Stability Of Articulated Revetments Against Wave Attack On Shallow Soft Soil Slopes, Edmond Joseph Russo Jan 2009

Stability Of Articulated Revetments Against Wave Attack On Shallow Soft Soil Slopes, Edmond Joseph Russo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Continuously-connected, articulated revetment systems have potential to decrease the weight of armor cover in resisting wave attack, compared to traditional designs. Modes of instability for sloping revetments include uplift, sliding, and toe roll-up. Design methods are summarized by McDonnell (1998), Pilarczyk (1998), and Herbich (1999). Russo (2003) conducted a field prototype scale investigation on performance of Articulated Concrete Mattresses (ACMs) in coastal Louisiana, which demonstrated this structure’s ability to resist a range of wave loading conditions, and inspired scoping of further research to quantify structure performance beyond known limits. Present research expanded earlier works by examining fundamental physical processes of …

A Discrete Model Of Guided Modes And Anomalous Scattering In Periodic Structures, Natalia Grigoryevna Ptitsyna Jan 2009

A Discrete Model Of Guided Modes And Anomalous Scattering In Periodic Structures, Natalia Grigoryevna Ptitsyna

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We study a discrete prototype of anomalous scattering associated with the interaction of guided modes of a periodic scatterer and plane waves incident upon the scatterer. The transmission anomalies arise because of the non-robustness of a guided mode, a mode that exists only at a specific frequency and wave number pair. The simplicity of the discrete prototype allows one to make certain explicit calculations and proofs, and to examine details of important resonant phenomena of the open wave guides. The main results are (1) a formula for transmission anomalies near a non-robust guided mode with rigorous error estimates that extends …

Inorganic Chemical Oxygen Demand Of Re-Suspended Sediments In A Bar-Built Lagoon, Keenan A. Smith Jan 2009

Inorganic Chemical Oxygen Demand Of Re-Suspended Sediments In A Bar-Built Lagoon, Keenan A. Smith

Master's Theses

Rapid dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion, caused by inorganic chemical oxygen demand (COD) of re-suspended sediment compounds, has been documented in few studies, yet fish kills occur often from the process. Pescadero Lagoon, California, USA, a bar-built lagoon that suffers annual fish kills caused by rapid mixing-induced hypoxia upon sandbar breach, was studied to investigate the potential for COD of re-suspended sediment to deplete oxygen. In-situ chamber mixing trials demonstrated that re-suspended sediment can exert powerful oxygen demand on receiving waters. Surface DO depletion upon bar breach was too severe to be explained solely by mixing of the anoxic hypolimnion into …

Music In The Lives Of Two Children With Autism : A Case Study, Elizabeth Ron Fang Jan 2009

Music In The Lives Of Two Children With Autism : A Case Study, Elizabeth Ron Fang

Master's Theses

This thesis is a qualitative case study about two children with autism spectrum disorder and the role of music in their lives. It explores how music serves as a non-threatening medium for learning and developing skills necessary to function successfully in life. The stories of the children and their parents are shared through their personal account and the author's observations. The literature in the field reveals that a structured/functional use of music helps communication, social interaction, appropriate behavior, motor skills, and academics in children with autism. Each child is able to actively participate in music-making within varied and appropriate settings …

The Role Of Ozone Forcing On Climate Models, Sium Tesfai Gebremariam Jan 2009

The Role Of Ozone Forcing On Climate Models, Sium Tesfai Gebremariam

Master's Theses

Thirteen coupled Atmospheric Oceanic Global Circulation Models (AOGCMs) and seven Chemistry Climate Models (CCMs) are compared to radiosonde and satellite observations to assess model performance and to study the connection between ozone forcing and model temperature trends during the last two decades. Overall, CCMs and AOGCMs that include time-varying ozone forcing agree reasonably well with observations in the lower stratosphere for both annual and seasonal averages, but models without time-varying ozone forcing (fixed) are statistically different from observations between ~ 150 hPa and 10 hPa. Both CCMs and those AOGCMs with time-varying ozone forcing capture the seasonality of the observed …

P.I.: Poetry And The Imagination, Higino Francisco V. Penones Jr. Jan 2009

P.I.: Poetry And The Imagination, Higino Francisco V. Penones Jr.

Master's Theses

The idea of a nation, a political concept spread during the Enlightenment with the invention of printing technology, has long been expressed through various representations. As a concept showing racial commonality and filiation, the notion of nation has been represented in various media, like printing and painting. Long before my country, the Philippines, became a sovereign state, it had been imagined and represented in various ways by early sea explorers, adventurers, writers, artists, cartographers, anthropologists, and its subsequent colonizers.

These representations, consistent with Benedict Anderson's definition of nation as an "imagined community," underlies this creative thesis project. My poems attempt …

Frederick Beecher Perkins: Library Pioneer And Curmudgeon., Michael D. Murray Jan 2009

Frederick Beecher Perkins: Library Pioneer And Curmudgeon., Michael D. Murray

Master's Theses

In the following thesis, I will argue that Frederick Beecher Perkins is an overlooked figure in library history who deserves to be listed among the great library pioneers. Perkins was involved with many of the people, organizations, and major debates that shaped the field of librarianship in the late 1800s. He was associated with such figures as Melvil Dewey and Justin Winsor. He was involved in the critical issues of the day such as best reading, cataloging and classifying books, and administering libraries. He also played a role in important organizations and libraries such as the American Library Association, the …

Relations Between Language And Executive Function In Spanish-Speaking Children., Ana Luz Portillo Jan 2009

Relations Between Language And Executive Function In Spanish-Speaking Children., Ana Luz Portillo

Master's Theses

The literature on the development of executive function (EF) has been largely limited to studies of middle-class English-speaking children. This study extended executive function research to a primarily low socioeconomic status (SES) sample of Spanish-speaking preschool children living in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine a variety of language measures (vocabulary, grammar, and comprehensive language) in relation to a variety of executive function measures (working memory, inhibitory control, and attention-shifting). Results revealed that Spanish speakers performed on some, but not all, EF measures comparably to higher SES English-speaking peers, in concurrence with previously reported findings. …

Concerto For The Young Adventurer., Mark Forrest Desimone Jan 2009

Concerto For The Young Adventurer., Mark Forrest Desimone

Master's Theses

Concerto for the Young Adventurer is a four-movement work written for cello, vibraphone and piano. Its themes are youthful adventure and exploration. Although the work is not programmatic in the strict sense, each movement is titled to guide the listener through a possible interpretation of the music's meaning. Each instrument is featured in several places, and all three provide supporting material when not in the spotlight. As a whole, the work is symphonic in its structure. Each movement serves its purpose in the larger picture, while all can function independently from one another. Recurring ideas link the movements together thematically …

California Librarians And The Vietnam War, 1967--1972., Daryn Eller Jan 2009

California Librarians And The Vietnam War, 1967--1972., Daryn Eller

Master's Theses

Just like other segments of society, librarianship was affected by the Vietnam War and the parallel antiwar movement, though in varying degrees. The war precipitated a debate among librarians about whether, in a profession that prides itself on neutrality, it is appropriate to speak out on political matters. In California, a state that was both heavily dependent on military spending and the home of a strong antiwar movement, some individual librarians did take a stand against the war, as did the California Library Association. Primarily, though, librarians concentrated on providing information to citizens to help them make informed decisions, coming …

Kernel Regression Subject To Interval-Censored Responses And Qualitative Constraints, Xiuli Kang Jan 2009

Kernel Regression Subject To Interval-Censored Responses And Qualitative Constraints, Xiuli Kang

Digitized Theses

This thesis is concerned with problems arising when one wants to apply flexible non- parametric local regression models to data when there is additional qualitative in formation. It is also concerned with nonparametric regression problems involving interval-censored responses. These problems are studied via asymptotic theory where possible and by simulation.

Iterated conditional expectation methods and local likelihood estimation for nonparametric interval-censored regression are developed. Simulation results show that local likelihood estimation is often superior to local regression estimators when observations have been imputed using either interval midpoints or iterated conditional expectations when the censoring intervals are wide or of varying …

Interactions Between Supersonic Gas Jets And Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds, Nestor Cruz Jan 2009

Interactions Between Supersonic Gas Jets And Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds, Nestor Cruz

Digitized Theses

This thesis presents research on the use of attrition nozzles in gas-solid fluidized beds for two applications: green sand reclamation and particle size control in fluid cokers. These two applications make use of the same attrition principles, and the main difference between them is that for green sand reclamation fragmentation is not desired, since its goal is just to remove an outer layer of the green sand particles. The green sand reclamation method proposed in this research is a new, innovative process while jet attrition is already used in fluid cokers. In addition to fluid cokers, other applications of

jet …

At The Scene, On The Screen, And Beyond: Experiences And Representations Of Coney Island In Early Twentieth Century Photography And Film, Sonja-Lee T. Peters Jan 2009

At The Scene, On The Screen, And Beyond: Experiences And Representations Of Coney Island In Early Twentieth Century Photography And Film, Sonja-Lee T. Peters

Digitized Theses

This thesis will examine representations of Coney Island in photography and short films from the turn o f the twentieth century and in narrative films from the 1920s. I will consider how Coney Island was represented and examine the polysémie functions ofthe. representations. The photographs and films that I have selected as case studies in this investigation are those I believe best illustrate the capacity of these media to show and recreate Coney Island experiences. Representing Coney Island saved economic, national, individual, social, cultural, and artistic ends. Situating this selection o f representations in the contexts that they were produced …

Eat Your Words: The Incorporation Of Language And Body, Laura Krahn Jan 2009

Eat Your Words: The Incorporation Of Language And Body, Laura Krahn

Digitized Theses

This project explores the relationship between bodies and language through Hélène Cixous’ notion of writing the body. Metaphor becomes a site where bodies and language speak to each other. Therefore, the metaphors of Cixous’ own theoretical writing become sites of inquiry. Cixous’ theory of écriture féminine coalescences around the metaphor of white ink and textual maternity. This theory also emphasises the importance of history and desire in empowering feminine subjects. Legitimatization of such subjects takes place through writing originating with embodied experience, a morphology rather than an economy. However, such experiences are also in turn written onto the body by …

Characteristics And Impact On Rework Of Information Lost Due To Lack Of Documentation During Requirements Engineering And Software Architecting, Muhammad Iftekher Chowdhury Jan 2009

Characteristics And Impact On Rework Of Information Lost Due To Lack Of Documentation During Requirements Engineering And Software Architecting, Muhammad Iftekher Chowdhury

Digitized Theses

Requirements engineering (RE) and software architecting (SA) are two front end activities in the software development lifecycle which have great impact on the overall success of a software project. Because of the highly communication intensive nature of these activities, different types of communication channel from face to face discussions to email, chat, video conferencing etc., are used for these activities. All types of information discussed during these activities are not possible to document. Information lost during this time might cause problems in later stages. We conducted an industrial survey on 32 software professionals from a total of 23 different companies …

Cognitive Representations Of Depression: Self-Other Differences And Effects Of Symptom Severity, Melissa Mohan Jan 2009

Cognitive Representations Of Depression: Self-Other Differences And Effects Of Symptom Severity, Melissa Mohan

Digitized Theses

Using Leventhal’s Self-Regulation Model, this thesis investigated the impact of target person (self, other), and symptom severity (mild, moderate) on cognitive representations of depression. Participants rated several different vignettes that systematically varied the target person and symptom severity. As expected, moderate symptoms were viewed as more serious and debilitating, particularly after progressing from mild symptoms. A predicted self-positivity bias was also obtained, with many of the cognitive representations associated with depression being less extreme for the self, when compared to an other. In particular, participants ascribed a shorter timeline, more situational than dispositional causes, more self-help than professional help, less …

Assessing The Effect Of Treatment On Solitary Dormant Metastatic Cells By Mri And Optical Imaging, Jason L. Townson Jan 2009

Assessing The Effect Of Treatment On Solitary Dormant Metastatic Cells By Mri And Optical Imaging, Jason L. Townson

Digitized Theses

Metastatic disease is responsible for the majority of cancer related deaths. However, most anti-cancer drugs are not designed or tested for efficacy against this heterogeneous cancer cell population. This is in part due to the technical challenges involved in imaging and quantifying individual cells, or even large metastases, in common non-superficial sites of metastasis including lung, brain, bone marrow and liver. The purpose of the studies presented here was to develop and utilize imaging techniques capable of assessing metastatic cell progression and quantifying the effect of treatment on the majority of metastatic

cell population, inclusive of solitary cells. Quantification of …

Behaviour Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Retrofitted/Repaired In Shear With Fibre Reinforced Polymers, Hasan Nikopour Deilami Jan 2009

Behaviour Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Retrofitted/Repaired In Shear With Fibre Reinforced Polymers, Hasan Nikopour Deilami

Digitized Theses

This study aims to explore the shear behaviour of externally Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bonded reinforced concrete beams under quasi-static or monotonic loading. The effects of key parameters such as the shear span to effective depth ratio, FRP type and scheme, and stiffness of FRP sheets on shear behaviour aspects such as the ultimate load capacity, deflection, crack pattern, mode of failure, and final strain in the FRP sheets were investigated. This study consists of two main phases incorporating experimental and numerical parts. In the experimental part, six beams were tested using different types of FRP sheets under quasi-static cyclic load …
