Prognostics and timely maintenance of components are critical to the continuing operation of a system. By implementing prognostics, it is possible for the operator to maintain the system in the right place at the right time. However, the complexity in the real world makes near-zero downtime difficult to achieve partly because of a possible shortage of required service parts. This is realistic and quite important in maintenance practice. To coordinate with a prognostics-based maintenance schedule, the operator must decide when to order service parts and how to compete with other operators who also need the same parts. A Genetic Algorithm For The Sensor Location Problem., Di Zhang

We study a sensor location problem that minimizes the total number of sensors to install at road intersections in a transportation network so that the traffic flows on the entire network are uniquely determined. We employ the concepts of hidden network and incremental flow in analyzing the problem, and propose a genetic algorithm for its solution for large-size networks. The algorithm is programmed in Matlab and tested on randomly generated network. Numerical results suggest the algorithm is efficient.

Essential biological processes are governed by organized, dynamic interactions between multiple biomolecular systems. Complexes are thus formed to enable the biological function and get dissembled as the process is completed. Examples of such processes include the translation of the messenger RNA into protein by the ribosome, the folding of proteins by chaperonins or the entry of viruses in host cells. Understanding these fundamental processes by characterizing the molecular mechanisms that enable then, would allow the (better) design of therapies and drugs. This thesis examines the performance of genetic algorithm (GA) crossover techniques within two problems: n-queens with poison (NQWP) and processor scheduling (PS). Each problem was analyzed at sizes of 32, 64, and 128, referring to number of queens to be placed and number of single-time-unit processes to be scheduled, respectively. The specific crossover techniques studied were cycle crossover, order crossover, partially mapped crossover, merging crossover, and one-point, two-point, and uniform signature representation crossover, in addition to various greedy approaches. A Sustainable Autonomic Architecture for Organically Reconfigurable Computing System based on SRAM Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is proposed, modeled analytically, simulated, prototyped, and measured. Low-level organic elements are analyzed and designed to achieve novel self-monitoring, self-diagnosis, and self-repair organic properties. The prototype of a 2-D spatial gradient Sobel video edge-detection organic system use-case developed on a XC4VSX35 Xilinx Virtex-4 Video Starter Kit is presented. As reconfigurable devices' capacities and the complexity of applications that use them increase, the need for self-reliance of deployed systems becomes increasingly prominent. A Sustainable Modular Adaptive Redundancy Technique (SMART) composed of a dual-layered organic system is proposed, analyzed, implemented, and experimentally evaluated. SMART relies upon a variety of self-regulating properties to control availability, energy consumption, and area used, in dynamically-changing environments that require high degree of adaptation. The hardware layer is implemented on a Xilinx Virtex-4 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to provide self-repair using a novel approach called a Reconfigurable Adaptive Redundancy System (RARS).
