W. E. B. Du Bois‘ legendary reflections on the ―peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one‘s self through the eyes of others‖ has been applied almost exclusively to the souls of African American people (Du Bois 1903). This thesis shows how the concept of double-consciousness is alive in the stories told by Native Americans. I draw upon data from two websites that have recorded the stories told by ―exemplary indigenous elders, historians, storytellers and song carriers‖ and their oral traditions that serve the ―purpose of cultural preservation, education, and race reconciliation‖ (Wisdom of the Elders, 2009). …

The following poems are and attempt at reclamation and reconciliation. The first section wades through the delicate subject of personal history and is an attempt to show truth as a means of both self and communal healing. The second is plaintive, a brief effort to interlope into and understand worlds outside (but not foreign) to my own. The third is a poetic essay detailing the journey of a young woman facing the horrors of an undeclared, and seemingly eternal war. Race is a major axis of social injustice in America. Social injustice is due to both maldistribution of material resources and opportunities and non-recognition or mis-recognition of people of color. One form of mis-recognition is the accusation that a person of color is not a real American, creating a conflict of identities (i.e., racial and American): a double-consciousness. This accusation has its origins in faulty ideas about race, identity, and race-group membership.

A consideration of three State Songs, ΓÇ£My Old Kentucky HomeΓÇ¥ by Stephen Foster, ΓÇ£Carry Me Back to Old VirginnyΓÇ¥ by James A. Bland, and ΓÇ£The Missouri WaltzΓÇ¥ with lyrics by James Royce Shannon. The combination of black dialect and negative stereotypes, with elevation to special status impacting identity, necessitated their alteration. Such change reflects societal response to the Civil Rights Movement, while a pragmatic view suggests these malleable artifacts have functioned, and continue to function, as ΓÇ£blue notes,ΓÇ¥ unsettling elements acting to stimulate discourse, becoming participants in the formation of identity and American cultural change.
