: An Integrative Approach To Celebrating Trauma, Memory, And History Through Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima, Mon Amour, Molly M. Pearlstein
How To Make Love In A Graveyard: An Integrative Approach To Celebrating Trauma, Memory, And History Through Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima, Mon Amour, Molly M. Pearlstein
Senior Projects Spring 2011
This paper is an exploration of trauma through the lens of Alain Resnais’ 1959 film, Hiroshima, Mon Amour. Elle. We hypothesize that Elle develops Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after witnessing the traumatic death of her first love. Diagnosing Elle using the DSM-IV-TR criteria for PTSD, we demonstrate how she continues to fit the criteria for PTSD fourteen years later. Within this investigation, we target dissociation as an important factor in Elle’s posttraumatic response. The issue of dissociation is discussed in relation to memory, and to a larger extent, historical trauma. Through an integrative approach, film analyses elaborate the elusive …
Survivor Song: The Voice Of Trauma And Its Echoes, Jennifer Rinaldi
Survivor Song: The Voice Of Trauma And Its Echoes, Jennifer Rinaldi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For societies and cultures that experience mass torture and trauma, giving voice to the story of what happened is significant for both the specific individuals who have survived or witnessed the trauma, and the culture that is forced to process it and incorporate the experience into its collective identity. Testimonial literature that resulted from the detention and torture of desaparecidos under the military dictatorship in Argentina in the 1970s and 80s, and the genocide of the Armenian people in 1915, reveals many different approaches in the ways that people write about torture and trauma. In attempting to find a voice …
Identity, Reality, And Truth In Memoirs From The Iraq And Afghanistan Wars, Travis L. Martin
Identity, Reality, And Truth In Memoirs From The Iraq And Afghanistan Wars, Travis L. Martin
Online Theses and Dissertations
This research uses trauma theory, memoir theory, narratology, and recent scientific research into the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) to explore developments in the memoir coming from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Specifically, the author examines the works of Shoshana Johnson, Colby Buzzell, and Anthony Shaffer to uncover the ways in which identity, reality and truth present themselves in the destabilized narratives of traumatized subjects.
Travis Martin is himself a veteran of the Iraq War, using his first-hand knowledge as a compass to guide him through intricate memoirs written by his contemporaries. Beginning …
The Meaning Of Health And Help Seeking Behaviours Among Refugees Who Have Experienced Collective Violence In Their Countries Of Origin: A Canadian Perspective, Gracia Mabaya
Digitized Theses
This study aimed at understanding the meaning of health and the help seeking behaviours, pre and post migration, of refugees who have experienced collective violence in their countries of origin. An interpretative phenomenological approach with a purposive sample of three men and three women was used. Prior to migration, the participants’ meaning of health was deeply influenced by their experience of collective violence, which rendered their embodied experience of life as non-existent and meaningless. Access to health care was limited by the unavailability of sound medical infrastructures and lack of finances. Post migration, the perception of their health and help …
Associations Of Trauma, Nightmares, And Quality Of Life In Urban African American Adolescents, Barbara Peterson
Associations Of Trauma, Nightmares, And Quality Of Life In Urban African American Adolescents, Barbara Peterson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Purpose: Exposure to trauma in youth is pervasive particularly among urban, African American teens. Nightmares are considered a hallmark symptom of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and are associated with poor sleep quality and poor quality of life in adults. Research about nightmares in adolescents is lacking, and these relations have not been previously examined. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among nightmare frequency, nightmare distress, PTSD severity, sleep quality, and quality of life in teens.
Theory: The Roy Adaptation Model was used to conceptualize nightmares as focal stimuli reducing adaptation in teens. Nightmares may heighten memories …
A Systemic Perspective Of Stress In Emergency Medical Personnel: Emergency Medical Technicians And Firefighters, Rob W. Wennerberg
A Systemic Perspective Of Stress In Emergency Medical Personnel: Emergency Medical Technicians And Firefighters, Rob W. Wennerberg
Theses and Dissertations
Emergency medical personnel (firefighters and ambulance personnel) have higher levels of lifetime PTSD symptoms than the general population. Historically this has been attributed to the number of exposures to traumatic incidents, called the dose effect, but recent literature has suggested that there is a complex web of variables that affect an individual's experience of trauma. Through an interpretive review of the literature this dissertation takes the concepts supported by empirical research and organizes them into an integrated theoretical structure. With ecological psychology at the core, the integration uses Living Systems theory as a structure with which to organize and explore …
The Effects Of Alternative Treatments Such As Yoga And Meditation As Adjunctive Therapy On Adolescent Alcohol Abusers With A History Of Trauma, Ann Marie Hegarty
The Effects Of Alternative Treatments Such As Yoga And Meditation As Adjunctive Therapy On Adolescent Alcohol Abusers With A History Of Trauma, Ann Marie Hegarty
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to determine whether alternative forms of treatment such as yoga and meditation, when used adjunctively with traditional therapies, are effective in the treatment of adolescents with both alcohol use disorder (AUD) and a history of trauma. There have been studies linking relaxation therapy and meditation to improved outcomes in similar adult populations but very few have studied adolescents. Given the early onset of use and abuse of alcohol by many of those who also have a history of trauma, this study sought to explore the opinions of clinicians who utilize these alternative treatments. A total of …
Assessing Hormones In Response To Trauma, Corina E. Klein
Assessing Hormones In Response To Trauma, Corina E. Klein
Honors Capstones
Hormones produced in the body may be important in ameliorating the effects of traumatic stress. Previous research bas shown that the concentration of several hormones, such as cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and DHEA-sulfated (DHEAS) in a given individual who has been exposed to a traumatic event may be indicative of the likelihood that the individual will develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The current study assessed whether higher levels of cortisol in comparison to DHEA or DHEAS could indicate a predisposition toward future mental illness following an emotionally stressful event. Female students from Northern lllinois University provided salivary samples before and following …
The Story Of Things, Lucy Elizabeth Capehart
The Story Of Things, Lucy Elizabeth Capehart
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Capehart, Lucy, M.F.A., Spring 2011 Fine Art The Story of Things Chairperson: Professor Matthew Hamon The Story of Things examines the power of objects to hold narrative and inspire the emotional responses of longing, loss and desire. There is a tendency among humans to gather and save objects that hold personal significance. The most banal object is cherished perhaps kept in a box to be admired on occasion. An earring can symbolize the lost love of a boyfriend, a ticket to a basketball game can mark the day after a father’s funeral or a fingernail brush is a stand in …
