Effects Of Tannin-Containing Feed On Haemonchous Contortus In Sheep And Its Behavioral Implications, Jessica A. Juhnke
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Herbivores prefer foods that supply required nutrients and avoid those with excess nutrients and plant secondary compounds (PSC). Nevertheless, PSC such as condensed tannins can provide beneficial medicinal effects to herbivores. The objectives of this study were to determine: 1) if parasitized lambs increased preference for a tannin-rich food after they experienced the beneficial antiparasitic effects of tannins relative to parasitized lambs that did not experience such benefits, 2) if preference for the tannin-containing food in the former group decreased when parasite burdens subsided, and 3) if the tannin-enriched food decreased parasitic burdens.
Twenty-two lambs were familiarized with beet pulp …
Impacts Of Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals On Hybrid Striped Bass: Altered Predation Behavior As A Function Of Changes In Brain Chemistry, Joseph Bisesi
Impacts Of Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals On Hybrid Striped Bass: Altered Predation Behavior As A Function Of Changes In Brain Chemistry, Joseph Bisesi
All Dissertations
Advances in Analytical Chemistry have led to the detection of low concentrations of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater treatment plant effluents as well as their receiving waters. Antidepressants are routinely found among these contaminants, but have been shown to be relatively non-toxic at environmentally measured concentrations using traditional toxicity testing techniques. The neurochemical mode of action of antidepressants warrants investigation of the effects these chemicals may have on fish behavior due to the highly conserved nature of neurotransmitter transporter targets. Using a predator prey bioassay designed in our laboratory, previous studies has shown that the antidepressant fluoxetine …
An Examination Of Teacher Instruction And Student Engagement Involving Adolescents With And Without Challenging Behavior., Regina Gilkey Hirn
An Examination Of Teacher Instruction And Student Engagement Involving Adolescents With And Without Challenging Behavior., Regina Gilkey Hirn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The interactions between teachers and students provide a venue for instructional delivery and ultimately student achievement in the school setting. However, not all students experience positive interactions with teachers in the typical classroom setting, especially those students exhibiting behavioral challenges. These students are observed with greater off task behavior and increased classroom disruptions when compared with their peers. This dissertation examined teacher and student behavior observed in a typical high school classroom exemplifying these interactions. Direct observations of students and teachers were conducted to answer several research questions addressing teacher behaviors: classroom instruction, opportunities to respond, and feedback to students …
The Influence Of Social Environment On Plasma Oxytocin Levels In New Zealand White Rabbits, Crystal M. Noller
The Influence Of Social Environment On Plasma Oxytocin Levels In New Zealand White Rabbits, Crystal M. Noller
Open Access Theses
Previous research attests to the relationship between social support and positive health outcomes while linking social isolation or aggression/hostility with negative health outcomes. Several studies examining atherosclerosis with either genetic or behavioral origins, have reported decreased disease severity in socially supportive environments. In order to identify and understand the mechanism responsible for decreased disease, the current study examined physiological differences in New Zealand White rabbits within unstable, stable, and isolated social environments and observed whether functional hormonal changes were apparent over time and as a response to behavior characteristic of these environments. Results indicated that animals within the unstable condition …
Family Functioning's Relationship With Compliance In Families With A Child Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jackie Edward Ferrell
Family Functioning's Relationship With Compliance In Families With A Child Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jackie Edward Ferrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The number of children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD] is significant and growing (Pastor & Reuben, 2008). For example, the United States Census Bureau survey of medical issues reported that 4.5 million children, representing 7.8% of the population in the United States between the ages of 5 to 17, have been diagnosed with ADHD (National Health Interview Survey, 2006). Compliance in families with a child with ADHD has been a topic of research. A number of studies have specifically investigated medication compliance. It is reported that medication non-adherence can range from 20% to 70% (Stine, 1994). It is not only …
Reducing Reliance On Supplemental Winter Feeding In Elk (Cervus Canadensis): An Applied Management Experiment At Deseret Land And Livestock Ranch, Utah, Dax L. Mangus
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wildlife managers have fed elk in North America for nearly 100 years. Giving winter feed to elk can compensate for a shortage of natural winter range and may boost elk populations while also helping prevent commingling with livestock and depredation of winter feed intended for livestock. In contrast to these benefits of supplemental feeding, there are economic and environmental costs associated with feeding, and elk herds that winter on feeding grounds have a higher risk of contracting and transmitting disease. Brucellosis is of primary concern now, and Chronic Wasting Disease may be in the future. Many see the discontinuation of …

A Study Of The Behavior Of Veneer Wall Systems In Medium Rise Buildings Under Seismic Loads., Niranjan Desai 1979-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents an analytical investigation that examined the seismic performance of steel stud backed and Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) backed masonry veneer wall systems, under in and out - of - plane loads, in medium rise building frames. The investigation was prompted by recently observed damage to brick veneer wall systems due to strong earthquake and wind events. Prior research on these systems had focused on veneer walls built using older construction practices, or on residential wood stud backed veneer wall systems, or wall systems in low rise building frames. In this investigation, analytical models of the wall systems …
Anxiety-Like Behavior In C57bl/6j And Dba/2j Mice: Pharmacological Characterization Of The Elevated Zero Maze And The Influence Of Age-Related Differences On Behavior, Timothy James Flanigan
Anxiety-Like Behavior In C57bl/6j And Dba/2j Mice: Pharmacological Characterization Of The Elevated Zero Maze And The Influence Of Age-Related Differences On Behavior, Timothy James Flanigan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety disorders affect a significant proportion of the population and can be debilitating in some circumstances. The exact etiology of these disorders remains to be determined and animal models are an important part of that effort. The elevated zero maze, a behavioral measure of anxiety, was introduced as an alternative to the popular elevated plus maze. While the elevated zero maze has been pharmacologically validated in rats, the available data in mice is more limited. Similarly, the data available on anxiety-like behavior in adolescent mice lacks breadth despite considerable evidence suggesting that developmental processes during this period play a role …

Effective Data Collection Modalities Utilized In Monitoring The Effects Of The Good Behavior Game: Technology-Based Data Collection Versus Hand Collected Data, Susan Elizabeth Elswick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Good Behavior Game (GBG) has been identified as an effective evidence-based class-wide management intervention to decrease maladaptive classroom behaviors. This study was a systematic replication and extension of previous research on GBG. This study looks at the continued effectiveness of the GBG on increasing appropriate student classroom behaviors and on increasing teacher behavior-specific praise statements to students. This research is also attempting to investigate teacher perception of the use of evidence-based interevntions and data collection in the classroom, and the differences in accuracy in data collection and the GBG intervention while monitoring teacher's usage of both hand calculated and …
Virtual And Live Social Facilitation While Exergaming: Competitiveness Moderates, Amanda L. Snyder
Virtual And Live Social Facilitation While Exergaming: Competitiveness Moderates, Amanda L. Snyder
Honors Theses
This study evaluated the effects of virtual and live social facilitation on exercise behavior using a cybercycle, a virtual reality-enhanced stationary bike, with 3D scenery and interactive races. Research has shown that social presence can enhance performance (Zajonc, 1965). Research with the cybercycle found that more competitive participants increased exercise intensity with the introduction of a virtual competitor (Snyder et al., 2010). The current study extended the prior experimental design by comparing virtual with live social presence. After training to ride the cybercycle, female college students rode in the presence of a virtual rider and live rider (randomly ordered); a …
Theory Of Mind Temperament And Prosocial Behavior In Preschoolers, Shannon R. Funkhouser
Theory Of Mind Temperament And Prosocial Behavior In Preschoolers, Shannon R. Funkhouser
Honors Theses
Theory of mind is the ability to understand that others have thoughts, beliefs, or ideas that differ from one’s own. This study investigated the relationship between theory-of-mind and prosocial behavior in 42 preschoolers. Prosocial behavior is defined as voluntary actions intended to benefit another. The role of temperament was also examined in terms of the relationship between prosocial behavior and theory of mind. The researcher went to two preschools and administered a battery of seven theory-of-mind tasks individually to each child (Wellman & Lui, 2004). Parents completed a temperament questionnaire measuring emotionality, activity, sociability, and shyness. Teachers rated each child’s …
Disordered Eating As A Consequence Of Thin-Ideal Television: An Investigation Of Internalization And Self-Monitoring As Potential Vulnerability Factors, Arielle S. Gartenburg
Disordered Eating As A Consequence Of Thin-Ideal Television: An Investigation Of Internalization And Self-Monitoring As Potential Vulnerability Factors, Arielle S. Gartenburg
Honors Theses
This study investigated the association between television exposure and disordered eating, with an emphasis on the potential moderating effects of self-monitoring and thin-ideal internalization. Minimal research has explored the relationship between self-monitoring and eating disorders, and no previous studies have examined the correlation between self-monitoring and the thin-ideal. A sample of 116 female undergraduate students completed measures of self-monitoring, disordered eating, thin-ideal internalization, media exposure, and diet and exercise behaviors. It was hypothesized that high self-monitors, who are more attuned to social cues and appropriateness of behavior, would be more likely than low self-monitors to internalize the thin-ideal. Since thin-ideal …
The Role Of Personality On Persuasion To Exercise: Does Conscientiousness And Extraversion Moderate The Constructs Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior?, Amanda I. Samuels
The Role Of Personality On Persuasion To Exercise: Does Conscientiousness And Extraversion Moderate The Constructs Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior?, Amanda I. Samuels
Honors Theses
The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is a leading theoretical model used to explain the intention-behavior relationship as it relates to exercise. Even though TPB consistently explains some of the variance between intention and behavior, the rest of the variance has yet to be explained. This study investigates whether individual differences in terms of the Big Five personality dimensions, specifically, Conscientiousness and Extraversion, can account for any of the additional variance. The present research extends on past research by examining how personality relates to intention in terms of its relation to the constructs of TPB. 122 students at Union college …
Color Vision And Color Discrimination In Anolis Sagrei, Rachael A. Singleton
Color Vision And Color Discrimination In Anolis Sagrei, Rachael A. Singleton
Honors Theses
Anolis is a genus of fairly common lizards; over 300 species of Anolis inhabit areas close to the equator. One of their most unique features is the dewlap, a colorful throat fan that the lizards can extend and contract to denote certain behaviors. Dewlap color and pattern varies between species, and therefore aids in species identification. For this reason, color vision and color discrimination is especially important in Anolis lizards. Over a 10-week period a series of training experiments using color markers were done with four lizards of the Anolis sagrei species. The lizards were trained to move a color …
An Examination Of The Association Between Hiv Related Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors And Hiv Infection Status In Five High Hiv Prevalence States In India., Thein Z. Lwin
Public Health Theses
Although data shows that the incidence of HIV in India is falling, it is still a prevailing disease in India. The lack of knowledge about HIV and risky behaviors greatly influence the role of HIV transmission among the Indian population. These factors also contribute to the numbers of new HIV infections caused by unprotected sex, which account for 90% of the new HIV infections. Knowledge, attitudes and behaviors among the people living with HIV/AIDS also play an important role in HIV transmission. This study was conducted to explore the association between selected demographic variables on HIV related knowledge, attitudes and …

Ecology And Conservation Of Cougars In The Eastern Great Basin: Effects Of Urbanization, Habitat Fragmentation, And Exploitation, David C. Stoner
Ecology And Conservation Of Cougars In The Eastern Great Basin: Effects Of Urbanization, Habitat Fragmentation, And Exploitation, David C. Stoner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research was designed to investigate cougar response to urbanization, habitat fragmentation, and exploitation from behavioral, demographic, and landscape perspectives. The source-sink model has been proposed as an alternative framework for the management of exploited cougar populations. I addressed the basic question of whether cougars conform behaviorally to the predictions of the source-sink model, and consequently, the applied question of whether the model could be used for the conservation of this species. To achieve this I evaluated three scale-specific questions using radio-telemetry and hunter-harvest data collected from 1996-2010. At the subpopulation scale, I tested the hypothesis that cougars are wildland …
Social Networking And Individual Performance: Examining Predictors Of Participation, Michael Anthony Brown Sr.
Social Networking And Individual Performance: Examining Predictors Of Participation, Michael Anthony Brown Sr.
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation addresses relationships between social networking and individual performance. The "act" of social networking is a process and practice by which people and organizations are drawn together by family, work or hobby to interact via websites. The explosion of these new network connections in the workplace suggests the need for an exploration of the various ways organizations can affect and improve performance and productivity.
This dissertation suggests a social networking participation model that may help organizations predict and understand the value proposition that affects acceptance or rejection of participation. Innovation adoption, governing by network and social capital are important …

Dynamics Of An Emerging Infectious Disease Of Amphibians: From Individuals To Communities, Matthew Damien Venesky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chytridiomycosis is an infectious disease of amphibians caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), and it has played an important role in the worldwide decline of amphibians. My dissertation research examined the consequences of Bdinfections on tadpole feeding biomechanics and activity, pathogen transmission, and host immunology. The keratinized labial teeth of Bd-infected Fowler's Toad (Anaxyrus [=Bufo] fowleri) and Grey Treefrog (Hyla versicolor) tadpoles slipped off of surfaces on which they grazed and were in contact with an algal-covered surface for a shorter duration of time during each feeding cycle. During feeding trials, Bd-infected A. fowleri and H. versicolor tadpoles obtained …

Bystander Behavior: Understanding Undergraduate Male Involvement In Dangerous Drinking Situations, Christopher Allen Waugh
Dissertations
Problem drinking leaves a troubling wake on college campuses throughout the United States. This dissertation explores to what extent male college student bystanders involved in dangerous drinking situations intervene and to what extent information and training in specific bystander skills improves their likelihood to be effective, engaged bystanders. Many germane themes emerge in this study, including: a priority for undergraduate males on social activities, a lack of undergraduate male empathy for male peers, and absent sense of undergraduate male responsibility for self and others. Further, the study presents a new typology for the disengaged male, undergraduate bystander, including recommendations for …

The Relationship Of Teacher Perceptions Of Principal Support Styles And Teachers' Own Attitudes About The Use Of Support Styles With Children, Michael Simcha Lax
The Relationship Of Teacher Perceptions Of Principal Support Styles And Teachers' Own Attitudes About The Use Of Support Styles With Children, Michael Simcha Lax
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
This study assessed the role that principal modeling has on influencing teachers’ classroom styles and behaviors. Teachers differ in the degree to which they employ autonomy supporting or controlling behaviors. The degree to which teachers demonstrate autonomy supportive behaviors has a direct effect on the level of autonomous motivation demonstrated by students. This is because students are more likely to develop self-determined motivation in a social environment which provides support for autonomy (Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier and Ryan, 1991). Higher levels of student autonomy is associated with a lower school drop out rate (Vallerand, 1997) and higher levels of academic achievement …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
While many empirical works detail the experience of and effects from sexual victimization, the underlying mechanisms that promote a cycle of recurrent victimization are not well understood. The current study replicated a previous study examining the perceptions of the benefits, risks, and personal expected involvement regarding a variety of risk taking behaviors in a sample of 151 college women with and without histories of sexual abuse. The current study further introduced a behavioral task in effort to test the utility of a multi-method approach to risk assessment. T-test analyses revealed that individuals with a history of sexual abuse perceived lesser …
The Role Of Executive Functions In Facilitating Soothing Behavior During Interactions With A Simulated Distressed Infant, Katie M. Laws
The Role Of Executive Functions In Facilitating Soothing Behavior During Interactions With A Simulated Distressed Infant, Katie M. Laws
Honors Capstones
Prior work has noted the importance of parenting for supporting the development of emotion regulation in infants/children. The goal of this study was to examine the influence of adult EF on behavioral responses to infant distress. The current investigation used a novel methodological approach, the infant simulator paradigm (ISIM), to evaluate the effects of participant EF on soothing behavior during interactions with an inconsolable, simulated infant. Given the importance ofEF in regulation of behavior, it was predicted that participants with lower EF would engage in fewer soothing behaviors (i.e., sensitive vocalizations, soothing touch, distracting, and caretaking efforts) than participants with …
The Importance Of Disease And Behavior In Mammalian Ecology And Behavior, Christopher R. Collins
The Importance Of Disease And Behavior In Mammalian Ecology And Behavior, Christopher R. Collins
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Causes of mortality reflect the evolutionary forces shaping the physiology and behavior of species. To evaluate the relative importance of these in North American Mammals I compared published data from 69 populations across 27 species. Of the known causes, humans are the main cause of mortality (51.8%), followed by natural causes (48.5%), with predation being the largest natural cause. Populations in remote areas experienced higher hunting mortality, and those closer to human populations suffered increased vehicle collision. Predation mortality was negatively correlated with body mass.
