Breaking The Ice: Prospects For Canadian-American Institutional Change In The Governance Of The Northwest Passage, Jeffrey Parkey
All Dissertations
This study assesses four institutional approaches to governing the use of the Northwest Passage, including the current rules in use. The assessment is conducted through the use of expert interviews, a review of the theoretical literature, and an examination of comparative cases. Because of significant environmental changes underway in the Arctic region, institutional change for Northwest Passage management is receiving increased attention. Due to the potential environmental and security impacts of regularized ship transits through the Northwest Passage, a number of informed observers have discussed the need for considering alternative means of governing the waterway. The advantages and disadvantages of …
Cultivating Our Mosaic : Understanding The Language Choices Of Canadian Immigrant Students., Julia E. Kiernan
Cultivating Our Mosaic : Understanding The Language Choices Of Canadian Immigrant Students., Julia E. Kiernan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the competing views of multilingualism that shape U.S. and Canadian post-secondary literacy education. Drawing on education, English studies, globalization theory, applied linguistics, translation studies, multiculturalism, and second-language studies, this project engages in a study of multilingual students from writing courses at a Canadian university. The analysis focuses on the relationships between Canadian multilingualism and current U.S. scholarship surrounding English monolingualism in terms of eradicationism, language segregation, and language interaction. The findings challenge previous research and popular opinion, as well as Canadian government policy, all of which tend to designate Canadian classrooms and society as definitively accepting of …

Does Mean Osteon Size Change With Age, Sex Or Handedness? Analysis Of The Second Metacarpal In A 19th Century Sample From Belleville, Ontario, Canada, Bridget Jennifer Denny
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Histological analysis of cortical bone can be used to provide information on age at death, health status, and the influence of biomechanical forces on bones. Specifically, a better understanding of the variation in mean osteon size can increase our knowledge about the influence of factors such as age and sex associated changes and their effects on bone metabolic functions. Previous studies suggest that these influences are bone specific and have produced varying results regarding the association between osteon size and the variables mentioned above. To date, no research has focused on mean osteon size in metacarpals. The purpose of this …
Injury Prevention Organizations In Canada: High Impact, Highly Creative?, Pamela Fuselli
Injury Prevention Organizations In Canada: High Impact, Highly Creative?, Pamela Fuselli
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Public sector organizations, specifically those dealing with knowledge as their product, are assumed to function on different principles than organizations in the private sector. Non-profit organizations do not represent a sector that has been studied in terms of creativity, creative problem-solving or thinking skills, although they have been the subject of study in terms of societal impact and value, specifically in the United States. There is an important gap that could be filled through exploration of non-profit organizations in Canada in terms of what has been shown to be high impact as well as high creativity. This project looks at …

Assessing The Sensitivity Of The Canadian Adverse Event Following Immunization Surveillance System ( Caefiss), Mina Tadrous
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Background: Vaccines are important to public health, but because of the way they are manufactured, their mechanism of action, and their indicated population, careful monitoring of their adverse events is necessary. Canada has a national surveillance system that collects reports on adverse events that may be associated with vaccine administration. Sensitivity is one of the tools used with surveillance systems to study the extent and characteristics of reporting of a surveillance system. To date, the sensitivity of the Canadian system has not been assessed.
Purpose: To assess the sensitivity of the Canadian Adverse Event Following Immunization Surveillance System …
Indigenous Leadership: A Talking-Circle Dialogue With Cree Leaders, Julia L. Buchanan Phd
Indigenous Leadership: A Talking-Circle Dialogue With Cree Leaders, Julia L. Buchanan Phd
Dissertations
The study of leadership is gaining popularity as evidenced by the increasing number of leadership development programs in both corporate and academic environments. Therefore, the way that leadership is defined becomes important. Unfortunately, the majority of literature on leadership emphasizes a Eurocentric or Western perspective. This study explored the leadership-related thinking and practices embraced by a First Nations population in Canada: nehiyawak or the Cree people. As the research evolved, the study also ended up exploring both cultural differences with respect to knowledge and knowing and the ethical issues involved with permitting non-native researchers to study native groups. The latter …

Taming The Wild: On Womanhood, Nation And Nature In Ann-Marie Macdonald's Fall On Your Knees And The Way The Crow Flies, Yvonne Michelle Hammond
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This project evaluates the work of Canadian author and playwright Ann-Marie Macdonald in the context of links between ecocritical, feminist and post-colonial perspectives; it seeks to understand how broader definitions for gender provide an alternative to the patriarchal binaries that limit both individual and national identities. Part of the Canadian conscious is an anxiety that questions not only the way difference impacts their culture, but also how these differences speak to a lack of a homogenized national identity. This study focuses on Macdonalds novels Fall on Your Knees (1996) and The Way the Crow Flies (2003) , in order to …
Violence Against Indigenous Women: Literature, Activism, Resistance, Allison Hargreaves
Violence Against Indigenous Women: Literature, Activism, Resistance, Allison Hargreaves
Digitized Theses
This dissertation investigates literary, activist, and policy-related interventions into the social issue of violence against Indigenous women in Canada, examining key points of intersection between contemporary Indigenous resistance writing and antiviolence activist discourse. Although Indigenous resistance literature has received some critical attention in Canada, its specific relation to activist discourse remains relatively unexplored. My dissertation makes a case for reading literary texts and activist discourse in dialogue with one another, engaging a comparative frame through which to understand cultural production as an activist pursuit, while then using this frame as a reflexive means of querying the possibilities and limits of …

Science Advice In Environmental Policymaking: An Examination Of Institutional Barriers In The Canadian Federal Government, Christopher J. Popovich
Science Advice In Environmental Policymaking: An Examination Of Institutional Barriers In The Canadian Federal Government, Christopher J. Popovich
Digitized Theses
Evident in many Canadian federal government and international publications is the recognition of the underlying importance that scientific knowledge has in evidence-based policymaking. Despite this recognition, academic and empirical research suggests that there are a number of barriers preventing the utilization of science in policy. This thesis examines such barriers in the context of environmental policymaking in the Canadian federal government. It uses a collection of multidisciplinary literature, Canadian federal government documents and interviews with officials from the Canadian federal departments of Natural Resources Canada, Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Health Canada, to then make generalizations about the …
“From Canada. For The World”: National Myth And The Canadian Museum For Human Rights, Brendan Mcgeagh
“From Canada. For The World”: National Myth And The Canadian Museum For Human Rights, Brendan Mcgeagh
Digitized Theses
On April 20, 2007, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced plans for a new national institution, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR). This announcement was swiftly followed by amendments to the Museums Act, and a unanimous Parliamentary endorsement of the museum. It is from here that the questions of my thesis arise: What notion of “human rights” is being evoked and promoted by the CMHR? How does this national human rights museum both lean upon and support national identity? And, how does the museum’s version of human rights generate definitions of citizenship and responsibility? Much human rights activism is at …
